I have a warning on new powder paint times

Well guys I have never had a problem with my paint after the cure until now. I have even extended it out to 12 minutes to give the little oven time to get thing hot. However it's not enough as I have had several little things that got my attention. First was when tying some of my little hair jigs, if I have a little hair sticking out from under the thread I will cut it with a double edge razor as they are best for cutting hair period. Well the other night I was cutting some and the paint actually chipped a tiny bit which gave me pause. The today the little jig I was using (same one as Tuesday) the tip of the head showed some paint chipped off and that should never happen.

So as of this moment I am going back to 15 minutes on all the paint they say can be cured in 10 minutes as this has always done well for my jigs. SO this is my warning to you that if you follow the 10 minute thing they sent me it may not be the best it can be. I will add a note to the sticky soon to cover this, but wanted to tell you guys now.

Now I am not a happy camper and plan on speaking with them soon.

I always did 20 minutes I figured 5 more minutes wont kill me and never had a problem.

Yeah, 20 min. minimum here... usually 30 for the final cure, no need to rush things eh?!

Well the only color I do for 20 minutes is White and at lower temp than most. I try to get as close to 392 as I can for that 15 minutes and they did tell me the longer they are in the oven the darker the paint will be.

Have had lots tell me they never even scratch the heads on the ones I do for 15 at 392.

Isnt it possible that you have perhaps some bad power or possibly human error was involved in the results. Guess what I am saying is have you tried doing more heads from the paint that you are having problems with at the 10 minute mark and some at the 15 minute mark to see if there is actually a problem and if so did baking them for 15 minutes actually fix the problem.

Or is all this based off a couple of two jigs that you noticed this problem with, i am just curious as to what was done to determine that the 10 minute time is false information or not. There are allot of things to take into consideration that may have cause the results that you saw on from what I gather two jigs. That would be 2 jigs out of how many jigs where painted and done according to the method you where using. Not trying to knock your warning or anything for that is good information and brings it to everyone's attention but i think there are more facts needed before you come out and say that something doesn't work. Meaning that just because it doesn't work for you does not actually mean that it does not work for someone else, for I have had not one problem using the 10 minute mark perhaps I am just the lucky one but I really dont believe that for I have less experience than most in here at painting jigs.

That is the only reason I am saying we need more information to determine if something is not working and if it is not working why is it not working. What I find in most of my blunders is that human error was the main cause of the problem. Either i missed a step some where along the line which resulted in the poor results or I thought I did all the steps correct but in actuality when going back over it, I discovered i did something just a little different than what i was doing prior to the problem.

Anyway thanks for the heads up and by the way what color paint where you having problems with.

This is the same paint I have been using for several years and never a problem at all. So don't think it's the paint. It didn't come from a different jar or container. I just think it needs the 15 minutes I have used for all this time. Maybe they are making their paint different and new stuff works different, but I don't think so, but do plan on asking them.

Also who has the best Chart I need to order a pound Tomorrow. I have some jigs to paint for Thursday and not of Chart.

I've worked with epoxies for years in my day job (aerospace). Usually you can get full cure by either extending the cure time or upping the cure temp but not necessarily both at the same time. Most of what I deal with is driven by engineering specifications but within those specifications there is usually a preferred cure and and an alternate cure. One is usually at room temp (won't apply here obviously) and takes quite awhile and then there is an accelerated cure which calls for some temp above ambient and a much shorter time.

I said all this to make the point that within certain parameters there is more than one way to get the same result. One of the axioms in my business is that it's hard to over cure at a given temp but an under cure will get you killed....

If Pro-Tec has the color I usually get that, but it's not cheap. They are the ones I got the cure time and temps from.

One thing to consider is toaster ovens probably don't hold heat too good, and probably isn't too accurate of a temperature.

I do 20 minutes on everything and let them sit in the oven til cool to the touch.

toaster ovens can reach much higher temps near the heat coils before it reaches the thermostat. Most are on or off. while on they put out a lot of heat and that can result in inconsistent curing

Yeah, I use a toaster oven and even though I use an oven thermometer I still don't trust it too much. I cure everything at 375* for at least 20 min.

I've had more problems with temps being too high than a little low... but each to their own, and if your method works for you... that's all that really matters!

I cure mine for 20min and have no problems...
