i dont see a picture, but my first guess would have to be a "warmouth" they look like a cross and very tasty!!!
I agree with pete or it maybe a shellcracker... but don't see any pic?
Before everybody claims this fish is probably a warmouth I'm gonna' say that yes there can be crappie-bluegill hybrids. The pond at the house where I grew up had some in it. It seemed they were around for a about 3-4 years and then never caught anymore. These fish were definatley hybrids. The shape was kind of in between a crappie and bluegill and the colr was like both fish's colors overlapping with a crappie mouth. I've caught tons a of warmouths and these were not that.
If its from the piedmont, its most likely a warmouth.
Sorry about the lack of a picture. I was in a rush and thought it had attached but apparently it was bigger than the allowed size. Should work this time.
after reading some of the responses, it looks like it could be a warmouth. Do warmouths have big mouths like crappie? The fins and tail also seem to have the spots similar to those of crappie. Ya'll can see the pictures now so I am sure one of ya'll has the answer.
Looks like a shellcracker.
Doesnt have the red tip on the gill flaps..so isnt a redear aka shellquacker.
Looks like a warmouth to me,they hit & fight like a train & taste delicous as well.
thats all i needed to see. 100% warmouth.
Liek Pete said, warmouth.
I caught one when I was about 15 that was 14" and was over 2-1/2lbs from a pond in Richmond Co. I'm sure it was a state if not a world record. That fish was 2" thick. I wached it eat a 1/8 oz white rooter tail. Bet it was 1975 near the town of Hoffman NC. Man I'm old.
yep if it was a warmouth, you had a worlds record.....

Warmouth all the way my friend!... : )
Might be a green sunfish.
Looks like a Warmouth to me.
A warmouth.
Besides their distinctive spotted patterns, warmouths can be easily identified and distinguished from other panfish or sunfish by their proportionally large mouths (except green sunfish which also have a proportionally large mouth). Other panfish of the same weight will have mouths 2-3 times smaller than that of the warmouth, whose oral proportions are in line with those of largemouth/black bass. It is often stated that warmouths have the body of a bream (a small common sunfish) and the head of a bass, leading to rumors that it is a man-made crossbreed.
Warmouths can be very aggressive, and will often strike at lures and baits even after being released by anglers moments before.
old post but what about this one?
Looks like a Warmouth to me also.
Looks like a Warmouth.
From left to right those fish are : Shellcracker - Bluegill - Shellcracker - Crappie
I'm assuming you are questioning the hybridization of the Bluegill & Crappie, creating the other two fish (Redear Sunfish- aka Shellcracker). Nope ... Redear Sunfish are a species all their own.

So are warmouth=green sunfish and these are redear sunfish?
The picture tells it all. It is a warmouth. The lake I grew up near was full of them and the old men around then called the "mud chubs". They will eat almost anything but really like "top minnows". Flyer or Fly Perch have a smaller mouth and very long side fins.
I still don't think they're warmouth from the small mouth
You can see the faint red ear on the gill flap and it does not have the "war paint" type stripes across the cheek.I'm with CrappyPappy on this one it is a Redear (Shellcracker).
Sorry guys, but that looks nothing like a warmouth. You might want to look it up on ncwrc, a warmouth should have red eyes and be longer and not so tall. possibly a green sunfish ? Where i live in western nc we have what we call redeyes they are very simular to a warmouth but they are green instead of brownish looking. they live in cooler lakes and streams. i have caught a many of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would say warmouth to second pic show 3 def spines on anal fin
Look at the pictures of the shellcrackers. he jaw hinge does no go back to the eyes. The warmouth jaw hinge goes to the middle of the eye. I still vote warmouth. This fish has a big mouth.
No ... Warmouth, Green Sunfish, and Redear Sunfish are three different fish species.
Warmouth = Lepomis Gulosus
Green Sunfish = Lepomis Cyanellus
Redear Sunfish = Lepomis Microlophus
And all that means is they are different specie members of the same family of Sunfishes.

Warmouth.....hard hitters and they fight good too
