I bought my 788ci in May of this year and was wondering what software version came with my unit also. Did they ever fix the gps update feature on the birds? ( being so slow)
With the latest update and the receiver plugged directly into the unit you 4X a second refresh rate.
Might want to get CanePoles input on this. If anyone wants the GPS to work, and understands it, it would be CP.
What do u say bout it Canepole ?
I am not familiar with this unit, therefore I can not give an objective point of view. I have no complaints about the Humminbirds in general except the GPS.

Thanks for the input guys. Have they done anything bout the gps deal ? I have noticed that it has been an ongoing issue for some time now. I really havent paid much attention to the slow gps response, untill I started doing a little research on some of your older post ( by the way, u guys have some very informative post. keep up the good work) I just thought and took for granted that the slow gps response was just the way it was with all gps units.
Too bad he is not joking... The refresh still sucks at slow speeds... I just got a 997 and I really like it compared to my 797, but it just really get's under my skin that I have to use my Garmin for GPS at slow speeds or fast and running a creek channel. Even after the update.
How is your GPS Receiver connected to your 997 unit slimeyslab?
To get the faster update rate it must be connected directly to the unit either at the GPS connector or on an AS-YC y-cable.
Just to be clear on this: by the end of last the 2009 calendar year we had released software for the units that allowed for a faster GPS update rate (but only if the GPS is directly connected to the unit). This did not change how the unit determines whether it is moving or the direction that it is moving – it only allowed this information to be charted more often. I believe that these are only issues when moving very slowly and has nothing to do with how fast the unit updates its charts. The original complaint was for a slow response to direction change which has been taken care of. Determining movement and direction of travel at very slow speeds is something that is still being looked into.
