Whats an AFRICAN NIGHTCRAWLER!! I've never heard of those kind. LOL Am I missing something? I thought there were only 2 kinds here in the U.S, the canadian and the ones we've got here. Got any pics
I'll put some pics up when my new stock of breeders get here tomorrow or Friday.I just turned the dirt in my bin and got feed in there. It's hard to not turn the food into the dirt trying to get some pictures. They are a dark red 8" worm. They are not as fat as a Canadian but are 10 times as lively.I would say if you could imagine a cross between a red worm and a Canadian Crawler. They love the heat and under 65 degrees don't do well.
Never:confused: heard of them--where did you buy them --???
I got mine from a place called organic worm farm .com.He had the best deal at the time.Great service and had a forum for new worm farrmers, lol. There are hundreds that sell them. These worms are for hot weather, like here in Arizona.
When you get the photos I'd like to see them! I bet those will catch an indiana catfish quick!!!!!
These just came in the mail an hour ago.5:30 pm after being in transit for 3 days then spending a full day in one of them little mail things in 110 degree weather, lol. Not pretty.Scares a lot of people but they will be fine in a day or two.Just wanted to show what a worm looks like fresh out of the mail truck.Wait for 2 days,I will post a picture on Saturday evening.Check out what they look like then.
That's pretty cool I've got night crawlers up to 15 inches in length that I have been growing for some time if anybody is interested
Everybody is interested.Let's see some of them monsters. These get to about 8 to 10 but a 15 inch fat crawler will catch a bunch of gills, lol.
hope they never cross them with European crawlers like they did bees. Would hate to have man killing night crawlers in the boat.:D
What is the best worm for the weather that is hot in the summer but cold in the winter.....I'm here in Oklahoma, and will be keepin them in the garage year round.
Thanks,
AC
The ones that I raise are really good when it's hot. They don't need to be in the cooler. But,when it gets down to under 65 degrees they don't even move around. Then when it's cold outside the Canadians are great.I really don't think there is a worm that is great both cold and hot.I picked the Africans because it's always hot here in Arizona.Heck, when it's under 50 degrees here that is a cold day.If I lived somewhere with 4 seasons I would probably raise the European Nightcrawler.Go online to like organicwormfarm.com and read about them. They give details on each kind of worm.
1 pound of worms for a square foot of surface area that is 6 inches deep.If there is more worms then that they will just stop laying seed cacoons and just get bigger. Each worm has about 6 babies a week,so do the math, lol.Shredded newspaper is what worked best for me with a scoop of soil for the grit that they need to eat it.Cornmea, oatmeal and eggshells is what I put in the food processer to make into a powder and just sprinle on the top of the bed so you can tell how much they eat.I use a flower pot and after putting in the grain sprinkle it to make moist. Not too much water though. You have to experiment to see how much food to use for what they eat.If you feed them daily like that,it keeps the bugs away.
Ok. Thanks
They only eat off the top though,as do all nightcrawlers
I just got my first order of the european nightcrawlers. Here in Arkansas, all we could get were the canadians, but these do not have to be kept cool. Uncle Jims Worm Farm was the most reasonable in price. They also have lots of information on their aite as does worms4earth.com. I bought these to raise for sale in our bait shop. They say they are more active once in the water and last longer and give more action to attract the fish.

I've never heard from anyone that has tried to raise Europeans.I am very interested in what weather they thrive in.Let us know how they do.
AZ: Spoke with Bruce @ organic worm farm yesterday for nearly 45 minutes. Getting ready to order some of those Africans. Just have to get the bins and get them ready. Exchanged some really good ideas on how to prepare them. Bruce is a really nice guy and very helpful. Thanks for their web site!
