Untitled Document .... they've been there for awhile :o
... cp
They sure are ! I stopped to fish a main lake ledge on the northern end last summer and was in the middle of a half acre school of um surfacing like porposes. Sad Sad!
Yup.
Been here for a long time now. A buddy of mine snagged one that weighed over 40lbs while crappie fishing the year before last.
Do we know if it is having an impact on crappie populations?
I read an article that says they are good eating, many people prefer them to salmon if they don't know what it is, but people can't get past the name carp.
No they are not affecting crappie populations. There are a bunch in the lakes, and the conditions is only getting more serious, I fear. The only people putting a hurt on their population in the lakes is commercial anglers using gill nets, and then bow fishermen.
Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't those really the only two methods for removal by the average Joe?
I would pile them high with a bow but I don't normally see them in the areas where I bowfish. Not that they aren't there, they just seem to prefer deeper water unless it is moving. I understand that they are pretty fair targets below the dams, though.
I'm still suggesting a new sport be created. It combines trap or skeet with fishing. You get a guy in a boat with a shotgun and someone to run the boat. As you boat down the lake running your motor, your targets will soon begin flushing like coveys of quail in front of you. You start blasting them with the shotgun. There is no limit, and whoever bags the most wins! Of course there would have to be some serious safety considerations made to implement such a sport. But it would be a blast and would help thin em out. :D
Okay, this is a joke of course.
