Bugman, go to your local auto dealership and ask them if they will give you a bucket/container of discarded wheel weights. Most dealerships throw them away (you can't reuse) if you don't have any luck, pm me and I'll bring you some to camp. They are REAL close to pure:)
try plumbers lead.
I have poured a lot of lead by melting down tire weights and it seemed pretty soft. There isn't a whole lot of slag that comes off when you melt it.
Yup, wheel weights should be just fine for jig heads. Just don't make bullets out of it.
bugman don't know where you are at call Fin&Feather in springfield they are on south campbell. neat shop and good people. Hope this helps.
Like I said, anybody wants some let me know and I'll bring them to camp:)
I've tried some lead that wasn't very pure and it didn't work very well so i actually read the instructions that came with my melter and it said tire weights weren't very pure and they didn't reccomend using it thats why i was looking for other types of lead,i'll try a few and if they work i'll take you up on your offer Jack........thanks for the help fellas.
How Much U Want???may Just Know Of Some,,will Have To Check
Mr. CN just uses a Coleman campstove and a cast-iron skillet (small) to melt the lead and he only uses tire weights. Once in awhile he has to skim off some "stuff", but other than that he has really good luck with the tire weights and has used those for 25+ years for all his weights and anchors.
Wheel weights are really not pure lead - they contain tin (and maybe antimony?) to make them harder.
You can try Midway in Columbia. They have a number of different lead formulations (Lead+tin+antimony) and I think they may even have fairly pure lead.
You can also tru Rogers in Liberty. They have lead ingots that I have used and they are pretty good.
The other alternative is to melt the weights as CN suggests. After skimming off the slag you can then pour your own ingots using an ingot mold.

For another source try EBAY and type in lead. Got mine there and it was pure soft lead and was cheaper than the local store.
the trick to tire wieghts is to melt it in a a scap pot, skim the floating stuff off and dip the lead out but don't touch the bottom. You might have to use a couple of pots but your lead will be good to go.
Mo is on the spot with this, wheel weights will work fine with spinnerbaits or any large cavity. Use the soft with small jigs. Check your phone book for it locally.
