I have been trying to figure out how to get a foam floating fly not to tangle with a scud or other dropper without much success. Once in a while it works but most of the time I get a mess and spend more time untangling than fishing. I am using up to 5 feet from the floater to the dropper.
Anyone have any tips for keeping them from tangling up?

I wil have to give that a try, shouldn't be too hard to modify my normal cast to perform it. I have tried horizontal casting in the past with some luck so I shouldn't have too hard of a time getting it down. Hopefully it will give me a lot more fishing time and less untwisting time. Thank you d4d.
Haven`t tried this but plan too, perhaps the problem is too long a distance between bugs?

Five feet is a long distance between popper and dropper, but people often throw indicator rigs this long (and even longer.) If you open your loop or use a Belgian cast, it really shouldn't matter.Quote:

Maybe I will try a short leader, I am after rising fish after all. But I do get a lot of hits on the drop. Maybe I will try a short sropper and see if they still hit on the drop. It is a short time and I have a slow drop so maybe I don't need such a long leader.
About how long a dropper is the norm?

Stand sideways so you can see your cast and cast from left to right watch what your line is doing. And SLOW down most people whip the rod back and forth 100 MPH.
I do fairly well going slow but will try slower if I can. Don't know how fast I throw but I lift more than jerk so who knows. Can't hurt to try.
Here's an option I saw on another board:
For years I always used foam spiders or the smallest popper I could find. One day someone convinced me to use a hare's ear or similar nymph on a dropper below the popper. I caught 80% of the fish on the nymph, and had some tangle problems with the dropper getting tangled with the popper.
Then I went to just a nymph without the popper, and actually increased the fish-per-hour because I wasnt stopping to untangle things.
Used this in FL in salt water years ago. Slight difference was that my mentor tied his dropper line to the curve of the poppers hook. We used a nonstop popping retrieve so the dropper never affected the popper, which was dime sized face or bigger anyway. Sea Trout loved it and it helped put more fish in the cooler. 2 on at once was a hoot.
