powder paint???

how well does powder paint stay on jigheads without baking them?i had a problem a guy said the paint was coming off and the jigs only went through the mail.i know the guys telling the truth so no problem there.i talked to the lady at the post office and she said if they ran it threw the seperating machine it could have done it because its metal to metal and it smashes envelope size packages pretty hard. problem there is i wrote hand cancel on the package but she said they dont catch them all.what i do is heat it up with a grill lighter for 5 to 8 seconds depending on size then swish around in the pro tec powder paint then dip in water to cool

the paint stays on ok and i did that when i first started painting jigs and the paint wears off after a while so i ended up investing in a toaster oven and once u bake the jigs the powder paint sets up like an epoxy and its really solid after that

look around at a garage sale and find a little toaster oven and bake the paint on they will last forever :) its well worth it i found a toaster oven at a yard sale for $5.00 and been using it ever since

So if you bake them after you paint them....how long do you bake them and at work temp? I'm doin 1/100, 1/80, 1/64, 1/32 mainly I'm personally afraid that if I bake them the lead will melt off the jig heads then I will have wasted paint and lead....

When I bake them I set the oven for 15 min at 325 degrees. I do not always bake them though. The powder stays on pretty good. I lose a few jigs so maybe if I didn't they might show signs of chipping.

I don't bake them either. After heating the head with a heat gun, then swishing it throught the powder paint, tap off excess, then hold it in front of the heat gun for a few seconds and hang up to dry overnight (although you can tie on them almost instantly when they are cool.
I've never had a jig chip or loose paint either fishing them or thru the mail.

I have sent jigs in the mail, and I've had some report that they got them with the paint off completely down to the bare lead. I bake mine and I know it doesn't come off that easily. It is because they send the bulky package through a machine and it gets stuck and damages the jigs. It's the carelessness of the P.O. BTW why do you put your jigs in the water to cool?

I bake mine the same as Oldwun. If you're afraid they will melt, just take a half dozen bad ones that are painted and bake them. See what happens. Naturally I wouldn't do 100 jigs, I think you will be fine.

78mudbug for time and temps look at the thread CSI Cure Temps and time.I use a conventional oven for mine and hang on the rack.For guys that do this use the top rack and put foil or a cookie sheet on the second one to catch any drips you may get,it will save ya some grief from the other half ha ha.Also Ive found that if I bake all colors at 395 for 10 minutes you can bounce them off a concreate floor and not chip the paint,it will dent the lead but paint will stay intact.Best of luick to ya

You will have a much better product when you bake the powder paint in a toaster oven. You can get one at thrift stores or Goodwill for about two dollars. 15 minutes at 325 should do the job. When shipping also use some type of bubble wrap. You want satisfied customers.

If you use a vinyl or lacquer paint finish, always use a type of clearcoat topping.

Pure lead melts at 600*F (higher if it's hard lead)... powder paint flashes at 350*F, your lead will not melt at 350*F or even 400*.

A toaster oven is much better for painting and curing. Heat your raw jigs to 350-375*F in a toaster oven, you can heat many at the same time (I do 10 at a time, but you can do more). Remove them 1 at a time and swish in the paint and return them back to the oven to finish flashing the paint. After the paint has flashed on all of them, remove them and let them cool, then return the painted jigs to the oven and bake at 350* for 15-20 min. Your paint will be much stronger.

Painted and uncured jigs are pretty fragile, just dropping one on the floor will chip off the paint. Curing them really toughens them up!

It doesn't surprise me at all that your paint chipped off in the mail, and even if it hadn't it would've/will chip off when your customer fishes with them and he won't be happy or satisfied and probably won't buy anymore from you.

You can buy a brand new toaster oven for 20-30$ at Wal-Mart, well worth the money!

If you're not going to cure the powder paint why even bother doing it!!!!!

If you're taking the time to powder paint you do have to clean up and you can be baking your heads while you do the cleaning. Even small jigs won't melt while curing.

If you're using a toaster oven GET AN OVEN THERMOMETER!!!!!! There's been many threads on this site about the temps some of them get to when set at 350 degrees.

If you're worried about dripping you can use tin foil on the bottom of the oven or here's how I do mine. The aluminum pans I punch holes around the edge and as I powder paint the head it gets hung in one of the holes.

After the three small trays are loaded up they go on the cookie sheet (They're mine and the only thing they get used for), and into the oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Any drips are contained in the aluminum pans.

I'm curin my first round of jigheads, will let ya'll know if I have any melt, I have it at 350 for 15 minutes....

I would'nt even bother powder painting if you dont cure them. after a head is cured right it is hard as a rock and can be thrown on the ground and not chip off. I cure all my colors at 300 for 30 minutes and never had a problem with the paint coming off. a member here named Perch has used my kips and said he has caughty alot of trout with my jigs and paint still looks good.

I've just joined this site because of all the great information I've been able to get from it. It has sure saved me a lot of time and trouble.

I spoke with Do It company last week and a rep told me it was better to let them air cool instead of dipping in water after heating. He said dipping in water could make them brittle. (I had asked because of a video I had seen on the internet)

The rep also mentioned you shouldn't heat your jigs too long when curing. He said about 12 minutes at 290 degrees is all it should take. He said as soon as it sets that's all it's going to do anyway.

Originally, I had been hand painting my jigs. This took me forever. I started powder coating a couple of weeks ago. It didn't take me long to realize powder coating was not only much tougher but you could colors you could never get with paint.

I made my share of mistakes but this site and video's on the internet got me back on track. I love being able to pour and paint my own jigs and not have to depend on a store having it in stock to get what I want.

What I do is heat my jigheads with a heat gun, quickly run it through the powder paint, tap off the excess and hang them on rack making sure they do not touch. As soon as it is full, I stick them in a toaster oven I bought from Walmart (about $25) and heat. I only use this toaster for curing jigheads. I don't know if it could be harmful to cook in it but I would not recommend it to anyone.

Be careful about putting any jigs directly over the heating elements. IA couple of times I did have a little melting and runoff. Now I try to always check to make jigs are to one side or the other.

I feel I have made a lot of progress in a very short time. Most of it was due to so many experienced jig makers on this site who were willing to share what they know. I very much appreciated all the help I got. What started out as something to make my fishing trips more productive and enjoyable has turned into another enjoyable hobby.

If you should have problems with you paint running or dripping while curing, you can hang them by the eye of the hook with a piece of wire (I use christmas tree ornament hangers). This way if the paint should run or drip it will go to the back of the jig and won't mess up the head.

Thanks for the idea i usally only have this problem with my glow colors becaus ei dip white then glow and it gets thick but now ill do white cure then do glow and hang thanks

My mistake was not cleaning the eye of the hook before I cured them. Man, they are tough to clean.
I don't mean to steal this mans thread, but when you use white for an undercoat, I should cure it before the finish coat? Also I am curious how some of you use different colors on the same jig head.

what i do is heat jig do 1st color then heat again add second either by dipping area i want done or sprinkling it on with a small paint brush.

I use an acetylene torch tip cleaning tool to clean the eyes of the hooks before curing. It has different sized wires and they're pretty still with a file built into the wire. These are available at Home Depot and Lowes in the welding tools section.

I find that it really helps to prevent dripping and running if you cure your white base coat before applying a second coat, and also adds durability!

Multiple coats:

I have found that the Pro Tec brand powder paints that contain glitter like Dragonfly, Redbug, and Copperhead (just to name a few) are fairly translucent... and when applied over a opaque base coat like the flourescent colors, change both colors. For instance, Dragonfly applied over Hot Pink will give you a light purple with gold glitter... Copperhead over flourescent chartreuse will give you a brownish yellow (I call it Monkey Puke) with green glitter. You can also use the translucent colors over glow colors, they won't glow as brightly.. but will still have some glow and be a unique color.

For 2 tones, I pick a base and then just do a half dip of another color.

GCD..That was an informative reply. I found it interesting and only makes me want to learn more. I like that red one, well... I like all of them. I will do some more reading on the glitter paint. I just read the first post I made on this forum and my intention was to just make a couple different types of jigs. Well, thats history now. I haven't been at it a month and I already have at least 50 and they are all different....You can't take it with you.

The red one is a combination of 3 different color layers... PM me if you'd like the combination... I can't give away all my secrets on the WWW yanno!;)

They hold up alright but they chip alot faster if you don't bake them first. My advise to you is buy a toaster oven to bake them much easier than the oven. And clean out the eyes first because if you don't the eyes way harder to clean out trust me.
