Is it possible to get the output of a depthfinder/GPS routed to a laptop computer? The reason I ask is because of the small screen size of most depthfinders. It would be nice to able to plug the depthfinder into a laptop for a larger screen size.

Are you talking about a live feed or something that can be viewed later on the laptop?
Is this for the sonar data or is this just the depth and position that you want?
If not they should. That is a great idea.

I would like to hook the laptop up in the boat to look at live. Depth and GPS ocation on a lake map. Mainly just to have a larger screen.
I can't afford the large 10 inch screen depthfinders.
For live depth and coordinate information you can use the NMEA Output from our units to your laptop:

We don't stream the raw sonar data but we do have a Video Output on the larger 800, 900 and 1100 series units.
Thanks Greg!!!!! That's what I'm looking for.
Well you could use Oziexplorer for the moving map software and if nothing else print and scan maps from Mapsource to use as the map image in Ozi.
TnT,
What do you mean by:
“I guess my 798 is just 2 numbers away from being able to do that ” ?
Any of our Sonar + GPS units have this capability.
what about the 385ci?

In your post, you mentioned the 800, 900 and 1100 series, but not the 700...So I just thought the lower end SI unit may not have those capabilities.....Oh crap....There I go thinking again:eek:
Thx for the info Greg.
Hmm, without listing every model number separately it may just be easier to say that if a unit has a GPS input (internal or external) and has the NMEA Output menu than it will work. So that would include the 798 and the 385ci units. Remember that to see the NMEA Output menu the “User Mode” menu will have to be set to the “Advanced” setting. The NMEA Output menu is down near the bottom of the Setup menu tab.
Seems to me something is missing here. I have been using that serial port for many years to communicate with various telephone equipment and I have always had to set up the RS-232 protocol and have a program on the laptop to use it. How is that handled Greg?
My concern would be the potential loss of a laptop. Unless you have one that is waterproof, any number of thins can happen to get water in the laptop and fry the thing!
I use a laptop. I can run oziexplorer or Gasrmin Mapsource. I could input from a HB video out port and use this as a display if I had HB video out..
Just waiting on a price break on HB video out unit. I won't pay full boat price for one stinking feature.
I been using laptop and PDA since KY Hydrographyx came out for Big Sandy.
Really neat stuff.
I don't really need sidescan. I just like fooling with the stuff. Neat chit.
IBNFSHN,
There are some programs that can take the live NMEA feed and map maps or just log the data. The easiest would be to use Hyperterminal to log the data.
The guys on this board could probably help you out with the program side of things:
