What do you guys that fish for Blue Gills a lot think? Wish that I had a smaller head already painted and a regular bend hook would have been nice too. Anyway what do you think? Will the gills get after this or no? Oh and it is a 1/32 #8, but probably would have made it 1/64 if I had one already painted.
This is really dry fly Hackle in the color Gold Badger and a base of Black Floss with gold strip wrapped over the floss.

yeah skip the kills would love that here in a 64 oz or even 80oz
Wish I'd had that this mornin. Fished a friends pond that has chunky gill's that would have liked that. They're big enough I caught em on a #7 Rapala.
i was thinking 1/80 oz size 10 would be a real good size....looks like a killer to me.

are you sure that you're not making jigs for trout skip that is definitely a killer and I'm sure the bluegills are going to love it.
LOL, I can make trout jigs too, just don't get many call from guys that fish trout. I do have at least one guy that fishing trout.Quote:

Nice jig, just hope you can sell enough to cover the necks you'll use to tie them. They seem to cost a fortune!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 months ago I bought a ginger saddle hackle from Whiting and it ran me $45 bucks, hope it lasts a while.

LOL, that is the question for sure. I am thinking of a partial solution, but I am not going to use my $72 cape that is coming or the $150 full skin of a Medium Barred Ginger Rooster.Quote:

Jig looks like a good one for gills.
You're gonna love tying with his feathers. How'd you like the looks of the full Cree skins??? I've been hinting to my wife I'd like one but I still need to get my reel for the Ugly stick first LOL

Nice jig Skip, The gills will be all over that one. A 1/80 w #8 or #10 bronze hook would be a good size for that one. Illinoisgiller
Yeah I have seen them, but he doesn't have a lot left right now and no Cree. I am going get a few more I think. He lost his main bird for the Badger stuff too so maybe next year before that can be had.Quote:

That jig as is will catch gills, but I think a step down would do even better! Good work, Skip.
Thanks and I would have preferred the jig head to have a regular bend #8 and maybe a 1/64 which would have been better. I think that is the step down you mean. I just had that head sitting in front of me painted so just took it to try this. I have 1/80 Oz., but not sure it has a need to go that light.Quote:

I actually prefer a little bigger gill baits because the quality of fish caught is usually better. That size as is looks about perfect for my taste. Very nice!!
I sure don't mind a little heavier weight. As a kid I use to buy the dry flies that come in a bunch in a bottle or something like that and I would put a split shot above that and the gills can't leave it alone.Quote:

Skip, that's a lot of money spent on those high dollar necks. Personally,I won't spend over $40,but have a lot tied up in them. I use them whenever they are needed. If something happened to me my wife would probably sell off a drawer full for $5 and the thought of that scares me. Same with my high dollar Loomis and Stella reels. Let's see what you can do with the high dollar necks,if you buy them,use them. I'd like to see some buggers with high grade hackle to see how they turn out.
Most of my high dollar hackle is more for me and not what I will have on my web site to sell. I have plenty of lower cost stuff for that like the 2 whiting badger capes I have which cost a lot less than the new stuff. I think I paid $27 for each of them and included a Hen Saddle for free. I am well aware that unless I tie some really small jigs or flies then this fancy stuff is just for me to have fun with.Quote:

I started tying to have something to do which turned into a great hobby, but that is it, all I want from it. I used almost every dollar that came in from jig sales right back into materials with a part going to some things I bought because I just wanted them and didn't need them. I bet in 4 1/2 years I have not spent $1000 out of this hobby for other than materials. Even my fishing equipment have been bought from other money sources.
So thanks, but I do know that tying with high end feathers is not something that is going to make money. Actually I may tend more to small flies for this material, but will also make my self some really cool small jigs for crappie and blue gills. Also if anything happens to me I have most of that kind of stuff marked as to the cost and told the wife throw it away before selling it cheap. That is what I prefer and once gone I don't care what she does with it. heck take it to the burn pile if she wants, but just don't give it away. Lots of guys would buy much of the better stuff I have and I know that kind of buyer is probably not coming from Crappie.com.

I just wanted you to tie some jigs or flies for yourself with the high end stuff and show us how they turn out. You can also put me in your will in case you go before me.Just say Jungle gets the necks. I'll put them necks to use. LOL They are nice to just look at,I can appreciate the beauty and quality of a quality neck,usually pics don't do them justice. Once I'm gone there's not much I can do about what my wife does with my stuff,but I'd probably still care.I'll haunt her if she does something stupid with them.
Well what I have done is marked all my saddles and capes with what I paid and if wholesale I also put what they retail for just so she would know what they are worth. Form there I wouldn't be able to help much, LOL!Quote:

Skip, most of the gills We catch are on 1/20 OZ or 1/24 OZ with #6 sickle. It seems to keep the bait stealing dinks away.Quote:

Looks good, but yeah go lighter and use a plain hook. I tried a few of those sickle hooks for gills and seemed to miss more bites. Or maybe it was just me, lol. Anywho it still looks good.

So I agree with you on hook size, but I don't think I would use a smaller hook that a regular bend #8 and lean to the #6 or #8 Sickle. Don't want them swallowing it if I can help it.
