I've heard a lot of people mention night fishing for crappie on here. I've never tried it but it sounds fun. Do you have to use floating lights? I assume minnows? Do you fish above brush just like you would in the summer during the day?

Yes it is fun to fish under the stars.
There are many types of lighting that is availabel on the market.
Many will argue who's is better.
When you fish pretend you are fishing the same during the day as night
and you will do fine.
A lot of people call it Night stalking. Here is one of the better articles about fishing for Crappie at night.
Night stalking article
I need to get me a spare battery and some submersible lights...I would love to try this soon. I've fished at night lots of times..but never with sub-lights and this style.
with the days being so hot, I am thinking that I may try to start fishing for crappie at night. Any advise? What is the best light? What is best spot? Open water, channels, humps, docks, brush piles, ect? What is best bait? do the Mo Glow jigs work well at night? What color of light, Green or white? Submersable light, or floating light? How many lights? How long before you can expect bait fish or how long should I sit before I decide to move?
I tend to fish the same spots I would in the day. As for lights I have a plain white light I clamp to the side of the boat to see my lines and a homemade green led about 3 feet under the surface. If the bait fish are around they'll be their soon. Other than the lights I fish the same way I do in the day. I haven't done any night fishing this year but love it when I can go.
Thanks for the info dinobot!!!!! Watched some Youtube videos and there are some that have a lot of great action.
I haven't fished at night yet--but I going to as soon as I can get the stuff together. Can't wait to try it!
Ranger and tried them Wednesday night! We probably caught 50 in three hours but all of them were small fish! Eb
Brian, what is small? Small to you guys may be 12" fish. How many lights out? Bait?
Minners, 4 lights-2 in the water and 2 above...smaller than 10" and probably most were around the 7"to 8" length. We had the racks out and used Capps and Coleman rigs.......Ranger
Another thing we did was use an underwater speaker and hooked it up to the boom box and played country and western music..and were those crappie ever doing the line dance...30 minutes after the music started you could see the locator fill up with bait fish from 12' to 24' and that my friend at 24' was the thermocline....hope this helps..try it..it works......Ranger
Shhh mark that's top secret! EB
I have a trip planned at 1 a.m. in the morning.

Thanks Guys for the info. I will be heading out tomorrow night and giving it a shot. Will be baiting a couple holes with some Soured corn and after a few hours of crappie fishing, will head back and try my luck at some cat fishing. Will post pics if I do any good!!!!!
good luck
Woodworker, headed out to lake carl blackwell just west of stillwater. Will let you know tomorrow how i do. Have two holes baited with sour corn for the last couple days so if no crappie should get a cat or two.
Well, not able to post much good news today. Didnt find any crappie last night. After two hours and three spots, I never did get the baitfish into my area. Not sure whats up. I fished above some brush piles that we put out this last winter and I also fished a structure. I moved over to the Baited Catfish holes and did okay, but nothing worth keeping. I actually switched to my crappie rods for catfishing because the holes were loaded with small channels around 1 to 1.5 pounds. Lots of fun. Used Cj's Punch Bait in Shad Flavor and a small treble hook.
Well, that's kinda of a bummer. Sorry it didn't work out for you. Maybe someone can give you an idea of what's up. That's fishing, so maybe next you'll get into em.
Merle, it wasn't too bad. Nice to be on the water and at least I had some pretty fast action with the Catfish. Will have to head up to Keystone some night and try it. I know a couple slips that are loaded with trees and sunken piles.
