I have a 788ci and thought the changing speed was due to going so slow that when the unit senses a change in position that it jumps to the new position. If that makes sense. I am interested in Joby's answer.
When I am trying to go slow it bounces from about 0.2 to 2.0 with some +/- variations on each end.
I have a 787 with the internal antenna and experienced the same thing. HB tried to fix it a couple of times then just said the heck with it and sent me an external antenna for free and that solved the problem. Been perfectly happy ever since.
I was wondering if the external antenna would fix the problem but at $150 for the puck that is an expensive gamble/guess.
This probably goes back to the slow processor problem they had.
So even if you have the internal GPS you can just plug the external in and it will pick up the external GPS. My dad is having the same problem with his 788with internal.
I know you can connect the external antenna, but was unsure if the external antenna would fix the issue or not. But with the expense of the external antenna, it does leave a bad taste in your mouth after spending that much on a depth finder to have issues like this.
I was going to bite the bullet and buy the puck when I went to BPS Monday but they don't even stock it at that store.
I already have the extru pucks just was not sure if it would pick-up the external entenna. If I hooked it through the interlink would it pick-up the external antenna?
There were a lot of chatter on here last year and before about the slow GPS with and without going through the interlink. Don't do it. It updates VERY slow.
Is there anything blocking the unit.. I have a 997 and mounted the puck on the base the unit was mounted on had same problem raised the puck 7in. fixed everything.
My unit has the internal antenna.
For anyone watching this thread, I am talking with HB and just sent them some pictures on the mounting of the head unit and a video of the fluctuation in the speed while sitting still in my back yard.
Hopefully I can get a solution to this.
I have a 788c with the external antenna and I've had zero issues with the speed on the gps. I've only had it about 3 months and other than cutting a transducer wire (brain fart on my part), have been nothing but tickled with it. I watch the speed constantly while trolling or spider rigging and there is no fluctuation in the readout unless I slow down or speed up on my own.
I have a 788ci and have had problems with the speed also, sent it back to humminbird and they just upgraded the software. Still has not fixed the problem.
Fellow Humminbirders.
We are just about to roll into year 3 of the GPS complaints.
Well hopefully they can figure something out on this. For the moment I have their ear I think. They want me to send them a screen shot of the satellite diagnostics screen. Will have to do it when I get home tonight.
Well if anyone wanted better performance out of the 788ci on the speed bounce problem, you can forget it unless the external puck will provide it for $150.00 extra. Here is the respose from Humminbird:

After swapping e-mails with one of the Engineers he said that it sounds like all is working correctly. He thinks that the variability you are seeing is due to multi-path error which could possibly be reduced with an external GPS Receiver – but there are no promises of success with that.
Dang Whiskers, that doesn't sound right. I have had a 788 on the bow for 6mos or so and haven't had any of the problems brought up on this thread. BTW, my antenna is internal too.
Maj you may have one that is a later model with a faster processor or something in it to where the bounce is not a problem. I sent them a video showing the speed bounce even when sitting in my back yard.
I'll have to pay attention to it a little closer on the next trip, but I haven't noticed a speed fluctuation on mine either. Bought new in Dec. or Jan. '10
