Opinion on this style
http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...9/DSC00307.jpg
Trying something new with this head. Glue strip of rabbit on top and bottom edges. Lashed the whole thing together floss and coated with fly head finish.
Glued the two at the end with Tear Mender so that it remains flexible.
Colors not the best right now. Just trying for action and body shape. Can't make up my mind if I like or not. What say you all ?

looks like that dog will hunt....i like them personally

Just personally I don't think I would tie it going that far up the head. Of course maybe you don't have enough hook shank with that head style??? Just not use to that head so don't know much.
I never tie anything on the heads, but I don't have any heads like that either so again just not so sure. I think personally I like more hook shank to head ratio, but maybe looking at it tied I am thinking the head leaves very little shank to tie on.
I hope I am saying this right so it's as I mean it. I guess the main overall thing I am saying is I like more room to tie than that head/hook combo gives. Don't know how heavy that head is, but it looks huge.
I like the idea, but just not on that head I guess.

I think that bluegill color or even baby crappie or perch would be killer.I like it.
-
Skip- your right not much room to tie on hook. That jig is not as big as it looks #4 hook and probably 1/16th of an inch thick. Feel s just perfect on my jig rod not too heavy not to light.
Drawbacks include using lot of thread beause of wide surface area. What I am trying to do is make some in the profile of baby bluegill ,crappie and shad. Crappie and bluegill eat each others young with a vengance. I have cleaned slab crappies with all kind of bluegills stuffed in thier stomachs.
I can't seem to get the profile just right tying on the hook. No tyer who sells their jigs would want to tie this too much time.
Going to make up a couple dozen to try this year and will let all know results.

You might want to try “manipulating” your lead head – something similar to what I did for the Shad Swap (don’t remember if you were in that one) and what ifish does for his jigs.
I use a small bench mount vise with a cheater bar. Put the jig in the vise nose up - where your tie ended - even with the top of the jaws. Squeeze the jaws close about a ¼ turn flattening the jig that would be covered with thread. Take the jig out and trim or file a taper the flattened portion so you can wrap over it. You will still keep the profile you are trying to get with out changing the balance or taking off too much weight.
These jigs are from a Do-it Minnow mold and were manipulated.

Can't really see the thin profile here but it is easy to wrap up and down the taper and still maintain a flatter profile.

If Mustad makes a 37188 in a #8 - you might want to try that hook in your mold - wider gap and looks a little longer.
Think you have some real potential with that style. Good luck on your new jig….

Led thanks for the tip!!!! I'll have to give some of those a try.
I checked capt hooks for that 37188 size 8 hook, and all the smallest they show is a 6

I like these bluegill/sunfish alot. You definitely are limited with the shorter shank. What I like to do is let the head itself be the whole body so all you need to tie is the tail. That being said I like your jig. Like the colors you painted the thread too.
-
My only real attempt at a sort of bluegill is my sunfish jig and it's mostly bucktail (which I don't much like for my personal fishing) and I just don't know what results people that got this one have had. Just didn't hear back as I don't most of the time. I could have added some other colors, but heck I don't even like to tie it, LOL!
This is on a 1/16 with #4 hook I think.
Here it is... http://thumpitjigs.com/images/Captur...1-15_00002.JPG
It was also a good way to use some small guinea feathers I had and have some chart too, but don't dare make one for the site now.
