what's the slickest way to get a hook out of bream that

have swallowed the hook?


this may have been discussed already but i haven't seen it. all you need is a pencil and it sharpened. a stick will work too. stick the pencil point end down into the breams throat past the hook and press your thumb against the line against the flat side of the pencil and with the bream hanging down just spin it. the bream will come off like magic. i'd fished a long time before i learned or was taught this way. i'm sure some and maybe a lot already knew it and for the ones that didn't you should carry a pencil in your tackle box.

I've never heard of that method, but I use something similar called a disgorger. It's a pencil-sized piece of plastic with a little notch on the end. It works great.

death, you try the pencil like i said and you'll throw that plastic thang away. really. i tried the deal like you have. it will work but not as slick as the pencil. and i'd bet not one in 50 that read this will try it but if you ever saw it done you'll be amazed. really.

i'd like to try it but am having a little difficulty imagining how to do it...do you spin the fish while holding the line againts the pencil?

I'm just asking because these are English disgorgers that most Americans have never seen. I got them straight from an English tackle shop.

I'd be willing to try your method, but I'm not exactly clear on how to do it. Can you post a video? Also, why do you have to sharpen the pencil?

fishin', i'm not good at explaining things so i'll try again. you take a regular lead pencil. it needs to be the 6 sided kind and not the round kind. sharpen it so the point will go down the breams throat easier. stick the pencil down the fishes throat past the hook an inch or two and with your thumb hold the line against one of the flat sides of the pencil and with the fish hanging tail down/head up spin the fish. just make sure you hold the line tight to the pencil. a rough stick will do too. makes it easier to hold the line against the stick so it doesn't slip.

this way you don't have to look down the fishes mouth to see if you got such and such notch lined up with the line or hook. just poke the pencil, hold the line tight and spin. fast and easy.

I'll have to try that.Went and got a six sided pencil in my hand right now.

Very interesting duckhunter. I will have to try that sometime.

I'm not saying that pencil won't work, but I've been using that red plastic thing with the slit for many years and it works without fail.

Have used this method to remove gut hooked catfish for years, works good but never tried it on gills.

I just show em a class picture from the third grade... the one with Mrs. Moonie up in front of the class. Keep you head back cause that hook comes flying out, along with a few crickets and mayflies. :eek::eek:

Seems to me that any type of disgourging a completely swallowed hook would kill the fish....either immediately or slowly bleeding to death....

If you cut the line and let the hook rust away on it's own...does the fish have a better chance at surviving....??

thank goodness for the pencil today. i got on a big bream and shellcracker bed and gave the pencil a workout. it's slicker than snot.



and i'm not going back fishing tomorrow because i know i'd go back to the same place and do it all over again. i'm too old for two days in a row.

I use long nose pliers and the "through the gill" technique, lift up the gill and locate the hook... remove with the pliers.

The majority of fishermen I see are obsessed with having to take the hook out by going in through the mouth... I've seen a lot of fish killed this way.

i can understand that with bass if you are going to release them but when you are on a bream bed and the fishing is hot and fast and you are going to take the fish home anyway you might as well get the hook out the fastest way possible and get back in the water and catch another. gonna kill'em and eat'em anyway.

Hi olduckhunter,
I must say that this method works GREAT, was it you that posted this a few years back on this site ? This technique is so much better than one of those
Degorger things... because you don't have to try and fine where the hook point
is located in the fish's throat . Half the time I can't see down a small Bluegill's mouth to see where to put the Degorger. This little tip I learned off the internet(Here) has been one of the Best fishing tips ever.This technique works every time I try it... I don't even think about a Degorger anymore.:):):)

My Grandad taught me that trick when I was a young'un, but we used a long bobber to do it. I fly fish a lot for panfish, I have a 2 or 3 pairs of little hemostats with a slight bend in 'em that I use these days, doesn't muss the fly up, and won't break off 4 lb. test leader like spinnin' 'em will.

This method is very fast when you get the hang of it, people are always amazed at how quickly I removed the deep hook and ask me "How'd you do that?"... I've been called a surgeon by some.
