Is this any different that the stuff in sewing department at Wal-Mart? :)

There is a difference in threads. I use mostly a 210 flat waxed thread for most my tying needs.
JJ
yes jiggin joe is right danville 210 flat waxed is the norm i think
Great thanks. I just ordered a few colors.
You will be happy with that choice. It is my thread of choice unless they don't make a color I need then my next choice is 140 Denier Ultra thread. Good stuff too.

I use the ultra thread in 70 and 140,mostly. Some think the 70 ultra is to thin and breaks too easy.About the only way I break it is if I nick it on the barb of the hook. If you are new to tying you'd be better off going with the 140 or 210.Lot's of good stuff out there.
210 all the way.. able to get the jig to pull together real tight
right when you need an answer here it is....tied my first jigs by hand last night...no bobbin no whip finisher no hackle plier...I learned an important lesson...all these tools were created for a reason.
I pretty much use whatever I can find in the color I want - craft stores, sewing shops, wally world - I'm not too picky. Strong metallic color thread can be tough to find. If you are tying bucktail or craft fur jigs, ignore what I just said and use the 210, make things much tighter. :)
Revtoby, give it a year and your necesities (sp?) will change..... I gave up on my finisher and do all knots by hand now. Also don't use hackle pliers all that much, I tend to break the feather alot using the pliers. The bobbin... yeah, you need that!!!!! Several of them!
If I'm tying a jig with a thread body, I use mostly 210, but 140 will do if I can't get the color in 210. I used 70 on chenille jigs and put sally hanson on all the ties when finished. The 70 hides better with the chenille and is strong enough for my heavy hand, though I do break it occasionally. Too many colors to choose from.
I posted an article on my blog, last November, that might be helpful to you.
Favorite Threads
Let me add that I prefer Ultra Thread 70 for collared jigs of 1/16 of an ounce or less. One-forty is my favorite for anything larger, regardless if collared.
Coats makes a strong 60/40 Nylon/Polyester metallic thread. The colors are promising. Here's a photo of some bass jigs I tied recently where both metallic and machine embroidery thread (trilobal polyester) are used.

I use a bit of 210 but these jigs are all tied with U.T.C. 140 deneir flat waxed red
thread. I tried a spool of 140 Danville in red and seemed to have a little less strength. ole giller
Giller -:eek::eek: You've been BUSY!!!!!! I used to think I make alot of jigs & flies........... not no more!
I use synthetic craft fur almost exclusively for my crappie jigs. So, I use danville 210 flat waxed thread. I can pull it real tight without breakin the thread.
Everyone thanks for your input. This website and its members are great! Many thanks!
Guess I am really old School. I use eather Danville or Gudebrod A in red. I like the Gudebrod in a 1 oz. Spool and a large bobbin I can tie a ton of jigs with a 1 oz. spool. Red is my favorite color.
Redman
Cheapest place to find 210 flat waxed????
