Hackle is used for every species I can think of on both jigs and flies. I have jigs for crappie, bluegil, trout, perch, salmon, steelhead and salt water that have lots of hackle on them in many different ways.Tails, heads, palmered and whatever other way I can think to use it.
i use hackle now for 100 percent of my jigs...only time i use marabou is when a customer asks for it
ok maybe i am confused (new guy) is hackle a type of material or is it the style of tying with wrapping the feather around so it sticks out of the chenille? i watched the you tube video on the post first time with hackle.
Hackle is just a feather that has a lot of uses. Wrap it to give the fly a hairy look. Use it for tails to make the tail look wider. Use it to make fins and backs. Wrap it around the top to give an emerger look to a fly. Too many things to really list them all.
ok thanks, i thought it was the look of all that sticking out on the "neck" of the jig, thanks for clearing that for me
About any feathers on a birds body is some sort of hackle.
I use hackle for tail, palmered hackle and hackle collars. If there is a use for it I will on both flies and jigs.

yes that is what it is called, i just watched a video on that. thank you very much. no do you do palmering for crappie jigs? or is it just for flies?
Both and I make them all the time. Have one customer that has me make jigs with no tail and all one color, first ones were black head and body with black palmered hackle. Now I have to do his pink and then Chartreuse. He says he just hammers the giant crappie in Miss like this.
Here is one of his...

do you put chenille in there also? sorry if these sound like stupid questions
Yes on these I used Nylon Chenille, but you can use Rayon as well, but I just like Nylon best, but not all colors come in Nylon.
You tie in the tail in one is going to be there and then tie in the hackle at the back end if your doing that way and then the chenille. Then wrap and tie off the hackle. Look at FAOL like I already said and all your questions will be answered. If you had gone on that link I know you wouldn't still be asking these questions. This is very well laid out and actually where I learned almost all I know. Never been to any other class.

It is a must of you want to tie properly and well tied flies or jigs IMHO!
Sorry I thought this one had the link, but it didn't. I know that I have posted it in the last few days plus it's in the sticky for Beginners. I don't know of a better place to see the pictures and descriptions of each step of tying a bunch of different styles. It is a must link to look through the beginner stage and it will show you every way to use the hackle. After your better, go to the Intermediate stuff and then later advanced.
we use a lot of Hackle we just bought a couple of pounds for making jigs we use it for many other uses and fly tying
These guys are the experts on tying, but you can band up a cotton ball on a lead head and catch sacalait...I would know, ha. Just don't expect it to last long. A lot of it is for the fisherman and not the fish, but it sure looks good and looks like fun to play with when you can't be on the water.
