The White Bass Are Spawning In False River. Went Yesterday
And Caught 87
First off...Welcome to the forums colen....thanks for the report
What part of the state is false river located in? I've heard it mentioned before but never been there myself. Also curious what you caught them on? jigs or shiners?
False River is located at New Roads, La..... along Hwy. 1 .......close to the Mississippi River.....about 15 mi NW of Baton Rouge......another lake....Old River is about 10 mi North of New Roads close to hwy 1.....good crappie lake....
What is white bass??????
PS
Bruce most people from the lower part of the state call the striped bass. You know, those little yellow fish with the black stripes.

thanks Gene.....I cannot remember ever catching many of those.....if any....I just got back from Bass Pro and yesterday it was Cabellas and Academy......trying to get my gear in shape for a trip out....either out of town company or the wind has kept me close to home.....my boat sits so high and with the windshield it acts like a sailboat so I try to pick my days....looks now like it may be next Tuesday before we have a clear day.....
anxious to try out my new jigs......got me some curly tails also...
Bruce
Yeah, I kinda know what you mean about the wind. I'm not even going to attempt to launch this week end. I think Linda and I will take to the roads and do some sightseeing and visiting, might even make it an overnighter. Maybe the following weekend will be better.

I'd be really careful about keeping all those fish (If indeed you did). There are a lot of hybrids in False River, and the possession limit on them is five per day.
And as a fisherman, you are required to know the difference between them and white bass.
And just FYI, white bass don't spawn in lakes, only in flowing water. Sounds to me like you got into a BUNCH of shad-eating hybrids. How big were your fish?

Mr. Gene, Don't take this the wrong way because I am not sure, but I think you may have your fish mixed up. The one you are describing sounds like what we call a yellow bass. We catch some over at Larto and I have caught a couple in Laccassine pool. This is what they look like.

I think the white bass he is talking about is actually a white bass, similar looking to the yellow bass, but more white in color. Here is a pic of the white bass. I have never caught one down here. Well anywhere's actually.

Your right on the Yellow Bass. Up here on Black Lake you can catch a ton of them. Put a good jig behind a poper and catch them two at a time. We call them bar fish. The White Bass has a 50 fish limit except on TB which has a 25 limit. Yellow Bass has no limit. You can catch a ton of White Bass on Sabine River above TB when they spawn in the spring.
If you want to see the difference in yellow, white, hybrid bass the Texas Wildlife folks have some good information. It pays to know the difference.:D

White bass are also found in the Atch. basin. We've caught them good in Henderson. It's a blast when they're schooling, they will smash a chrome/blue rattle trap.:D
Johnny, you're right. I knew there were two of them and I wasn't sure which they were catching. Here they are called striped bass but are probably yellow bass.

I remember my grandson catching either couple of white bass or a hybrid at Stephenville in the carwash canal not far from the launch. He had one in the boat before I could get my bait in the water. Caught on a shiner, of course. All I remember is it did not taste as good as a largemouth bass.....now I know why....
That is a good link "sportcity"......thanks....I will put it in my favorites...

White bass are commonly called Bar Fish around here and people are divided on if they like them to eat or not. I've mixed bar fish/white bass fillets in with Crappie and had people taste them side by side and you couldn't taste the difference. HOWEVER!!!! When a White bass gets bigger they have a reddish colored line running through the middle of the fillet. That reddish line tastes really fishy if you leave it there and fry it up. It is the main reason people have a bad experience eating that type of fish and develop a hate for them.
All we do is fillet the fish like normal and then cut out that bloodline and you get like 2 skinny fillets instead of one. On the younger fish the line hasn't developed yet so theres nothing to worry about. The meat is white and flaky and very good to eat if you do this.
I have caught them all sizes on larto and in the saline bayous from small to 2.5 lbs.
Now hybrids we call stripers and they are basically a hybrid bass that can get up to like 25 pounds. They stocked them in Cane river and some other places. Don't get them confused with the natural Stripers as there are 2 different kinds. There are Stripers and then there are hybrid stripers.
"The Hybrid striper is a cross between a white bass and a striped bass. Of the three the hybrid grows the quickest."

This is a good site to help ID these fish. We have to watch this while fishing the Sabine river and Toledo Bend. You can bet the game wardens know how to tell the difference.
