I've read so much on curing powder paint and of course we also do it but I'm wondering why. I realize this is to make it durable if you realize they lifetime of a jig is very short I usually don't have a jig on to find out how durable the power paint is after I baked it. We would like the opinion of other jig tires on here to see what they think .
Snake I agree with yea, I never cure the jigs that I am going to use for myself and I have never really noticed a durability problem fishing them that way. But I do bake the ones that I am selling more or less for customer satisfaction than anything else, no complaints yet.
Powder paint a jig and then drop it on a concrete floor... then step on it before you cure it and see what happens.
I will admit that the type of lead you use will also add to the durability of a jig, pure lead is easiest to work with but is less than desireable for durability!
A hard lead jig with a cured powder paint finish is nearly indestructable!!!
Snake I agree it is up to the one using it, personaly I cure all of mine as it is just a easy thing to do.I do it my way I guess as I cure all colors at 395 for 10 mins and have yet to have a complaint.Just my 2 cents
If you're not going to cure the paint why bother spending the money for the powder paint in the first place. I always cure just makes a better looking jig.

I agree with Fatman why use powder paint if you dont cure? just buy cheap acrylic craft paint. I have jigs I have caught at least 200+ gills and crappie on and the paint still looks good. Yeah i could lose a jig in a snag but I would'nt say a jigs life is short.
Having the paint chip in the tackle box or in the mail to a customer is just not an option for me. It's just wayyyyyy too flakey if you don't cure it.
Sometimes when I run some hair a little high on the head, I take a razor blade and trim it off. I have noticed that if it is not baked then the paint flakes off. If baked, it won't chip. It does make you wonder why you bake them sometimes when you lose it on the first cast or two but if I am working the jig around rocks the unbaked head don't last long. A couple weeks ago I caught 18 big crappie on one (baked) kiptail jig and it looked almost perfect untill the 19th crappie made a getaway with it. Thats the one in the picture at my signature. And by the way, I survived the storms that went through today but not so for a lot of our good Mississippii neighbors.
like what Doc said for my personal use I do not care. But when they go to somebody else I put them in the oven. Why do I buy the power paint if I don't put in oven it real simple power paint goes on faster and you do not have any drying time .
If you're not curing your powder paint you may not be getting the full high gloss finish. Curing doesn't take that long, I cure mine at 350-375*F for 20-30 min. and can cure about 40 at a time if I want.
I don't sell any of my jigs, they're all for my personal use and I give some to friends.
I'm with snake river on this one. I never cure my jigs. First I don't fish where there are rocks or hard structure, only marsh grass. Second I don't have a cement floor in my boat (LOL). And third to get the shine and set the powder paint, I run the jig back through the heat to smooth it out. So why use powder paint, it quicker and less messy. By the time I do a dozen and hang to cool, I can start tying feathers on the first one.

There is a certain knack to curing powder paint and it took me forever to find a way that would work for me... and some folks don't want to spend that much trial and error time.
I fish around a lot of rocks and for some reason I have a tendency to bang the side of my boat with my powder painted jigs, and it really irks the crap outta me when I bang my jig on the side of the boat and it chips my powder paint job and I have to retie.:mad:... so I cure the heck out of them.
You really should consider a cement floor in your boat PawPaw... it's what all the really cool kids are doing!

I find that the 10 minute thing doesn't work for me so will use the older time and temps for me. Like 15 minutes on most.

Curing @ higher temperatures increase possibility of excess paint running off, especially in multi-coat applications.

I guess red is baked. I figure I have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.
i say red was not baked, still looks thick around the hook eye but the real test is to throw it up against a bridge or dock

I have too many jigs in my boxes and I understand that, but some have been in there for 4 years now and if they had not been cured they would be chipped with lots of tiny paint pieces in the compartment of the box.
I am curing mine and don't plan on changing that and it's not that big of a deal. I set up painting next to the kitchen and after I get enough painted I put them in the toaster oven and keep painting. As each oven load gets done I put in the next batch, so after all the painting and curing usually I only have one cure to wait on to completely finish painting and curing. So the pretty much extra 15 minutes and over all time away from painting to load the oven may go out to a whole 30 minutes and that is not enough time to keep me from curing my paint.
There are a good many times out on the lake I may give away a jig to some fisherman I don't know and I don't want his to chip either and if all mine are cured I don't need worry about my work looking like it's not good because the darn paint chipped off. So what do you guys that sell jigs and give them away on the water do to make sure you don't give out a jig that the paint will chip off? Why need to worry about that?
Just my take and no need for anyone to do as I do or not, but do what is best for you. You know part of my learned thinking is from my dad and one of his sayings that I heard more than one time is this "any job worth doing is worth doing well" and I try to follow this kind of thinking.

I think the main thing that keeps people from curing their PP is that they apply too much paint and when they cure they have dripping problems and say "to heck with that"!
I had terrible dripping problems when I first started out, but kept working with it and worked through the problem... which brings me to another rule of my life "never give up!"
GCD both of them say a lot about a person in my way of thinking.
