Rod count in boats

What would you say to a maximum rod count in your boat while fishing?

Many lakes throughout the US have these rules, and it does not hamper their fishing success. Here is an example that I came up with while fishing these last few days:

1) 4 rods max per boat. This would include all cane style, manufactured, or homemade poles or rods.

2) If there are more than 4 people in a boat that are physically fishing, then 1 pole person would be allowed.


The problem I have is seeing a few of these boats with 8 rods hanging out the front, and then either 4-8 rods hanging out the back. That is 12-16 rods in a single boat! Truthfully, this is way over the top.

Now, for all the folks that spider rig, I know this would dampen your style, but how many times do you actually have 8 fish on at the same time?? Our modern times has adapted or adopted the attitude that "bigger is always better."

Here's some solid sportsmans discussion; what does it matter to you or anyone else if I have 500 poles hanging off my boat? The creel limits don't change if I have 1 pole out or 20.

Why the defensive?

I think by adding the extra hooks in the water, one would think that chances of catching a fish would be greatly increased. Compound that with different lure depths and colors, it stands to reason that more poles equal more opportunities. Notice that I didn't say they would catch more fish, they would just have more opps. To each his own.....I don't care if somebody's got 500 poles out just as long as they aren't keeping me from fishing. Every time I try to spider rig I get frustrated and end up going back to casting or pulling jigs anyway.

If Joe has 20 poles, lets make it to where he can only use 2 , that way I only have to buy 2 myself. Or better yet, lets take away 18 of Joe's poles and give them to 9 people who are too lazy to get off their useless butts and work for their own. As long as the guy using 20 poles is not keeping more than his limit, LEAVE IT ALONE!!

i`m with mrdux on this one,let the bioligist set creel limits and regulations not angry fisherman,people on here bash yo yos and me and my friends put out about a hundred once every year and run them every hour and sometimes we only have a few fish.next somebody will only want you to duck hunt with a .410 lol

BTW, I use 4 rods at a time or less. I just don't want any more government intervention in ANY matter.

What difference does it make how many rods I use. A limit is a limit no matter how many rods one uses.

This is a family friendly site and you are apparently unable to express your views without crudeness.

I have the ability to put out as many as 16 rods at 1 time but I never do. I usually spider rig with 8.

Spider rig'n is not my favorite type of fishing. I dearly love to vertical jig. That is my first love. I started spider rigging because my father is 76 and has terrible arthritis in his hands and shoulders which makes it hard for him to hold a rod all day and it's almost impossible for him to cast.

I also troll cranks, long line jigs, shoot docks and cast. I use what ever method the prevailing circumstances dictate will be the most efficent.

I agree, at times, you are "upping your odds " by spider rigging but with gas near $3.00 a gal., Lic fees going up, and less and less time to fish, I see nothing wrong with it as long as you keep what is legal. Mr. Rister said the same thing at out meeting in Feb of 09.

As a matter of fact, (and you can ask some of the people I fish around) I can usually smoke spider riggers by jumping brush and vertical jig'n. Ask Buffalo13or Bigbaddad, they'll tell ya that.

Don't take offence if some folks get a little upset at the mention of doing away with multipal rod fishing techniques. It's been here a long time and it is a style of fishing that many enjoy, including me and others that may suffer with the problems like my father has.

Also, if someone openly admits to using 4 or less rods/poles, then what is the big deal. mrdux's, I just don't understand the hostility that you protrayed.

I use 6 when I'm by myself but that's just because I don't have 2 more long poles to fill out my other 2 rod holders. :D

I have to say, I don't understand the intention of the original post. That's like telling everyone that they are cheating if they shoot anything but a single shot shotgun, longbow or flintlock rifle.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on how "they" think the various pursuits should be conducted but it's a personal decision that should not be forced on everyone else just because they don't care for it.

Well bandchaser, that went over like a turd in a punch bowl. Don't take it personally. Fisherman are just very defensive of their methods and when someone suggest changing it, especially by law, it can get a little dicey. Its like telling gun owners (of which I am one) what they can and cannot own. The whole "Pry my dead fingers from around my spider rig" thing. Be careful what your fishin for on your threads, you might not like what you catch. I understand what you where going for but like someone said, it has been beat to death.

I use 12 poles while long line trolling. Six up front with me and six in the back if I got someone with me and if anyone can explain how I can add another 12 poles, I will do it. I simply ran out of money and room on the boat.

KDFWR says there's no pole limit on KY waters .... end of story. Size limits & creel limits rule the road, and are adjusted as necessity warrants. KDFWR may be a "government" organization ... but, we pay their bills. Stands to reason that they would want us to be able to catch a legal limit ... since that would insure that they get repeat licensees, & new ones ... keeping the cash flow going. If they thought a pole limit was necessary, they'd implement one.

Remember ... one man's junk, is another man's treasure ;) (defined in fishing terms - one man's fishing method, is [or may be] another man's nightmare)

On a personal note : I don't care how you fish, or how many fishing poles you use, or what size/kind of boat you fish out of .... as long as you're legal. I "prefer" to use one pole at a time ... but, I'm not a purist in that regard, because I WILL use more than one - if the situation calls for it. ;)

The reality is that the governments place in regulation of sport fisheries is very important. Most people don't realize how important. Most people don't realize the dollars that go into managing sport fish and decision making that go toward improving fishing for the folks that are out there on the water. You think that all government is bad, then keep on and take away the guys that fight for your ability to catch fish every day and see where it gets you.

The reality is that fishing with more poles is a more efficient way of catching fish. The limit is still 20, but with one pole it may take me 10 hours to catch my fish while the guy with 8 poles could be done in much less time.

And then he is off the water making more room for everyone else. If I could control/afford 20 poles out I would do it. I prefer casting a crappie slider though. Just want to stink a skillet.

I'd agree with most, the creel limits in place should be what is emphasized, not the number of rod's a person uses. Personally, when I spider rig by myself, I used six poles. If someone is up front with me, we each fish four poles. Pulling jigs or cranks I fish four out of the front with someone pulling four out of the back. Really not any different than a bank fisherman who uses four rods to fish with.

I catch some fish, but vary rarely approach a two person limit. Don't want to clean that many anyway. I still fish the TN side of Kentucky lake mostly, if I boat one person's limit on a days trip, I'm more than satisfied. I've also gone to keeping fish 11" or better once the bite gets good. Just my personal imposed regulations.

To each his own, that's what makes our Country so great.

The crappie population is probably best managed with a creel limit, rather than a method restriction. The creel limit is the same for all, regardless how many poles you use. However, in 2003 as part of a crappie study at KY Lake, we evaluate anglers fishing for crappie, their method and harvest. Of the crappie anglers on KY Lake that were interviewed, 23% fished with 3 or more poles (spider rigging), 15% casted the shoreline, and 62% used only 1 or 2 poles. Of the anglers that used 3 or more poles, they caught 40% of the crappie that were harvested that year. Anglers that casted the shoreline, caught 17% of the harvested crappie. While anglers fishing with 1 or 2 poles harvested the remaining 44% of the crappie. First these numbers would imply that there were almost three times the anglers fishing 1 or 2 poles. And, the harvest by these anglers was more than the anglers fishing with 3 or more poles. But the true questions is "efficiency" of the different methods. The anglers fishing 3 or more poles caught 3.48 harvestable size crappie per angler, while the anglers using only 1 or 2 poles caught 1.44 harvestable size crappie per anglers. So the efficiency is almost 2.5 times greater for spider rigged anglers.

We probably all knew that spider rigging is more effective. But, there is an art to spider rigging to make it effective.

The bottom line, if you catch your limit in 1 hour with 18 poles, or 9 hours with 2 poles, the limit is still the same for all. The fact is though most anglers will give up before they fish a full nine hours, making the odds of the first angler getting his limit.

The issue at hand at KY and Barkley lakes is a few poor year classes. We reduce the limit to 20 to help out the population. The "20" was a compromise to both manage the fishery and keep anglers fishing. In 2003, 48% of the crappie anglers agreed with a 20 fish limit, 37% agreed with a 15 crappie limit, it was down to 4% for a 10 fish limit. If we had truely set a creel limit to positively affect overharest during this depression, then the limit would have been closer to 5 fish. But, how many anglers would have complained? How much tourism would have been loss? So it was a compromise, one with which you all will have to make for the next few years, until we have seen a few good spawns. The compromise on your part is to help out, and not keep as many crappie as you can catch. Self impose a lower creel limit and/or a high size limit for your boat. It is just fishing, relax and injoy it. Use photos to brag on your catch, not livewells full or crappie or freezers full of fish. Put a few back to spawn.

You could raise the price of NR fishing licenses on KY and Barkley lakes by $5-$10 and largely pay for your restocking efforts.

As to the pole limit, Lake Weiss has a limit of 3 per person in the water at one time. May help, but I have not seen any data on the effect this has had on the population. I like the lake, but when making my schedule, if I had to chose between a lake that has size and creel limits or a lake that has size, creel and rod quantity, 90% of the time I will chose the first lake.

I can' t see where this is a problem at KY lake, so the only the only adise that I have been given over my 71 years is, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it."

Guess you can say I had to put my two cents in also, so you got it. I want to fish what ever amount of poles that I want to. There are enough government regulations. Look at salt water fishing. It would seem that non fishermen of the sport are making the rules. Just like PETA.:eek::eek:

Personaly I think I should be allowed to have as many rods in my boat as I please. I like to FISH! Every time I am on the lake I have 3 rods set up for crappie and gills, 1 for catfish and 6 for bass. Now obviously I dont have all these in the water at the same time, but I like to be able to get in the rod box and grab what is working the best.

The GREAT STATE OF KENTUCKY has decided that a creel/size limit is best for KY/Barkley and I agree. I rarely bring home a limit of crappie or redear (I never keep bass). I just bring home enough each time(when I can catch them) to feed me, my wife and our son.

If you only want to have four rods in your boat more power to you. If you want 100 rods in your boat more power to you. I feel that if you want to ease some of the pressure on our local fisheries raise the NR fees. I know this is a big money and tourism issue but if our lakes and rivers are so much better than the theirs THEY WILL PAY MORE TO FISH HERE!!!!

The vibe from the Alabama folks that I got was that the rod limit was a way to reduce crowding on the lake and not so much a biological based restriction to improve the fishery.

:eek: Don't say that out loud! It's already $50. I spent $200 on licenses for the family last year for two trips to KY Lake.

MAKE IT STOP!

The anger comes from our rights being taken away more and more everyday. I thought all fishing and hunting forums were on the right side of the internet not the far left.

I don't want unnecessary regulation, but there's a time and place for everything. I don't think regulating rod # is remotely necessary, by the way.

Non-resident license for the whole year is $50. I just bought two....100 bucks

I did not start this as a political thread, but as a discussion. It has turned more into a bashing of me and others.

I am a fanatic outdoorsman where I bowhunt, duck hunt, turkey hunt, and of course Crappie Hunt! The entire family is involved right down the wife duck hunting right along beside me, getting up at 3am and chasing ducks!

Let's all not judge others by what has been said, and allow all of us to get to know each other and out wit the elusive crappie on our favorite waters!

It's gone beyond the original question. And, yes, it is a touchy subject for some, & no big deal for others. Everyone's opinion counts, but let's not forget that we agree to disagree ... and try & keep it civil. Political sways are going to be present in most any discussion ... but, let's not let our political feelings overrun the overall idea that's presented.
