Not really. Don't tell Birdy, but all those catfish were released (about 85 pounds). I do a lot of CPR (catch, picture, release). I have been releasing a lot of crappie also. Due to the heat, I have been catfishing instead of crappie fishin'.
I harvest a lot of hunting game in the winter. Some game gets shot with a camcorder instead of a gun.

I'm with ya Red on CPR. I do it all the time unless I have someone with me that wants the fish. I do keep some from time to time just to have a small fish fry. But I love to just catch fish and release them so I can catch them again and again.

If I didn't practice some catch and release on the lake I fish the most, I believe I could fish it out for the most part. Some fish are easy targets. I often target harder to catch species just for the challenge.
Red you have some nice catches, which you prove with your videos. But I highly doubt you can fish the lake out.
Don't underestimate my skills as a cat man. Yes, there would alway be fiddlers but the bigger cats can be very vulnerable at times.

Redtick, I have to take you at your word. I have to assume you are catching them legally on rod and reel, however since you are not showing videos of the actual catch or the actual release I have to have the question in my mind is he not just BSing us all. I consider my self an expert bank pole and trot line cat fisherman. I spent years learning from some experts on how to do both. I haven't done either one in over 20 years. I learned how to do just as good with a rod and reel. Bank poles and trot lines are dangerous and require hard work. They have to be tended daily. Rod and reels are more laid back. I never jugged and don't have a good outlook on that type of cat fishing. All of the catfish in my videos were caught on a rod and reel and in a lake with a 2 pole limit and where nothing else is allowed. I did not break any laws.
Birdy, they have high dollar catfish tournaments just like bass and crappie tournaments. I compete with my hunting dogs, I fish for personal enjoyment. I intend to keep it that way.
I believe I could clean out a small lake like the one I fish. I could not make a dent in a large lake like Shelbyville. I used to trot line Shelbyville and bank pole the Kaskaskia coming into it. I had catches that would make the catches in my videos look poor. Sometimes, we would have 200 pound stringers,with some 50-70 pound flatheads. I know how to catch big flatties at Shelbyville but go back to my first paragraph.
I really don't care if anyone believes me or not. I sure don't believe everything I read or see on this board. In fact, I learned a long time ago to not believe anything you are told and half of what you see when it come to fishermen (and hunters).
I could post some how to videos but there are not enough catch and release guys on this board and I don't want to help the resources to be exploited by greedy folks.

I love catfishing in the summertime, but usually go after flatheads. This year the sangamon has finally been low enough for me to fish my favorite spot without using a couple pounds of weight. Just throw on a shad, bluegill, shiner, bullhead, carp, drum, or anything else you can get your hands on by your favorite deep log jam and see what happens!
I have caught more flatties on trot lines and bank poles than rod and reels. Flatties can be fickle sometimes. They can watch your bait for an hour before hitting it. And, they bite different than most cats. You often have to wait and not try to set the hook the first bite. I think they kill the bait before they eat it. If you try to set the hook while they are killing the bait, you won't get the flattie.
The lake I fish most often doesn't have a lot of flatties or the structure to hold them, so I don't fish for them. I did catch a 14 pound flattie on my crappie pole last year and every year someone catches a big one fishin' for other fish.
I love catchin' big flatties. Maybe next year I will fish Shelbyville and target them. I used to catch them at fish hook.
