Have you tried fishing Lake Skiatook? I've not fished it in several years, but the last time I did the Crappie fishing was very good in April.
Oolagah is another popular lake with several posters on here
You'll be shocked but there are some huge crappie below zink dam near the PSO getty.
I've caught some hawgs down there. It's up to you if you want to eat them or not. But it's definitely fun. You may even catch a few large saugeyes.
They have 3 eyes down below Zink from what I heard?
FlyGuy,
Don't give up on the Lynn Lane Reseirvoir just yet. I've fished both Yahola and the Lynn Lane Reservoir extensively the last couple of years. Normally Yahola is excellent right about now for Crappie, but they drained it over the winter so it's going to be several years before it's back to its old self... if they re-stock it suitably.
Lynn Lane Reservoir seems to me on a slightly lagged schedule from Yahola. Last year people were catching Crappie real good at Lynn Lane reservoir starting around the end of April and continuing into May. Yahola was real good from mid April through early May. I drive by Lynn Lane reservoir every day so I can monitor when the cars start showing up. Usually when the crappie are biting you'll see 7 or 8 crappie fisherman every morning there before work. If I remember, I'll send you a note when I start seeing the cars show up.
That water comes from Keystone at Zink Lake. The dam is on 31st and Riverside. I've eaten game fish out of there but nothing else. I typically fish it when the water is running. There are all kinds of rumors going around about the pollution levels. I spoke to a biologist that works the area and he confirmed that it's ok to eat the fish.
FlyGuy,
I noticed a few trucks out at Lynn Lane Reservoir this week. I talked to a guy who said they've been catching crappie for about a month now and he mentioned he thinks it's about over. That's not consistent with what I saw last year but who knows. Either way they are catching a few there and it might be worth giving it a shot. Looks like he was throwing Garland jigs. Most the people I saw catching fish last year were throwing minnows.
If you decide to go, let us know how you do!
Thanks bassman, I'll try to get out there this weekend.
Well I made it out to Lynn Lane yesterday afternoon. First I tried throwing bobby garlands near the spillway and then the boat ramp that is near there. A few sandies and no slabs. The water still feels a little cold to me.
Regarding the Zink Dam: Do you catch them mainly when the water is flowing pretty hard? I know it can sometimes be tough to fish that area when the water is full blast unless you have a big huge weight on and your fishing for cats.
Flyguy,
I fished Lynn Lane Reservoir tonight from 8:15 - 9:00 and managed 6 crappie (3 keepers). I started catching a few small ones on black/pink beavertails but switched to an electric chicken bobby garland and managed the 3 keepers in about 10 minutes. Sure wish I would have shown up sooner throwing the right color. As soon as it got really dark around 8:40'ish they completely shut off. I changed to a small rattle trap to try something with some noise and lost something big on the second cast. Broke the lure off on the 3rd cast and went home. I fished the east side of the lake.
Good to hear you had some luck bassman! My brother and I got to do some fishing on a lake near Kiefer tonight and were able to catch some nice bass on plastics and then on the fly. I may try to see if I can catch some Lynn Lane crappie tomorrow evening.
Fished Lynn Lane reservoir again tonight from 8:15 until 9:15. Caught 11 fish, including 9 crappie and 2 bass. None of the crappie were keepers however. My last fish of the day was a 4 pound bass caught on my little crappie jig. Really pretty fish that had a huge mouth like a 6 pounder, however she was thinned out from spawning. Still healthy though and still fun to catch!
Wow, fun catch on crappie gear!
I haven't fished the ol reservoir in 10 years or so. The sandies used to only hit when the water was running out of the spillway on the south end. I never caught any large crappie there. Caught a lot of catfish though.
I went this Saturday with my dad and we fished around the spillway which was running pretty fast. I caught several sand bass and a striped bass or hybrid... all of them fairly small, but fun none the less. My dad caught more of the same and a crappie. We were fishing some road runner heads and black/chart solid tubes. We also had a couple of poles out with shrimp on the bottom to try to catch some of the catfish that are apparently in there (several 16-20" dead ones washed up along the bank), but all I caught was a turtle...
Tulsa has about 15 fishing holes in the city according to the OKDWC website.
Most of them are all just perch, bass, and catfish ponds in various parks, but its nice to hit one on the way to work or on the way home some times.
Those surveys were conducted 10 years or more ago... which I would have assumed would only mean things were better... but after reading Cricket George's treatise on pond care it seems there's a lot that can go wrong in a pond in that ammount of timeI haven't hit up MS6 yet but I did catch about a 2lb bass out of the Garden Ridge Pond and I caught a dinky little 8" bass this morning at Nelson Park. There are some pretty big gills in Metcalf we caught some on some shrimp pieces the other day. The weather has been pretty crazy lately and I've only been fishing them for the last month.
I'm attaching a pic of the one I caught at GardenRidge Pond... caught it off a Rebel Crickpopper. You pretty much have to fish top water there because of all the vegetation.

Very pretty fish. MS6 has some large gills as well.
I hit up MS6 this morning out of curiosity. The rains last night had brought the water up to about 3-4 feet above normal but it has almost all receeded by 7 when I got there this morning. There was still some draining into Mingo Creek (which looked like it had crested at about 10' above its level this morning).
I fished all around it with an electric chicken colored Bobby Garland Stroll'r on a mo'glo jig head with a spinner. I caught one Bass with a severe underbite... I had about 3 more strikes all up close to the bank but I suspect they were bluegills and couldn't get the hole bait in their mouths.
Looking at this fish and the other Bass i posted.. they look like maybe they are spotted bass and not largemouth. Their mouths are lined up with their eyes.
This one was just weird looking...

Has anyone fished this pond. It is directly east of the Creek Turnpike between 51st and 61st st. I think this picture was taken when it was first built because everywhere where you see sand in the picture is now covered up by water. You can access it on 51st street through an old dirt road. Someone told me that it was owned by allied waste management but it doesnt seem to be used for dumping purposes. This pond is huge.

I ran into a local at Lynn Lane reservoir the other night and apart from him telling me the history of fishing at that location he noted that on 61st street way out east they were going to be building another reservoir soon. That's not what you are seeing though, he said that was a strip pit. I didn't ask him who owned it though.
I caught quite a few small crappie Sunday morning and I went out their Saturday night and caught one that was about 12" long. I put him back since I didn't have any more that size to keep company.
I was using some Bobby Garland stroll'rs in the mo-glo color and fishing in front of the spillway where the break in the current is. They were about 4' deep or so there.
Anyone can fish it as there is a road leading right down to it. A bunch of idiots dumped a bunch of trash on each side of that road too. I wonder if there is any fish in there. I have been meaning to get out there and try it but I've been way too busy.
Went to Lynn Lane Reservoir last night looking for sandies and all I could manage were 4 small crappie. I watched a guy hook a 20+ pound flathead catfish, only to break his rod and line right at the bank and lose it. He put up a good fight for 5+ minutes only to swim another day.
I've been catching those little crappie for the past week there at the spillway. I'm going out there probably Friday night to try to get a catfish to bite. The softball complex across from it provides a lot of light for night fishing.
I have caught lots of good crappie at keystone 4 weeks ago I limited out 3 times. some very large crappie this year. sigh no three pounders yet. Roofs in OKC are badly damaged and I am working non stop. So my future fishing is impeded for now. Holes in some of these roofs big enough to put my foot through.
Flyguy - The fish pictured appears to be in fair condition and starved. The fish is a LMB and not a spotted bass. The comments about all the small crappie tells me 2 things: 1) the crappie are probably white crappie and 2) they are stunted because of overpopulation and the lake is out of balance. This is typical when an unknowing person with good intent wants to create a fishery. Just my 2 cents. Best thing I have seen posted about this lake is a possible 20 pound flattie being caught. A few more of them in the lake and the crappie numbers might go down. Flatties like crappie:D
If you are talking about the crappie in the Lynn Lane resivoir we are have been discussing then I think some clarification is in order. The reservoir is not like a typical lake, its a feild that was bull dozed about 30 years ago to a flat clay surface, it has a burm completely around it with concrete banks... its a city drinking water facility holding area. (1BN Gallon Capacity)
It gets its water (and fish) directly from a series of 4-6' pipes from Oolagah lake. There is absolutely no structure in it (aside from the inlet spillway, and the facility that lets the water go into the plant) so I don't think the fish do much spawning or if they do its not very effective since there's not a lot of room for the fry to hide.
I did catch a 1lbish crappie there but most of my catches by the spillway have been 6-8".
The bass in that picture I caught from a local storm drainage pond (there are about 7 or so in Tulsa) and the reason we thought it was a spotted bass was due to its jaw hinging directly under it's eye socket. It's possible that it was starving though it was caught in a 1 acre pond. I did catch about a 1 1/2 lb one this morning in a different pond and it looked similar and had some dark discolorations on it. It was either spawning or eating the green sunfish that were spawning as I caught it in less than 1' of water near where I saw some spawning activity.
Here's an iphone picture of it.

Cricket George, the pond MS6 (where the bass in question was caught) is definitely overpopulated with crappie. Unfortunately, the flathead was in Lynn Lane. However, there are almost always people fishing the pond and keeping large numbers of crappie (small crappie). Do you think this itself could balance the ecosystem or are predatory fish necessary?
Holy hatch day!
I was out at the Lynn Lane reservoir tonight and the Mayflies were out swarming... and the fish were gorging. I noticed something different when I had my float get hit several times. The roads were just covered by them for a couple of miles. The other people were complaining that the fish were so preoccupied with the bugs that they wouldn't eat anything else. The only thing we could get to bite were turtles :(
