Morels
Not until now!
I think this year I'm going to really try to find some. I have poked around a couple times and haven't ever found any.
I love mushrooms.
took my new son-n-law to a few spots, get it on his mind, he is suppose to get the ambition up and hunt them for me, will take him to some spots that are to hard for me to get to, and see how he does, I will hunt the easy to walk to spots, ummmmmmm
Would be nice to have the picnic table at A-44 full of them at camp. Sure sounds good.
eaten them once, and have spent lots of time trying to find them ever since... never found one in the wild though... i will try even harder this year cuz they were so goooood!!!
what's the trick to finding these things?
i've heard near old dead trees in an area where there is good moisture, but really have not idea as i have never found one. what temperature is best to find them?
probably as many places, and conditions, and tricks, as there are those that hunt them, I start in late march, hunting north slopes, find them in cedars, elm thickets, hollers, and sycamore groves, have found them on the side of gravel roads, close to ponds, open pastures, city parks, and hospital grounds. I never think they are not there. best way is to take a walk a bring along a bag, and stick. walk slow, and concenrtate. some say carry a paper bag, some say plastic, some say leave the stump, some dont, good luck
I only have 1 trick that works for me.I try to follow a creek,fenceline,hilside..anything that presents a path.I can slow down and concentrate on about a 10 foot wide area following a border.Walk down one side to the end,get on the other side and walk back.
Gets overwhelming just walking into the woods and trying to look everywhere at once.
Wear lots of tick protection, but you will still get them :(
you mean these guys?
I used to find lots more on the farm when we had cattle. Guess they kept the vegetation thinned down enough for the morels to pop through? I get excited to find enough for one meal, can't even imagine finding the quantity that you guys do! That would be a blast! :)
I have a lot of elms in the backyard on an east facing slope. Some years I've found enough for a meal right there. :D It varies though. Gosh I'm hungry for some NOW!
Watch out for those mushrooms in a cattle field.."take a trip without leaving the farm.."
