We fish all the time at night & do quite well i,ve got a couple of green lites we just throw them over the side then fish on the other side. You are right about the boat traffic too. Just make sure that you got pleanty of light in the boat where you can see how to bait up and take off your fish.:D
A question for you night fishermen.
Do you set your lights on the surface or sink them down to your fishing depth. I've always floated head lights on the surface but am seeing the green lights weighted down below the surface.
Just curious.
Also do you find full moon or no moon to be best?
Thanks
night fishing is the way to in the summertime for crappie no jet skieers
I tried last night using a couple green lights. i was at D'arbonne under hwy 33 bridge. didn't have any luck with the perch just caught alot of barfish. I thought you had to fish under the green light. didn't know i needed to fish otherside of boat.. what depth water should i fish in? the channel or 8-12ft deep water?
For those that know D'arbonne would it be best to fish deep water by the spillway or the channel from 33 bridge towards La 2. I'm thinking spillway
I like all the feedback, been leaning toward submersable lights.Should I get the green or white. Also I noticed that you used minnows, have you ever used jigs.
Summer time for me means a couple hours in the very early morning or night fishing and I absolutely love night fishing!
Use to bass fish at night too and started that probably in the very late 1960's, but all my nights now are for crappie fishing.
I use a jig on bottom (kind of heavy like 1/8 or even 1/4 Oz.) then up from that I tie on a Gamakatsu Drop Shot hook #1 or #2. Usually catch bigger fish on the jigs, but I do think crappie chasing and eating the minnows can spur some action form all of them.
I have used both green light and white and had good luck with all. I have a 3' long Fisherman's Green Light that I have had a used for a long time now, but I bought some of the LED Lights that are high intensity type (like $120 each) and I like them best as they are about indestructible and small and very light on battery draw.
I can tell you much about the low end green lights, but I know the white Q-Beam Starfire II lights work well, but have had a couple of them break for some reason or another. You could get one or two of these to find out how you like it.
On all of the lights don't take them out of the water when burning. Almost all these are for use under water and they all go down only like 1'.
Skip
do you fish in the deep water 30 to 40ft with your lights or shallower around the docks. I'm thinking they stay in the deeper water this time of year and just come up to feed.
I use the qbeam starfire II lights. They are sold here at Academy in Alexandria for $13.99 each. They put out 250k candlepower each and don't use much battery power.
We drop the 2 lights in the water on the same side of the boat. One goes near the front of the boat and one towards the rear. We then fish right on the outskirts of the light. You want to drop your bait in the edge of the darkness and not directly in the light. Bass, crappie and other gamefish hide in the dark and they only dart into the light to grab some food and quickly dart out. By dropping your bait in the edge of the darkness your esentially dropping it right in front of the game fish and they will consider it easy prey with little risk.
If you put it in the light it gets mixed in with all the other baitfish and I've noticed less bites and strikes.
We try to space the 2 lights out far enough away from each other that we leave a strip of darkness between them and we fish that darkness.
Another trick you can use is get about 10 yo-yo's and tie them all around your boat about 5 on each side. I tie them to my rodholders, anchor ties, etc. Bait them with shiners and drop your light over the side of the boat. Then just sit back and read a book or snooze until you hear the pop of one of the yo-yo's, lol. It will feel like your cheating though.
Went last night. Used my 4ft green magnet for the first time i had been using the cheaper lights i got at bass pro which do work well but my new light was awesome. caught 12 very nice crappie, 1 bass, 2 catfish and i dont now how many barfish. i was using shiners but i was wondering if you'll prefer shiners or jigs for night fishing. i know its a pain fooling with shiners at night but the natural movement is hard to beat. and what color do you pefer? i think the black or dark color with a light color tail would be best.
Keep the info coming... I just bought my first night light, a green LED submersible rig. Looking for make my first night trip soon, once finished with minor boat repairs.
I too would prefer to use jigs,I have read somewhere that blue and green work well,I ordered 2 aqua star lights last night and hope they make it here by the weekend,600,000cl which draws about 8 amps each so i should get about 14 hrs per light on a deep cycle 115 amp battery,I want to give them a try on poverty in those deep water coves where they enter the main lake, should be a good place to try.The website is [url]www.fishinglightsetc.comhttp://www.fishinglightsetc.com Give it a look and tell me what you guys think I ordered the combo 12vt lights with 100w bulbs.
hey all....new to the boards and i know this is an older thread, but felt i needed to comment.
DDO NOT go spend a couple hundred bucks on the LED green light like they have on ebay. you can build the same light setup for about $30.
you can purchase the waterproof green LED light strip roll on ebay for about 12-14 bucks, they wire directly to 12v, and they are rated at 50,000 hours continuous use. the high $$$ lights use the exact same waterproof light strips ( come with 300 LED lights in a tape roll, and put out 9000-10,000 lumens). get yourself a piece of 2" PVC pipe and caps. the light tape is waterproof sticky back and will adhear directly to the PVC pipe if it is clean and free of dust. drill a hole in the top of one of the caps and push it onto your PVC tume, and just below the cap, drill a small hole to accommodate the wires from the strip, and wrap the strip around the PVC. once you have the strip in place, pull the top cap back off and wire your light tape. feed your wire ( whatever type and length youve decided to use for your primary battery cables/wires) thru the top cap, tie a knott in it so it wont pull thru on your connections.....now what ive done is i put my bottom cap on ( using PVC glue) so it wont leak, and dumped about 1/2lb-3/4lb of old unused bullets ( you can use lead bullets, wheel weights or whatever) in the top of the tube, and thenfilled it the rest of the way to the top of the pipe with old plastic shopping bags to keep the lead in place and so it wont rattle around. put PVC glue in your top cap and seal it up and your ready to go!
When fishing at night and light submerged 1 ft under water, how deep do you fish your bait? I tried night fishing once and was not sucessfull and i have a itch to try again.
dont have any pix while building it but i will post a pic of the finished product in a bit...
fshing depth depends on how deep the fish are!....best thing to do is try different depths until you find the sweet spot, or if your fishing several on the boat, have everyone fsh dfferent depths until you find what depth their hitting. remeber to fish the FRINGES of your light!....

if i remeber ill take some pix tonight while im out of the light in the water
im a licensed guide in northern california and crappie fish pretty much 6 days ( or nights when its as hot as it is now) a week and have super luck using this light setup at night.
these were all taken in about 3 hours under the light pictured....

the light is B-R-I-G-H-T, trust me......
Sorry I missed this question earlier, I usually fish on the edge of a creek and most are dropping off to more than 30'. Some just 31 and some more. I don't usually drop my light more than a foot or a little more under water.
also important note: for keeping bugs and skeeters away get a ThermaCell! It may just keep them on the edge of your boat on a bad night, but at least they are not in the boat with you. Sometimes we use 2, one at each end next to us.
also the light I use you wouldn't want to take a picture of when on, it's way too bright to look at. I tried it next to a light that had 960 LED's and this light just blew that one away. It only has 36 LED's, but they are Cree which means the best and brightest LED lights in the world!
Ordered lights today. Fishing Caney Lake in La. Not much luck in daytime.
Can you post a link to the lights you use.
thanks
does anyone on this thread fish around houma Louisiana at night
That is just too cool for school. I am going to make a couple.
Do you seal the holes where the wires go through the PVC with silicone, to keep water from getting inside?
Back about 1975 I fi9shed Toledo Bend for bass a few times a year. Stayed at Sammy Gill park. One morn I went to the marina to pick up a bait or 2 and a morning twinkie. 2 guys were buying ice. I asked if they already had em this morning and they replied that they crappie fished under lanterns. I asked if they did any good. They said we caught 165. I asked if there was any size to them. They said come out and see what you think. they opened 2 big coolers packed with slab crappie. all 1.5 to 2 pounds. Barely room for ice. They turned me on to a spot where the river came up to 17 feet and had a ledge about 4 ft wide before it came up. They had a houseboat set up really nice . said they sunk "Range Cubes" to attract baitfish. We set up on the ridge about 40 yards away the next night. Only got 48 before my partner froze out. This was a ways up the San Miguel . From then on we always night fished when we went back. would love to do it again.
I love these Gomer Snerd! lol
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.
The two loudest sounds are a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and one that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.
If the sane people are all armed the crazy people will get off fewer shots.

I wouldn't expect a reply from TheCrappie, as this is an old thread and when I checked his profile, looks like his last post as well. After I read this last night, I jumped on EBAY and found these strips, but can't tell how the power is supplied to them. I'd like to try it though, so if you find out something, through trial or research, please share on this thread, and I'll do the same. BTW...welcome to the board! :)
