I have a motorguide 40# thrust foot control. My problem is if you turn it on high or med you can't control it with one foot it will flip one way you move it a little and it will jump the other. Is there any way of adjusting the cable or tighting the motor where it will be stiffer to turn. you look like a drunk trying to walk a straight line when going to the next dock. any help would be great Cub48
Some MG motors have 2 screws on the pedal where the steering cable goes in. First, make sure you don't have a bent shaft. That can cause all kinds of steering problems.
If you have a 3 blade prop try a 2 blade.

I have a motor guide 44 running through a Minn Kota Maximizer for long line trolling.
I had the same problem with the boat wanting to veer right or left.
I solved my problem with an unusual fix.
Went to Home Depot, bought a pipe clamp specifically designed to fix leaking pipes. These clamps have a rubber gasket attached permanently inside the clamp, which itself is designed to fit around a leaky pipe. It has two pipe clamps on it.
Buy one close to the size of the bushing right above where the shaft turns. Cut it on one side so it will go around the shaft. Tighten the clamps lightly at first. Put one clamp on the bushing and one on the shaft itself. Friction will cause the shaft to stay in place. You can tighten or loosen as needed to hold the position of the shaft as desired. Start loose as not to break anything.
I can point my boat toward an object on the far shore and my foot control trolling motor will not turn until I make it. Or I can run a straight line if desired. Solved my problem.

Thanks everyone I think I may have figured out whats going on with it. I think its running backwards and instead of pushing it's pulling. I am going to check another boat to make sure before I change the wiring. I noticed this Saturday while i was fishing but didn't think much of it. I read another thread it said the prop ran counter clockwise looking at it. Mine runs clockwise. Went out to the shop last night and checked. I add a thread last night about the problem but have not got any hits yet as the question is which way is the prop pointing when the pedal is all the way down in the back. I'll go by and look at one this afternoon and check it out. I'll check the prop rotation too. Just bought the boat a few months ago so I am workings all the bugs out as I go. Cub48, Did you get the problem fixed? I think I have the same issues with my trollling motor...no control.

Yes I did my motor was wired backwards. When the motor was running the prop was turning the wrong way. When it was in the water the prop was pointed the way the boat was going. Now the motor points the way the boat is going. You can control it on high now where before it took both feet. If i remember right mine was turning clock wise when it was wired wrong looking at the prop. It supposed to turn counter clock wise. Cub48
Dern. Glad you figured it out, cause I never would have suggested checking that. I was going to suggest looking for the steering tension adjustment. Don't know on MG, but on MK, it's on the foot pedal. A single screw. I'm sure it's on the MG foot pedal somewhere.
