If in doubt always go to the next biggest size. We considered trying to get by with a smaller RAM mount but went ahead and got a bigger one. Very glad we did.
This one. Some of the guys are confusing the ball size with the mounting base size. What you want is the D sized ball which is actually 3.68" and has a 2.5" round base.
When you hear "the big one", this is what they're talking about.

I know everyone says the big one but I have the next size down and my 998 is solid as a rock. It seems to me that if you're impacting waves hard enough to move the 1.5" ram then I'd be glad it did move to help prevent any damage to the unit.
I've got an hds7 on the smaller ram mount, and the hds8 on the larger one. When I get to the water, I usually have to loosen the smaller one and reposition it, cause it will always give over from the drive, but my big unit is up front and it sets there just as I left it on the D ram mount. I just dont think I would like the hds8 on the smaller mount at all. It has vibration absorpsion as it should and will do what you want for you. I bought expensive fishing electronics, and supplies and a cheap boat. To everyone his own. Good luck with whatever you choose. :)
