Kentucky Lake Report

I've fished hard for the past three days. My numbers have been 16, 11, and 9 keepers. I've had some good fish, five running 1lb 14oz. Fish are scattered with no real concentration in one spot. One here, one there. I've tried 2.5 ft to 22 feet. Caught fish in all depths but each day is getting worse. Today was tough with the rain and wind. All conditions (water temp and level) are really textbook for good fishing but I guess no one told the fish. I've caught mostly blacks and mostly males. The females are busting full of eggs but don't look to be ready to spawn. I caught lots of small fish Tuesday but that has petered out. I have notice the bite to be better in the afternoon. No one color of jig seems to be dominate either although orange and chartruse does have its moments. Anybody else doin' any good?

Hadn't had a chance to go. This weather isn't going to help any. I guess there is a lot of trash floating out there. I'm going saturday..Good luck..

I think they're just waiting for me to get there on April 6th before they turn on. We had such a tough time last year, the crappie want to make it up to us this year.

Nothing here. Have not been out since saturday. Plan to be on the water early tomorrow tho.

And next week looks to be killer!!!!!!!! Plans of big catches for next week! Best stock up on freezer bags!:D:D

I just can't seem to find 'em yet....

I've tried KY...Barkley...north... south...deep ...shallow...jigs...minnows...spider riggin...one poling....crankin...pulling jigs....casting....

4 trips with a total of 8 fish.....

I'm beginnin to think I've forgotten how to catch these finicky fish....:confused:

Man, I hope you're right about that!!! We'll be down there Tuesday to fish all week!!!!:):)

We just returned from Shawnee Bay, and had a lot of luck just one or two bays north of Shawnee. We were fishing the south side of the bays with minnows and a bobber. Fishing pretty close to the banks and off points. Did pretty well on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. The water in that particular bay on Wednesday evening was up to 55 degrees. I think that helped move them shallow. They started hitting in the evening around 5pm. Hope you find em'.

I have had to keep moving during bright daylight hours. Pick up one here and there. But before dark, say around 5:30pm up to sundown, the bite really picks up. I believe even with the rains the water is still pretty clear for the shallower crappie to be active. But when heavy cloudcover exists or once the angle of the sun eases light penetration into the cover, they come out and are HUNGRY! I use sidescan as do many and have notice that during bright light the crappie can be seen deep in the stakes and brush. When the light decreases you can see them move to the edge of cover and eventually out away from it several feet. Pretty cool! :)

Fished Blood River and found this exact thing to be true. It was hard to IMPOSSIBLE during the strong daylight hours. But once the evening low light conditions came.....BAM....we picked up 15! And they were hungry! Kind of cool that you experienced the same thing. Also when it got darker....they all came out of 2-9 foot of water.

Your right dkb. It is neat when you see other people experiencing the same thing you are. At least you know your not nuts Huh! LOL :)

It will be interesting to see how things change over the next week or two.

I ended up with 12 good black crappie ( biggest about 1 1/2#) and 20 GOOD yellows. I was casting jigs and minnows under a bobber on gravel points and banks. It seemed that the fish would turn on during the periods of the hardest rain. It was really nice to only have 2 boats get within 100 yards of me all day! The wind kept me off some of the places I really wanted to be. Seems the weather kept most folks at home. The first fish I caught was a drum about 10 pounds. They are a ball on ultra-light tackle!! I'm just glad I didn't have about 6 poles out on a spider-rig.

You know....when you are out there fishing and you see all sorts of people doing different things, you can get yourself so screwed up it ain't funny. You are always wondering......is this the right presentation? Always feel better when you get to the dock or see someone commenting on CDC that has either caught them the same way or NOT caught them the same way. Fishing is interesting like that. The hunt is sometimes frustrating but satisfying when it all comes together. Still am crazy though Old Guide! :)

Had good luck this past week

I fished Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon in the West Sandy portion of Big Sandy and caught fish (spider-rigging) everywhere I fished in depths of 8 to 15 ft of water. I kept limits (30 fish) on both Tuesday and Wednesday of nice fish fishing by myself. It rained and stormed on Thursday and I woke up Friday to high north winds and rolling waves. But the wind died down so that a partner and I fished Friday afternoon about
3 1/2 hrs and kept 27 nice fish. All the fish were caught on orange and chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. I talked with a few of my fishing buddies who fished further up Big Sandy in the Country Junction and New Hope areas and they caught high numbers of fish spider-rigging in 4 to 8 ft of water around old stump beds and really had nice fish.

At one time on Wednesday afternoon I could count 60 boats in the area of Big Sandy where I was fishing....and I could see most everybody catching fish. Of course, Big Sandy is a large area and a lot of people fish it this time of year, but I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's probably the "best" place on Kentucky Lake to catch crappie......bar none! In fact, I don't know a better place around, unless it would be Reelfoot Lake, which has become one of the most noted crappie lakes in the country.
