I want to pour and paint some horsehead (Road Runner) jigs. I have a powder bed and a heat gun. I am also fairly familiar with powder painting. How do I do it without messing up the swivel?

Wrap aluminum foil around it.Get it all and spend some time doing it.After you paint it,remove the foil for curing.
ya i went down this road not to long ago and from what everyone has told me and what i have tried its the only way to PP them. you have to wrap all of your swivles with alumin foil its very tedious but its the only way to end up with a good product so you wrap your swivles with foil and PP your heads and then before you cure your paint be sure to remove the foil from the swivles cause if u dont well good luck removing the foil afterwards the PP will be like an epoxy after curing Good luck and have fun :) watch some TV or something while you wrap your swivles makes time go by faster :) trust me been there :D

This has been discussed many times here on this board. I make them and powder paint them. My own way is to sit down in front of the TV and using tin foil wrap the swivels.
I know its a pain in the butt but it works for me. After you're done with powder coating them, strip the tin foil off BEFORE CURING!!!! If you forget it's a pain in the butt to get it off.
After curing you might have to use a sharp razor blade to trim any paint off the swivel that's connected to the jig head, I get a few and I carefully get it off cause I like the whole swivel to spin not just the bottom half.
The picture isn't great but this is with the swivel covered with tin foil

In this photo you can see where I forgot to strip the tin foil on one jig and the other pony's with the tin foil off

If you have any more questions just ask and I'll be glad to help, as will everyone else.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. I will have to try the tin foil method and see how it works.

Perfect clean crane swivels and hook eyes NO FOIL, NO TAPE, NO SHRINKTUBING !!!! The secret tool is " H2O " Yes WATER !!!! After you heat the jig just dip the eye and the swivel in cool H2O and then shake and dip in the powder paint. It works because you are cooling off the metal and the powder paint will not stick to a cold surface. Try it and spend your time fishing instead of wrapping tiny pieces of foil around swivels. IT WORKS !!!

Slabo,
Thanks. i will have to try that. BTW, I see you are from just S of Memphis. I used to live in Cleveland, MS. When I went to Memphis I would always go to Sportsman' Warehouse. I see they are no longer in business. Did they close up or were they bought out?
Thanks again for the tip. I will definitely try it.

They closed a little over a year ago but I have heard rumors that the Southaven store was going to reopen. The entire chain was bought out and they closed several stores.
Do any of you guys use the butt rings instead of split rings for the small 1/16 & 1/32 horsehead jigs? I was thinking about ordering some to try and was interested in your experience.
I've been using the butt rings as of lately. They are still a pain, but are much easier to use.
All you need is some good split ring pliers. I will post one tomorrow if I remember that work well. Some care just crud, but some are good and not as high as the really high end ones.
Oh here one is, I have not tried the highest ones here, but they are for bigger split rings anyway. The 2nd one down...

skiptomylu - the 2nd pair down are recommended for size 2 and up. Do you use these for size 1 & 0? I have a pair similar to the 2nd pair down but maybe the ?tooth? is not as wide. Thanks for your recommendation.
I only use size #2 and maybe the next down is better for smaller ones, but even though I have that pliers too, I still only use size #2 split rings.

You bet it works!! I wanted to do some horseheads but was reluctant cuz of the foil wrapping. I finally got my hands on some jigs and blades and tried Slabo's method and it works great. I got a little pill bottle and filled it level full of water, heated my jig a little longer than usual. Then clamped the forceps onto the eye to keep paint out of it them dropped just the swivel into the water, shook it off a second then into the powder paint. Quick as you pull it out spin the swivel with your forefinger and thumb to make sure all the powder is out. Worked great. If you haven't tried this, you should. If it weren't for the split rings, I could do one almost as quick as a regular jig.
My thanks to you Slabo.
By using a spray gun I do not have to worry about keeping the crane swivel free.. Since I multi coat I turn the swivel after every coat of paint. After curing I do the same thing turn by hand to make sure it spins free. Used to use a small pair of needle nose but broke too many swivels.
Getting the spray system down pat was a headache. But once its set up its so much easier than any other PP system. The fluidizing bed system that seems to work well for others was a nightmare for me. Tried three different fluidizing beds and I don't know how many different aerators. They all volcanoed or just did not work right.
For one color heads I think the fludizing bed is probably the fastest technique though.
