Well I am happy with this one and what a beautiful Light Olive this is. So what do you guys think?
It's hard to see in this picture, but the body is segmented and you can see and feel that.

And just to show you guys we all can do poor work if we try hard enough, LOL!
Here is the one that had me peeved the other day. Notice the bubble butt? Also how sorry my hackle job turned out. Now this is rope dubbed so I am still learning and this was not how the hackle should look.

Then one that came out alright even if I would fish it because I don't like the color combo, but I didn't care about that and only wanted it to dub right and it did just OK, but I was happier with the results and now am back.

looks nice
I like the first one....:-)
I hate dubbing, any form of it. Only thing I hav e ever dubbed that turned out right was peacock herl. That first one looks great, the dubbing doesn't look bad on the other 2 but that is the rust coming off. When I dub it comes out looking like something that fish owuld eat as a sympathy kill. They catch fish but I wouldn't post a picture of my dubbing anything.
I like it! Ice dub? I've been trying to think of ways to get a chunky-looking dubbed body. Do you have any ideas? I have tried doing a chenille underbody and then wrapping over with dubbing with iffy results, but kept thinking that there has to be a better way of building an underbody and then dubbing it.
Is there a good way to spin dubbing in with your chenille, like the ice dub chenille?
SORRY for the off-track post! You've got the wheels spinning in my head again, Skip.
Zac
It's Mater Bright dub Zac. Let me toss this in my mind a bit and I may have some ideas already.
Anyone looking at that 2nd stuff it's just to show we can all make cruddy stuff, LOL!
The first one is the only one I like and pass my judgment.
fish_4_all I have some things for you too, but wife is calling now so back later.
Thanks guys,

Never tried dubbing because it looks like it is not very easy to do.
I havn't dubbed in years. With the different sizes and colors of chenille out now you can get the same or better results without dubbing. Some of my ugliest jigs in my early tying days caught a bunch of fish so how pretty a jig looks doesn't matter to the fishy's. They have to eat something.
They do here,lol.
Your right for the most part, but I probably have as much chenille as anyone with over 65 colors from just Danville, then cactus and Ice and Krystal and buggy yarn and a few others. However none will do everything dubbing can.
I don't think you have to have it or anything like that, but just as some enjoy catching fish on jigs they tied I enjoy catching fish on a jig that the body I made. There are probably more options available that are different then any chenille.
One thing I am trying to learn and almost there is including palmered hackle from inside the dubbed body so the stem is not even exposed to a fish tooth say. I can't believe the doors opened by that DVD I bought.

For jig tying, you don't really need to dub to get the look for most sizes. But trying to get a fuzzy looking bug on a size 24 hook is almost impossible with chenile, for me it is anyway. Not to mention smaller hooks. I will have to tie some dubbed jigs on my tiny ones and see how they come out. I only do the wax and spin method but as Skip said, the fish don't care how aweful it looks or if I could sell it to fly fisherman.

My head.
Zac I think that can be done a lot easier using the Rope Dub technique over the older ways to dub. With the Rope Dub ways you can just about do anything. I see you on FAOL and DonO has that DVD and I know it's cost, but it has re-energized me and my dubbing work and opened a lot of doors for me. I am actually excited about dubbing again.
It is so different from the stand point of doing things easier and even more ways to use it. I have not actually tried much yet and I am about to watch this DVD again. This will be probably my 4th time and I can see me watching this DVD many times to come. I am also now going to buy his next DVD with will take this more advanced. Can't wait.
Now also realize my dubbing on this jig used no tools other than the vise to hold the hook and thread (I used silk on this one just because I wanted to) and no wax, no nothing. You can add in wire, or hackle or most anything I guess.

They look good!!!!! And yeah we all get uglies from time to time LOL
fatman
Ya know I think you could use Ultra Chenille to make the body and have already tied in what ever you needed to leave a the back and tie off the Ultra chenille and then make the dubbing so it completely covers the chenille. Ultra chenille may just be dense enough to be able to do this??
I may give it a try as I have some white Ultra Chenille I can use.

One area I like to dub is when I want a different color in the middle of the bug. Start with one color of dubbing, then switch to a second color and back to the first color to finish the head. Works great for small hooks.
Skip, I guess I'll have to check that dvd out one of these days. It sounds kinda interesting! I've given thought to buying a Mark Pettijean "Magic Tool" too... I think you could make some neat jigs with that as well.
I have a few ideas as to how the chenille with a dubbing look could work as well... I just need to try it out!
kid yeah I have looked hard at that tool many times and just talked my self out of it each time. I have a couple of their things and made really different, but high quality.
