Thanks for the heads up, Slipcork. I e-mailed Ben Batten (whose name is on the flyer) at Game and Fish to see what they need volunteers to bring Saturday to the lake. They are apparently not looking for boats or tools, just volunteers to help with the work. I plan on being at Jolly Rogers Marina at 8:00 on Saturday. Hope to meet some of you central Arkansas crappie.commers there.
Hey Paronite,
Congrats on the catch today on Maumelle. Any size to the crappie? Also, what did you catch them on, if you don't mind sharing that? Thanks for the post.
Half dozen 1lb to1.5 lb. rest dinks. crickets

The dead sea is what my bass fishin buddies call it.
I havent crappie fished out there but have burned up some crickets catchin bream there. Never caught any really good bream but havent fished out there much. Had a couple of really good bass trips out there. Need to go for the white run some time but it is hard to pass up good crappie fishin to go after whites.
Any one go? What you think?
Slipcork:
Peronite and I were there Saturday. The volunteers put together hundreds of PVC structures in the morning. Game and Fish was still hauling them out in boats to drop in the lake when I left at 1:00. I understand that someone (Game and Fish I think) will post GPS coordinates for all of the structures dropped in the lake, and about 10 of the largest clusters are also being marked with buoys. I would guess between 20 and 30 people showed up at some point to work.
Just curious. I have bass fished there several times and done pretty decent. But what does it take to catch any good bream there? How deep do you have to fish?
Hey gang. This is Ben Batten from AGFC. What's been said so far is true. On Saturday May 22nd, 2010, we dropped over 700 PVC structures into Lake Maumelle. We are getting together next Tuesday (June 1st) at Jolly Roger's in the morning to build at least another 100, or more and put them out. If anyone wants to come out and help, please let me know (501-978-7317 or [email protected]).
We placed 500 structures under 10 different buoys (50 per buoy). The locations were chosen by studying maps, talking with anglers, and using the professional judgement of three different fisheries biologists. They are in a variety of different types of locations and depths, including humps, depressions, road beds, an old pond levee, etc.
The location of the remaining structures were chosen by the public volunteers that came out to help on Saturday (5-22-2010). They were all placed under the supervision of AGFC employees, and GPS coordinates were taken on all points. These points are going to be available in the near future in several formats. We will have an electronic file to download directly to your GPS, or GPS enabled depthfinder on our website (Arkansas wildlife – Arkansas outdoors – Arkansas Game and Fish Commission). When this is available, I'm going to start a new thread on here, with a link to this file. We are also going to make a brochure that will be available at AGFC headquarters and at Jolly Roger's Marina on Lake Maumelle. Please be patient while we put these together. These points were taken by five different handheld GPS devices, and getting them together and put into a map and a brochure is going to take a little bit of time. Plus, letting these things green up and mature will make them better.
With that being said, there are already fish being caught on these structures (four days later, with a report of one producing on day two). I was able to spend a couple of hours fishing the lake Wednesday afternoon. I probably actually fished for one hour, and spent the other hour riding around, looking at structures on the depth finder. However, myself and my two fishing partners were able to catch the four keeper crappie (1 = 15", 3 = 13") in the pictures.
15" crappie:

Besides these fish, we also caught and released:
5 other crappie
2 spotted (Kentucky) bass
1 largemouth bass
1 white bass
1 green sunfish
1 bluegill
So far so good in my book. I'll update you guys when the points are available, in a new thread, and I would like some updates in that thread or this thread about anyone that fishes these things.
All I will say is WOW.
I wished I'd had known about this work going on sooner so I could be a part of it. I live about 10 minuets from the lake and have never caught anything out of it.
I keep running into Wildman here and there and have told him how much I appreciate the AGFC compared to other states I have lived in. And tell him he is invited to a coyote nightstalk in Pleasant Heights for me.
Thanks so much.
