Making Popeye Jigs
What kind of feathers (hackles) are typically used on popeye jigs? I'm just getting started on making my own. I see they're sold as "Saddles" and "Necks". What's the difference and which one should be used?
They sure seem pricey too. I'll probably start off just making black ones as that's my favorite one.
Any good sources for hackles?
Thanks All

I would go with strung neck hackle, and I bought them at bps, but I suggest you get them elsewhere. waite till skip chimes in, I'm sure he knows good sources.

I didn't realize there were so many types of hackles. Some look like "prized" ones for their respective prices.
I need to be raising me some black chickens :)

strung neck hackles are not expensive, maybe three dollars a pack I'm thinking. check barlows tackle if you can't find a sponsor on the site with them. crazy angler tackle, grandpa bobs, maybe.

Been making for for a few years now and use Neck Hackle for the tail. Saddle hackle is a bit stiffer and tapers faster and has the fluff farther up the stem. Mostly used for palmered hackle of collars.
As PBUG2009 said get with Crazy Angler and he should have what you need.

Thanks for the info. Crazyangler had a lot a of stuff but looks like you need to mail a check. So I'll probably go with Barlow.

Just so you know Crazy Angler is also a member here at Crappie.com as Flatfish46 so keep checking back with him. He's a good guy and I enjoy doing business with him.
On the Hackle thing, if you want more info please just PM me as we have not covered but a very little info on all that is available and what it's used for. Dry Flies, tails and palmered and collars and each is different. All the little variations like the most costly salt water hackle I use that is 4"-6" and then the less costly 3"-5" like Barlow's Tackle and Crazy Angler have. Anyway lots of things to learn about hackle and so many other materials.
