Crappie fisher, I would probably say 90% of my fishing trips as well as hunting is within 40 mi. of home. A couple of times a year might take a trip a little farther. One of my favorite lakes is a 900 acre oxbow that is about 2 hrs away. We go over there two or three times a year for the weekend a try to load up on the big slabs. Just so much going on with the kids, its hard to get away for more than a few hours most of the time. But I'm lucky to have pretty good fishing right here close.
Mark Twain-- 110 mls. Truman-- 155mls. and the list gets goes on, mainly these I fish the most.
Normally 30-60 min but my favorite lake is 2½ hour drive.
Hey 3Girls, you must be fishing Midway? They do have some hog headed crappie there. I fish it regularly.

I am very fortunate, I live right between two lakes, Cherokee and Douglas. 30 minutes to either one.
I always fish Douglas though simply because I know that lake. Guess I need to find a new best friend to show me the hotspots on Cherokee.
about 15 min I am on either the the lake section of Watts Bar or the river section of Chickamuga lake.
I'm talking round trip here, most of the time I got by with a 70-90 mile
trip, but here lately, been goin as far as 180 - heck of a time to start that
with fuel prices what they are :)
hmmmm, I live 5 minutes form the TN river. Pickwick and WIlson are witin 10 minutes. Wheeler is 30 minutes, and my 2 favorite BCDA lake impoundments are 40 minutes. I am very lucky.
Lakes Hartwell and Greenwood are about an hour drive for me. Going to Lake Russell, my favorite is about 1 and 1/2 hours. Driving to Clarks Hill is going to take close to 2 hours. The Santee Cooper lakes are about 3 hours away and with the price of gas these days I don't get there too ofton.
I recently got hooked on a water shed lake about 15 minutes from the house. It is open sunup to sundown and is restricted to 16 foot or less boats with 10 HP or less motors. I just bought a 14 ft flat bottom with a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke so I can fish this lake. It is 546 acres and the lake record crappie is 4 Lb. 2 Oz. May have to get over there about Friday.
Good question.
Merry Christmas All
The area where I live is called the Diamond Lakes Region. Partly because we have several deep clear reservoirs but primarily because if you drew a line from the center of the four biggest lakes it would form a diamond shape. I live in the middle of the "diamond". Twenty minutes to the east to 7,000 acre Lake Hamilton, thirty-five minutes to the west to 7,000-acre Lake Greeson, 20 minutes to the north to 50,000-acre Lake Ouachita and twenty minutes to the south to 15,000-acre Lake DeGray. I only guide on Greeson and Hamilton but if either of those lakes quit producing for me I could guide on the other two once I established some honey holes.
New to the site and love it.
I live 3 minutes from Watts Bar on the Emory River, but love to go to other lakes.
even though I live in Central KY, and surrounded by lakes, they're scattered around the state. The closest lake, that I've ever fished for Crappie, is 45mins away. Herrington Lake is a DEEP, former 3star whitewater river, dammed in the 50's (when I say deep, I mean it has 200+ ft water in some places). My main local Crappie lake, Taylorsville Lake, is 1.5hrs away ...(the other lakes I have Crappie fished - Cave Run Lake is 1.5hrs away ... Green River Lake is 2hrs away ... KY/Barkley Lakes are 5hrs away ... Watts Bar Lake is 4hrs away ... Weiss Lake is 6hrs away) ......... cp
I live on Lake Hamilton, so I drive zero miles. But I also guide on Lake Greeson, which is about 45 minutes from the condo. Lake Ouachita is not far, maybe 20 minutes. But then again the home base and family is on Northeast Arkansas 3.5 hours away. Bottomline, where there is good fishing and good friends, there's where I wish to spend my remaining days.
To get crappie(8 to 10 inches) I have to go 6 to 20 miles..If I want
to get a real crappie I have to come to your place
500 miles..When you going to be home. I might have
to make a pit stop...
It seams to be alot of people in the same boat as me I wished I lived on a lake.I hate having to drive 45 mins to fish. You guys that live on the water are very lucky.
work 2nd. shift(3-11) fish local lakes during week 20-35 miles away. fish buggs island (VA) on weekends and vac. 70 miles away. i could not keep a job if i lived closer to buggs!!!
im 10 minutes from Big Creek, Sailorville and the Des Moines river. an hour from Rathbun and Red Rock. all in central Iowa.
I am lucky. I can launch at three different Lakes in 15 minutes. Another lake is 20 minutes. Drive 30-50 more minutes to three other big lakes. these are all good fisheries on rivers. 100' depths on some of them. That makes 7 lakes just over an hour or less from my home. When I thought about this it makes me realize I live in a great place for a crappie fisherman.
sounds like most of you are pretty lucky.the nearest good lake is 1.5 hrs and the the lakes i like to fish are all at least 2.5 hrsfrom here.there is a small lake about 20 min from my house but it is overrun with jetskis and overstocked with striper which ruins it for crappie fishin.
About 10 minutes to Kentucky Lake for me.
I can be at 3 different lakes within a half hour. Lake Mattoon, Lake Paradise and my main one, Lake Shelbyville. About six lakes within an hour. Newton, Mill Creek, Lake Sara.
I fish 6-8 different lakes or rivers regular around the house. The closest is 40 minutes and the furthest is around 2 hours. There are 4 or 5 others that I go to about once a year within 1 1/2hours.
I live 10 minutes from Leesville lake(very few people fish it for crappie) 30 min. from smith mountain 1:45 min. from Buggs Island and go there quite often.
http://tinypic.com/iw7ja1.jpg 1 minute... I live on pearl...
LOL @ SSTupperware! Must be just terrible.
I live 50 minutes from the dam at Grand Lake, 40 minutes from Markem Ferry, 45 minutes from Fort Gibson, 25 minutes from Skiatook, and My Home lake, Oologah, is about 4 miles from my house to one of the main boat ramps. Oologah has over 107,000 surface acres. It also has some Monster Crappie. I have no reason to go anywhere else other than to join a friend elsewhere.
Fishinpox, that lake I eluded to is Old Town, east of Helena. Where is Midway?
David, it's great aint it?
I live 1/2 mile from Anderson Creek in East Lauderdale.
1 mile to Elk River ramp on 72. 2 miles to another one on Elk River near the mouth.
About 3 miles to Elk River at Sportsman Park.
4 miles to First Creek.
6 miles to Second Creek.
It's easier to drive to the boat ramp nearest my fishin holes than it is to go by boat.
Hey there westtx, I grew up in Lubbock, went to Frenship High (1983). Anyway, the last time I was there Alan Henry didn't even exist. Did some catfishing at Buffalo, that's about it. But I bet the way I crappie fish here in Arkansas in deep, clear water over and in brushpiles would work great on Alan Henry's offshoots and deep ledges. That's what I imagine it to be since they just flooded a canyon. Keep in touch and if I ever get crazy enough to return to the desert, let's go fishing.Quote:

I’m about a ½ hour from Lake Ozark and 1 hour from Truman. I normally fish Truman, to many big boats and jet skis on Ozark. I know Truman a lot better, but aiming on learning Ozark this winter and early spring, before the big boats start in.
A fishing buddy, has it made he lives about a mile from a boat ramp on Truman.
The Tn river is 13 miles:D
Pickwick dam is 24 miles:D
