Pushing

Congrats to all who fished Crappiemasters yesterday on Talquin. I fished for about three hours and will say the conditions were PURE RAW to say the least. Now is pushing the way to fish those conditions because pulling wasn't getting it.I caught 10 dinks and one 13 in. fish all in one semi protected hole. My question is since I'am the laziest fisherman on Talquin sould I start pushing or just pull. I don't want to put any more effort in than is worth it..... Again anyone that fished yesterday can eat hush puppies with me anytime.... Good showing Jamie and your picture wasn't bad either....

i wonder the same thing.i fish sinclair mostly and talquin 3 or 4 times. i think i have seen someone pushing one time. it makes since to really get slow when they are not bieng aggressive. it seems like you read other states boards and a lot of them push, makes me wonder why i dont see it more here. which they maybe more i dont see though. i think i would like to learn but with my boat two can not fish up front. maybe i will try it someday when i am alone, but i hope those days are few and far between, i enjoy fishing with two or three alot better. btw i have been lurking for awile and decided to jump in. my wife says i am an addict, i think she is right.

DEX git a pontoon boat then you can take your wife with you . if she don`t like to fish she can lie in the sun and make you and your partner sandwiches and keep the cold drinka or coffee coming :D

I have been thinking about starting to push jigs as well..But not all the time,long-lining will always be my fav.. I am thinking about getting two extra mounting base's for the T-bars that MR.Rusty made up at the front of the boat so it will be a easy swap from long lining.
do you guys know what exactly the technique is to pushing? Like the way you rig up, speed to push at, and if jigs or minners is the best bait.

Pulling verses Pushing... rods in the back of the boat verses rods in the front of the boat....
Whats the big hairy deal? Perhaps pushing provides the shadow of the boat? You might be the lazy-est. I still hold the record for being the dumb-est... educate me. Still scratching my head....PWW...

The biggest advantages of pushing is you can control the depth of your jig. If you mark fish at 14', you can put your jigs at exactly 13.5'. Pulling/trolling, you can get them to that depth some but not constantly like when pushing. Another thing is you fish much slower so your baits stay in front of the fish much longer. Pushin, your only going .1 - .3mph tops and while pulling/trolling you'll be around 1 mph.

Both have their time and place. I've seen pushers catchin fish when trollers dont and vice verse. Seems like the pushers do better when the fish are hanging tight to each other and/or to structure and are also not feeding aggressively.

I went to the same school as PW:D...so that means we ask alot of questions.:confused:...When pushing, why is it only out of the front of the boat? (Or at least from what I have seen) I have pushed a few time when I was fishing alone and have caught fish this way but I am wondering why you dont see anyone pushing out of the front and the back of the boat at the same time? I would think this technique would work except for maybe the front possibly catching more fish.

Your right Tim the front will catch more because the front is over the break or structure that they are holding on and you push up to it and back off with the front fish finder on the trolling motor. The person in the back would be 15-20' from the fish if holding tight. Work good only if the fish are tight or on definded structure. Long lineing is good when fish are on the move and sattered and you cover more area and quicker.

I like pushing jigs and minners in the colder months when the fished are schooled up and a little slow. You can keep the bait in front of their face where its just an easy meal for them. The rig I use is a 3/4 bell sinker, the swivel, then you leader line with a minner or jig. You can also add a bait above your swivel. Once the days get longer and the water warms up I will start long line tolling when the fish will chase the bait or move to attack a little more. Pushing also works great when fishing structure, my favorite!!:D

I was thinking about "Pushing" yesterday while we were trolling. I updated my 798 with the Down Imaging. Yesterday was the first time I have got to use it and I really like it. I had the screen split to show Down Imaging on 1 side and the 2D sonar on the other side of the screen. I was amazed and how much more I can see now and it would show things from time to time that the 2D would not. This would be a great tool for pushing or tightlining.

My boat wasnt a good candidate for long lining as I didnt have a troller that would work for it so I decided to push. I either fish with hooks or/and jigs (usually tipped with minnows). Advantages I see are you can ease around in timber with some downlines and fish 'em without too many hangups. Also brushpiles dont cause too many breakoffs either as you arent going so fast and usually have time to lift and drop until the weights come loose from the brush. You can bottom bounce with a weight on the end of your lines with your hooks tied above the weights. Speed....anywhere from (guessing) .3 to nothing. Alot of folks call it slow trolling whihc is exactly what it is. I dont cover near as much water fishing this style....slow is the key. When spider rigging you can hang the baits right in their faces which can trigger strikes from less agressive fish. Lastly, you can get your hooks/jigs much deeper than longlining as in the summer months the fish are usually deep...but can still be caught.;)

:DOk. So PUSHING is like fishing down wind of an object unancored, trolling motor on, or very slowly troling around that object specificaly targeting that object.
LONG LINNING dragging jigs behind the boat at diffrent depths with your fingers crossed.

I'm with Rawhide, that sounds like alot of work. Beer, chips and roast beef sandwiches or catching fish....... Hummmm:D:D:D

I normally Spider-Rig when I fish alone. When my Son has a day off He as well as others that fish with me will long-line out the back. They manage to catch about as many as I do. I can spot fish and structure with my D-finder up front and tell them to get ready and watch rear depth-finder for fish. I think sometimes I just get them excited when I pass over them and They grab their bait when it comes by. This happens often as I usually trolling over structure and area that Im familar with. Structure-Depth changes are the triggers to the fish. There is a lot of dead water that I just speed up trolling motor until I find more desirable water. Both methods will produce fish at same time. If area you have just went over is holding a lot of fish I inform him Im going to make a wide sweep and come back though same area and pick up more. I usually have a pattern set in my mind before I put in water. It is a must to explain to your partner where and how we will fish an area and tell him of turning ahead so he can adjust his line lenghts to keep from tangling. Just my thoughts on the subject. How about rod lenghts, most of the boats I saw pushing sat. all had 8 rods with each being 10 or 12 ft. I've got a mixture of lenghts from 7 to 12 ft. Can anyone tell me how to fish with varied lenght rods. I don't want to go out and buy 6 more 12 footers to go along with the 2 I have...

Lot of people fish the same size rods, say 12'. I have 4 16' rods in the front center and on each side are 14', 12', 10 for a total of 10 rods. The longer rods in the center are there so my bait isn't close to my trolling motor.
Y'all was talking about rods out the back while spider rigging, try putting out a couple rods with a float and your bait 2' to 3' deep and only let them out about 10'. They will catch a lot of fish for you!

Alright Tim were going to have to try this pushing thing. I don't know if I can sit next to you that long especially if your going to talk astro physics all day.

All my rods are 14ft, I wish I had some 16 footers though

I only use 4-12 ft. rods out front. My rodholders are pointed in a semi- half circle and I can change their directions quickly. Ive found 4 poles is enough to take care of running trolling motor and watching depthfinder. The wind can really complicate spider-rigging as well as hang-ups. Ive had 3 rods down with fish at same time and this gets interesting and exciting and takes a while to get it together. Partner usually has 3 -10 ft. rods out back, one trailing to each side and the other dead center with varying lengths. In order to help hold my Boat straight I leave my Motor down just low enough that the Hydrafoil is on surface. When you get hung up, and you will, Let the Driver know and stop before you hang other rods. One Big Plus of this type fishing is the fish usually set the hook, just slowly lift the rod and bring to the side if possible. A dip net with a long handle is a must to reach out to meet these long rods. I hope these tips will help you guys. It can get Frusttrating at times and Patience is a must. Bottombumper

the more i hear of this technique the more i like it. going to get me two more 12 footers from the crappie shop and i am gonna start practicing. Well, when the boat gets out the shop again, I will start practicing then!:mad:

Try 8 , 12 footers and all of them go down at the same time, now that is fun!

I only fish 8 13'ers off the front of my boat. I dont want anything longer as I dont break my poles down when riding to and from the lake and the 13'ers stow well in my 16' Skiff. I just slide them under the front deck and down one side of the center console. Once at the ramp I stand them all up in rod holders so you can get to them to get them out in the water. I usually fish double rigs until the fish really turn on. Then one hook and minnow (or jig and minnow) on 8 different poles really gives you a workout.:eek: The really fun part;)....catching slabs on real long telescopic poles. Nothing quite like it.;):) One other thing...it's real easy fishing the shallows with the poles since you control the depths to what you want your hook in the water to be, even if it's only a couple of feet. I mainly keep 1 oz. sinkers on the bottom of my rigs with the hooks above, but you can change around your rigs and go to more conventional type setups with much lighter weights and add floats for some shallow water fishing when the fish hit the banks.;)

Now I really spider rig. i have 4 pole each side up front.13 ,12,10,9 and Ms Jiggs has 3 each side out back 7',6',5' and also have a couple out along each side and they are 5'. we normally get quite a few fish out back and also slong the sides. 1/22 and 3/4 oz on bottom of line with hooks up about 118" above weight. control depth and keep bait in front of fish. move slow or slower.

can someone explain what type of sinker to use. i have noticed some use 1 oz or 2 oz but what kind. also do you use a swivel, how far does the sinker go from swivel or the bottom jig or hook. thanks

Seems to me you could just slow pull, with the weight to keep the bait down. Like in Rawhide's boat, front and back, in real time with the depthfinder. In standard pushing isn't the bait out in front of your depth finder?

It looks to me like the technique is in slowing the bait and keeping it at a constant depth. so correct me if wrong, but you could be set up in a pull configuration with rod holders, but still keep the bait down and slow.

You could do that. Matter of fact alot of boats with two or more guys fish a spread of poles off the bront AND off the back. Thus, making a boat look sorta like it has spider legs on both ends (spider rig;)). I believe the key is getting your hooks in front of the trolling motor to get to the fish before the troller does to catch 'em before they spook. And as already posted, some use their poles out the back of the boat with floats getting their hooks a bit farther away from the prop wash.

I'm not sure of the actual name of the sinkers but I buy 'em from Walmart. The 1 oz. size comes 3 to the pack.They are the bell sinkers which has the little wire running thru them which makes a small loop on top of the sinker to tie your fishing line to. Maybe some kind of bass sinker maybe? I dont know the name.:confused::p And no, I dont use swivels.
