Any of you guys know how to make patterns on your lures with Powder Paint?I've been trying and can't get it right.On this one I painted it green chartruse,cured for about 5 mins.Let it cool off,then cut into it with a broadhead in lines then dipped it cold into regular yellow chartruse and wiped off with a paper towell to fill in the scratches.Would like some good lines in it.Let's figure this thing out.
the is definitely cool looking can you do that on a regular jig head.we have worked a lot with power paint i have not come anything close to what you done we do a lot of messing around with it as we kind of backed off for a while since we've been messing with plastics.
I imagine that you could.But with being so small would be a real pain,lol.I'm trying to figure out a way to make stripes and stuff that are thick and look good.
Dip your base color, cure it completely. Dip the jig in the next color cold. Then wipe off the sections you don't want to have color. Another way is to use high temp tape that is specially designed for powder paint. Roseys powder coating sells it. I imagine you could do just about anything with the hight temp tape as long as you can cut it to the shape you want and then cover the cured places to put the next color on.
I have used blue masking tape with limited success in keeping the paint off certain sections while hot dipping. It didn't do very well but it did work a little if I didn't melt or burn it off from getting it too hot.
Another way I just thinked up would be to use a string, cotton I think, dip it in the paint and lay it across the jig using it like a plumbers line. Lay it, stretch it and snap it then wipe of the excess before curing or do this multiple times for a blended type look. I imagine holding it tight close to the jig and flicking it would work also. Will have to experiment with it and see if I can make it work while you try it out and make a mess first. Who knows, maybe it will sork laying it on a hot jig if you find the right string that won't melt or burn and stick to the lure.
I'm gonna try some of your tactics tomorrow on some Big Boys.
Something else to try would be to lay out the paint in a pattern on a board and then role the lure on the paint. I honestly don't know how well this will work but it may be just the trick. Just make sure to lay a thin layer of powder down. Maybe try it on a sponge with a light weight cardboard so it will bend and mold to the shape of the lure for complete coverage. Maybe aluminum foil on a sponge will work better.
I need to try some of these ideas for myself. I am just better at the thought process than doing it while I have the paint out. Good thing I write about my ideas here or I would forget them all.
Powder paint spray gun, wire mesh. Gett'em while there hot.Cool reheat.
use a small paint brush to sprinkle one color over another, two tone,splatter. I use it alot to put red on as a blood look. I also do it to spinner baits 3 layered colors.
I like airbrushing lol its easier

This started out from a thread on Tackle Underground and I went and got all the info.
"On one of my lure making websites one of the members talked about your product called Powder Water. I read the page but it doesn't get really deep into it except mix 1-1. Now questions I'd have are once I dip my baits do I cure them, then put this on example making dots for eyes and then recure again???? Will this Powder water work with other brands or just yours???
Could you please provide some more info on this, as it sounds like something that could be really helpful in lure making.
Thanks for any help you can give me. I'll pass it on to the folks at my lure making site.

Yes, you would re-cure again. It would be great for the eyes and whatnots!
It will work with all brands but with metallics you will need to test to make sure it blends with before putting on actual production parts.

I am trying toget ahold of CSI paint to get them to make a new product but no luck so far. If they can and will make it then we would never have to worry about doing detail again.
Columbias water works pretty well. Ive tried to figure out what they add to the water to make it work but havent got there yet! I thought it was detergent at first. Ive even tried to dissolve powder in MEK( If you do this DONT use open flame to heat jig:eek:)
That is funny - I have been thinking the same thing. In fact, a few days ago I started a thread on Tackleunderground because I didn't know about the old thread. Plus, I just ordered some powder water from Columbia Coatings yesterday.
I was wondering whether anyone has tried to add powder water to the powder paint and then use it in an airbrush? I have tried using the Badger Sandblaster Airbrush that everyone recommends for powder paint and I have gotten mixed results. I wanted something easier and a bit more consistent.

P.S. I have also tried to dissolve paint in MEK. I did get it to dissolve, but I haven't tried to airbrush it yet.
Psilvers what probs are you running into with the airgun?
To be fair I have only used the airgun a little bit. But it seems that the spray is a bit uneven i.e. sometimes I get it to spray nicely, but at other times I have to mess with it a bit. It also seems that there is a lot of overspray - by that I mean wasted paint. It did take me a bit of fidgeting to get a nice spray and the spray is not that consistent. Maybe it is just me, but it seems to be a bit of a pain.
RonDon, youv'e tried the MEK before, how did you like it? Does it make the
paint streak? I read about it on another forum and they claimed you use it
like vinyl paint, except that there's a 2 part curing process. 1)let cure until
solvent is dry 2) bake at 425deg for 15 min. Personally, I've been shy about
trying it because of the high temp on the 2nd cure. However, if it works a
guy could really get some awesome definition!:cool:
I've been playing the last couple of days on some 2 1/2 oz. "H" jigs for some patterns.I decided to wait until the Columbia water gets here,lol.Now I have some jigs to get sandblasted.
What in the heck would you be doing with 2 1/2 oz Style H jigs in Arizona? Must be some HUGE crappie there :D Maybe stripers?

I keep the East Coast supplied with thier striper baits,lol.I have 1 lake here that is full of stripers,they want them out.It's fun to chuck around baits that are as big as most of the fish there.
I could not figure it out either. I just heat up the jigs for five minutes, put on a white base coat, bake five minutes then add the second top coat of a differing color(s). Bake the jigs 17 minutes at 360 degrees in the toaster oven.Quote:

Crappiedoc it worked but sometimes i would get a bubble in the paint. Maybe i wasnt curing it right cuz i dang sure didnt break the 400 mark!
RonDon- I tried to dissolve some paint in MEK, but I haven't yet given it a try. Do you think it could be sprayed?
azslabber - Let us know how the powder water works. I should get mine this week. They delayed shipping it because of the heat.
