Mr. Crappie line works fine for me and it seems to be at least 33% stronger than the advertised test.
I won't say I've used every line under the sun but I have used a good number of them. As long as it comes from one of the reputable line companies I buy whatever is the best value. I was addressing this topic on another forum recently when the topic came up concerning line choices and how frequently to change it. I said that I have never lost a fish when it was the line's fault. As long as you keep mono protected from UV before and while it is on the reel I think any line is good line.

i aiways used the various trilene lines too, but i just loaded 2 reels with suffix elite hi-vis. we'll see.
If you don't mind a Spectra line I would sugest Fins Wind Tamer braid, I use it on all my reels and it is fantastic. I fish professional salt water redfish tournaments, it is very abrasion resistant and fray resistant, thats my 2 cents worth. Jdub
Vicious high vis panfish line is the ticket .......... great sight ability and good stability and reel memory.... been using it a couple of years and really satisfied. That and stren are in my opinion are the only choice forr me
i use 6 lbs silver threads. that's my two cent's.
nowadays i use power pro 10 pound braid.if i get hung up in a tree, all i have to to is yank hard and the tree branch is torn off and just hafta reel it in and remove the branch from the hook :D sometime i wanna try 8 and 5 pound power pro braid tho.see how those hold up.
What about line color , does it make a diff. ? To the Crappie that is .
... since I started using it, oh .. 15yrs ago, or so :p
Some think it might, in real clear water .... but, I don't fish water depths where I can see the bottom. Too many other things can spook fish in that situation, to blame it on the line color.
I've used lines of various brands, and the colors were : red, silver/grey, yellow, gold, chartreuse (more or less), dull green, bright green, clear/blu, multi-colored (camo), white, and black. Some were mono, some were braid ... but, I caught fish with all of them.
Currently I'm using Mr Crappie Super Hi-vis (USA made version) in 4lb test. It's the "chartreuse" (more or less) color that I mentioned. I'm using it, for the same reason I've used "colored" line for so many years .... "I" can see it ;) (and since I'm casting or dock shooting most of the time, I need to see the slightest line movement)
I really don't care if the fish can see it, or not ... I doubt they're smart enough to know that it's a "danger sign" (until they've already hit my bait, and then it's too late .. for them :p ) The way I figure it, given the way I fish & where I fish, and the normal water clarity I fish in ... I'm better off being able to see the line, whether the fish do or not. I'd probably miss alot more fish, not being able to see the line, than what I might miss from them shying away from it ... and even if the color does spook the fish, it apparently doesn't spook them all :D

Thanks for the info Crappiepappy , am getting some Mr. crappie clear w/chartreuse marker in the 4 lb test to replace the 6lb . Being an ole Bass fishman it's hard to go to the lite line LOL.
I like the vicious panfish line 6lb. test, in clear blue.
I cant imagine why you have to replace the Trilene so often. It is some wonderful stuff. XL that is. Try the P-Line , CX premium in Hi-Vis flo green. It is dynamite . 2# Fireline will out cast anything out there. I have 2 problems with it. I cant see it and it is so thin that when using a loop knot the jigs wont stay on the line.
Trilene XL has always worked well for me.CF
vicious hi-vis for me
... consider this :
I made a point of saying that the Mr Crappie line I had, is USA made. It is several years old, but still good stuff. That being said, however .... it would appear that the current Mr Crappie mono is being made in China. Others that have purchased this current version, have said that it's not as good ... not as strong, & not as limp.
I would also advise against using just any "marker" to change a line's color. Some markers may have chemicals in them, that may weaken or deteriorate the line. It's usually best to buy a line that's already "hi-vis" IMHO.
There's also no special reason to drop down to 4lb test, if your equipment handles 6lb test. I'm just using 4lb test on all of my reels, because I was given a 1500yd spool of the Mr Crappie mono ... and I don't break off very often :p Now, some of the reason for that has to do with the line ... some of it due to the fact that I don't get to fish all that often ... but, alot of it is due to using weedless jigheads. ;)
So, with all due respect .... if/when I run out of this spool of line ... I'm seriously going to give Suffix & Vicious a good looking over. Some members I know are using these lines, and they seem convinced that they're good stuff.
I'm an "ole Basser", myself ... but, I started my fishing with Crappie (pre-teen yrs to late teen yrs). I "added" being a Bass angler, in my late teen yrs ... but never let it totally take over my fishing pursuits. From about 20yrs or so ago, my Bass fishing has faded to the "once every year, to every couple of years" stage ... and Crappie are 98% of my fishing pursuits.
.... luck2ya, whatever your decision

Going to try the 4lb while casting ,leave the 6lb for the trolling rigs and maybe try some 4lb on a trolling rig or two.
I have been using Hi-Vis yellow stren for probably 40 years. It started with ice fishing. 2 & 4 lb. Open water i use 4 & 6 lb. In clear water i tie on a flouro leader of about 16 to 36 inches, pending on the different water dephts. I'm with Pappy. I like to seee the line & I don't think it matters to the fish especially when they turn on the feed bag.
Hi-Vis Yellow Stren is my chosen line. I occasionally switched to other lines, but always ended up going back to the Stren.
i use 2lb fireline crystal braid. its great for fishing around brush.
I use Stren,Trilene XL in clear clear blue and green and Mr Crappie in camo.
Had some cabelas Proline in rootbeer brown and liked it but they quit making it.
I got hooked on a log and pulled it clean out the water,my buddy said what kind of line was that, as it was so thin and invisable in the water. I told him it was Tectan 5.7lbs. "I've got to get me some of that" he said, I bought it at cabela's, Now they have stopped selling it because there is no distributor here in the USA. I first read about this line in Fish, Fur, and Game mag. 20 yrs. ago and been using it ever since. I got some off ebay last week, and I plan on having some sent from Germany where the plant is. Belive me I like to cried when cabela's stop selling this line and from what I've read in thier forums a lot, I mean a lot of others are crying too.
i use trilene 99% of the time
I'm in agreement with the crisco kid.Up until last year I've been using trilene and it's still a very good line. When I started working for Cabelas last year I kept hearing about how great Tectan line is,gave it a try and loved it.It's super strong with a lower daiameter compared to trilene and stren and has low memory and casts fantastic. When I found out Cabelas was not going to carry it and clearanced it off I bought every spool they had so I'm stocked up for awhile.I've seen it on ebay sometimes so I'd check there for starters.Defintely the best mono out there,I'm not big on the braided lines, especially fishing for panfish. To me,braids are more for bass fishing.
been using 4# trilene xl for crappie and bluegill for a long time. never had any issues at all.
Hey guys I'm seeing a lot of you talk about 4lb line, I've never gone less than 6lb. Do you guys break off on fish a lot with the 4lb casting? Also I like the trilene line, I think the reason we may have to change it out is the stretch in it. Mine gets weak once I've caught a certain amount of fish. Here's the million dollar question: Anyone know of a line out there that can help prevent line twists? I know it has to do with casting and your line eventually twisting from working the bait back in, just haven't found one that there's no worries of having twists from time to time. I usually pull all the line off my reel, hold it, and reel it back on every now and then to straighten my line out, but it's not a 100% fix. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Nope! Four pound is plenty strong enough for any bluegill or crappie. I've landed lots of carp and catfish over 10# on 4# line. Besides, most lines on the market are stronger than what the label says. The box may say "4#", but it will probably break closer to 6#.
No, but I know of several good reels that will prevent line twist. I use Daiwa or Shimano reels that have some type of anti-twist device built into them.
If i'm in thick stuff i'll go with 15# spider wire. It comes in 4# diameter so it works well in my tackle and the snag usually breaks off before the line does.
MR. Crappie
I'm using 6LB Suffix Siege Neon Tangerine line and really like it.
4 or 6 lb test Mr. Crappie.
I like Cajun Line Red Cast in 4 lb, have landed many nice crappie with it, also some nice bass 3-5 lb and a few carp that went 8+ and one channel cat that was just shy of 15lbs! A side note I caught my biggest cat a channel that went 40 lbs on 17 lb cajun line.

Trilene XL or XT
i'm using Mr.Crappie camo 6lb. pretty strong. made in Germany. Now it's made in Taiwan. Go figure.
Mr. Crappie...my casting rods have 4# for casting/shooting jigs & 6# for casting Roadrunners. This line does have some memory in colder temps, but I have no problems Spring through Fall.
