Called Scott and wanted some rod holders to mount on the t-rail system on my war eagle. He got some details and custom made these. They arrived about 5 days later. They look great and work even better. Fully adjustable and can move to the back of the boat for trolling, up front, or on the sides to run crankbaits. Great product at a great price!
Well now, ain't that speshul. That's about slick as snot right there. Scott's a good egg. Just don't tell him we said so. Don't want his head to swell up.

OK, now for my critique: Lose the wing nuts. Wing nuts are for flinging into the neighbors yard that you can't stand to lay in wait for his lawn mower. And that's about all they're good for. Put some knobs on there. Then you'll have my seal of approval.

The problem with knobs,at least on tite-loks, is they strip loose from the bolt.
That's what they call operator error. Try tightening them with your left hand. Obviously your right forearm is ummmmmmm, well.......let's say "over developed". Bwahahahahaha.

I still don't understand what stops the rods from being pulled over the front of the rod holder and in to the wa-wa when you hang into a 10# catfish or drum when cranking from the side of the boat?
yikess...I was like you untill I got my hiteks. If you are pulling crankbaits straight out the back of the boat...you have your rod holders turned up a little. The rod cannot be pulled out with out a perfectly straight out of the rod holder pull .......with the holder turned up some and the fact that the crank is running deep and the line angle is pulling down that rod handle will just kinda lock up in the holder. I have stood out in my yard and pulled and yanked on the line and its not coming out. Pushing or trolling off the front you can turn the holders down because your lines are going straight down.
Yikes, I was worried about the same thing. Now, I haven't tried pulling cranks with the setup yet but this is what i think. The weight of the rod and force of the crank bait pulling on the rod makes the rod tip pull down/ to the side. In turn, it pressures the rod handle up which catches the holder. It can only roll so much with all the pressure, not letting it come out. If you had a catfish, the pressure would be greater, not letting the rod come loose. Now if the fish runs straight perpindicular to the boat/ rod holder...we might have a problem. Like i said im not sure, but this is what im thinking. After i try it..ill let yall know.

Its a leverage thing.....Cranking from the side of the boat it locks in even tighter it seems like.
I have rod holders in my boat that came with it. Those you have on bay boats for trolling in the bays and such. I had mine last year at about a 45 degree angle while trolling around for speckeled trout or Redfish. SOMETHING hit it and took my 150 dollar bait caster and my 150 dollar rod down to Davie Jones locker. No idea what it was but I was trolling a mirrolure and the next thing I know my rod and reel are flying out the back. The holder I had mine is LOOKS like it'd hold a rod 10 times better than that
When your pulling cranks 100-150 ft behind the boat there won't be a lot of down pressure. The pressure will be on the side but I'm sure they will work fine.
G-3 I pull directly off the back like you mentioned and I have to angle the rod tip up to get the pressure I need against the handle. I have found that this will put so much pressure that it will actually indent my cork handles.
I get what you saying about the cranks when their far back. I spoke to Scott about it before I ordered and he said they havent had problems with it. Ill let yall know how they work when I pull Saturday with em from the side.
I don't have hi-teks, but mine are the same basic design. The part of the design that overcomes what you're worried about - losing a rod, is the the fact that the holder craddles the handle between either side of the wire form. Essentially, the rod would have to jump up about half or more of it's height to clear the craddle created by the aluminum rod form. When pulling off the front with heavy weights and hitting snaggs or big catfish, I have had the rod jump out and scare me, but I've never come close to losing one. The rod just rolled around and stayed in the holder.
When pulling off the back, the up angle should keep the rod in as long as the holder is tight enough not to slip down and give straight line pull. Assuming you have enought oomph on the holder to keep it from rotating, I don't think you'd have a problem. My holders, I have problems getting them locked tight enough to assure me of them not rotating downward and for that reason, I've never tried it from the back. Hi-teks probably would lock better than mine though.

All this talk about possibility of loosing a rod has me 2nd guessing maelf about the hitech, might be keeping the ones I got.
The way the hiteks fasten down they will not work loose. I had some near loses with my Driftmasters when I had them though. To each his own but I have tried 4 different kinds now and I like the hiteks the best.Quote:

I will try to take some pictures tommorrow showing a easy and simple way of guaranteeing that a rod will not come out of the hiteks. It is not needed and I have not done it but I will show you what some folks are doing to eliminate thier unfounded fears.
