PM BUCKET (0) MOUTH I bet he can tell you.
Ain't there a boat ramp or place where people fish off the bank at the johnson hole? I have heard people talk about it but I have never been any where down south fork
HSSS, The johnson HOle is the last part of the river that is accessable by boat when the lake is at the level it is now. If you are going up by boat, when you leave the lake area (you will be able to tell by the lay of the land)keep to the left side of the lake area and this will take you up the south fork prong of the river. Be cautious and dont try to run fast here as there will obstacles to look out for. The shoal at the lower end of the Johnson hole is navigitable but you really have to pay attention. Keep to the left side and go slow!!! When you get to the upper end of the JH the shoal will be shallow and you will not be able to pass. Hope this helps, if not let me know and will try to answer any other questions you have...
Is this the area to Walleye fish this time of year and if so where would one put in to access?
I usually put in at Choctaw and it is about a 10 minute run up the South Fork to get to Johnson Hole. It is a good walleye spot during the spawning run, but right now things are way behind schedule because of the cold. Warm weather this week may get the fish moving though. I highly recommend reading Tommy Zinda's reports on Greers. Greer's Ferry, Arkansas, Fishing Guide Reports & Conditions
He puts out frequent detailed reports on the lake
Good luck if you go up there this weekend. That is where I will be.
Are there other ares to walleye fish or is this the spot for the run?
South Fork, Middle Fork, and Devil's Fork are the major tributaries where there are big walleye runs. I have only fished South, mostly because it is close to my house. I have heard that some smaller tributaries also have walleye in the spring, places like Peter Creek. There is also a lake strain of walleye that spawn in the main lake areas, often near islands, but I have not had much luck with them. The trick in early spring is to look for water between 47-52F. Also keep in mind that after the spawn they will slowly work their way back down the main tributaries. I actually catch more walleye in April and May when they tend to be very aggressive feeders, especially if you have some wind blowing. But the spawning run seems to be the best time to have a shot at large fish. I can't figure out where the big ones are the rest of the year. If anybody wants to give me some advice on that, it would be greatly appreciated :D
Are there boat ramps up the rivers and if so where. I run an 18x56 john with 115 etec jet and long runs in the open water are pretty hard to do. Thanks for the info it has been a lot of help.
There is infact a nice launch ramp at the Johnson Hole. The Corp put it in a couple years ago. I cannot remember the number of the hwy that you turn off of hwy65 to access but I think it is 254. It will be the first road to the left after you go through the stop light at wall mart. After going a ways, the road will Y and you have to take the left fork. This is a black top ramp so you should not have any trouble launching and there is parking area also.
Are ya'll talking about the spot back in there by the boy scout place?
Any reports on water temps up the S. Fork with the last couple days of warm weather. By the end of this weekend we should get a nice warmup. The nighttime temps are not going down too far which will allow for a rapid increase in water temp (maybe). Maybe that will finally get the fish moving.
That looked like a place that might be better suited for my scamp than my boat. Only been up there during deer season, never fished it. Have a buddy that has caught some pretty good mess' of walleye up there. He lives up on Wolverton there close to you I am guessing.
Thursday the main lake at the Narrows was 41* to 43*, up Middle Fork just past the island there were a few pockets, on the north banks, that had 46* and 47* water.
Directions to Johnson Hole: From jct. US-65 & SR-95 [N35 33 41.97, W92 27 01.57] in Clinton (just south of Wal-Mart),
go Easterly on SR-95 1.6 miles to Barrens Community Rd. [N35 33 08.71, W92 25 36.33].
go Left (East) on Barrens Community Rd. 2.6 miles to boat ramp [N35 34 57.31, W92 25 40.62] (just past the Youth Camp on the Left).
Warning! Approximately 400 feet downstream from the ramp there is a shallow rocky bottom. Kind-of keep to the right and go slow. Pay attention to the depth finder, because as soon as you leave the Hole the rocks will creep up on you, suddenly.
You can go up stream all the way until you see a fork in the river (main river goes to the right), that's as far as you can go.
Arkansas Fish and Game has Johnson Hole black marked for high Mercury content.
I did fish Greers Ferry today around Choctaw from 10 AM 'till 2 PM with jigs.
Not even a bite!
Went down to Lake Conway at Gold Creek and fished for couple hours with gigs. One keeper and one drum. That's it. Everyone else was doing just as "good".
I was told morning was better, but nothing hot.
Heard a second hand story about a feller catching 50 white bass at Lake Maumele in the morning, within couple hours.
Would yall recommend putting in at Johnsons Hole or somewhere else for fishing the South Fork? I will be there around 7:00 in the morning and will post a report. Thanks
The water was still between 42 and 45 and I will blame that for the big Goose Egg today.
