mounting the transducer

where is the best place to mount the transducer on the back of the boat?

18 inches away from the motor and between the ribs on the bottom of the boat.

And for goodness sakes go buy one of them ducer transom mounting board yep the plastic molded type and screw and used GE silicon(5200 series I think) to apply to back of boat-note only use screws above water line. Then U can put ducer on without putting holes in your boat...............See picts of Cane Poles boat recently on here

I used 1 of these for mine. The screws that come with the HB transducers are LONGER THAN THE PLATE IS THICK!!! Make sure you buy shorter screws or you will have holes anyway!

Here's pics of mine. I had to mount mine on the step. It isn't 18" but I have no problems where it's at & I never loose bottom even at 45 mph.

What is the advantage of the plastic board? I see them on quiet a few pics on the SI boards.

It keeps you from putting holes in your transom – especially if you have to move the transducer around a few times to find a spot that works. I definitely would use one.

Best idea

The best idea for the plastic board is go but a 3/4 inch thick plastic cutting board then cut it was a saw to the size you want.
That is what I did.

In the pictures above it appears you defeated the purpose of the board by attaching the board to your boat with screws. Am I seeing that right?

It's OK to mount the plastic board to the transom with screws.

The idea is to have a sacrificial area that will take the holes and the new holes, and the holes that didn't work out instead of making Swiss cheese out of your transom.

When it gets too holy and its time for it to go to plastic heaven, just use the old one as a pattern and cut you a new one and mount in the same old holes you used to mount the old plastic board.
