Saw some BnM Westpoint Cappie Poles at a local tackle shop for 21.00 fun dollars that I am tempted to pull the trigger on one. I was specifically looking at a 10 footer #WPCR 10. 10 ft becuase I usually fish from a Kayak and longer poles become on the unweildly side of things more tmes than not.
Is this a decent rod for jigging a jig or occasionally tight lining a minnow on Crappie around brush in 3-14 ft of water?
there decent rods, you cant really go wrong with B&M id buy em if i were you
I think EVERYONE has their own opinion when it comes to crappie poles... and you KNOW what they say about opinions. :)
That said, I love BnM poles. I own several, in various models and lengths. However, the West Point poles are just way too flimsy for my likes. They just don't seem to have any backbone.
If you are looking for a good, inexpensive rod, take a look at the Hi-Tech Jiggin' Stick. I bought a couple from the guys at Grizzly Jig (item JS102) for $16.95 each. I'm tellin' you... for under $20, you would have a very hard time beating this rod... sensitive tip, yet good backbone... just my opinion.
my input is....I've only owned 1, the tip broke second time out, i replaced the tip and it broke again. It now sits in my retired pile of poles. Thats the only experience i have with b-n-m.
They are junk !! Never had 1 that did not break. Walley Marshall's are much better rods in my opinion.
I love B&M's, but not the West point....You get what you pay for!
i have one of the west point's. It's a little thick. The other graphite poles are better in my opinion.Quote:

I fish primarily Wally Marshall 16 foot Tightline Specials. I (knock on wood) have never broken one and I really think you could boat a 25lb flying carp with one. They are tough. They are also pretty heavy. I have always been principally a bobber fisherman. I have used them tightlining, but they are kind of stiff. WM makes an unbelievably good light rod (Universal) that is super duper sensitive and tough, but it only goes up to 14 feet.
This year I committed to learn to tightline better. I bought 3 BM pro trollers from Grizzly and they are about one third lighter and more sensitive. They work awesome and the guys at Grizzly stand behind their product!!!! I also bought a couple 12 foot lightweight BMs to jig fish the oxbows and creeks. So, I vote yes to both brands

i stand with Kincade...i think B&M is junk...they break very easy and i dont have time to keep replacing rods...i have a ton of outlaw rods and i have only broke one due to being stupid and getting mad and smacking a dock with it as hard as i could...i have seen a 32lb pound flat head landed on a 12ft outlaw...but then again you get what you pay for...
I just bought me a "Wally Marshall 12 foot Crappie Thunder".
Haven't gotten a chance to use it yet, but, am really liking it just playin around with it........
I got a couple of Sam Heaton super sensitives at Grizzly last year. I like them for a production type pole. I didn't need them. I am just an easy "target".:o
I also have a garage full of BnMs. All breaks were my own doing.
I'm on my fourth Sam Heaton Super Sensitive. I have broke tips on three of these. They seem to break on me about 4-8" from the tip. BnM actually replaced the second section of the rod for me on my first 2. The third breakage I felt was my fault. I think BnM has good CS. I also have a couple of the Wally Marshall Pro Series rods. The Marshall rods seem to be more durable. I do like the sensitivity on the Heatons better. I tend to prefer these rods in 12' length. Browning make a decent rod in the six rivers series at 11'6" I finally found a Shimano rod I have been looking for the last 10 years. It is Very light and 11'6" also. Pretty $$ though. I have to have Cork Handles on my rods. I think my next rod will be an Outlaw. Does anyone know if Outlaw make a 12' with a cork handle.
My 2 cents! I really like the Crappie Wizard poles by Richard Williams and The Capps and Coleman. BnM has always done me right if I had any problems.
I really like the Richard Williams BnM poles, especially when I'm fishing with him!!
outlaws do not come in cork in 12ft biggest they come in cork is 11ft...
I have broken both(WM and B&M) of them, but never did I feel like it was because the rods were inferior. Always put them under some kind of undesigned stress. I don't believe you can go wrong with either of them.
Outlaws Is The Only One For Me

dont get me wrong...outlaws are heavy but what other rod loads up tho the whole rod and not just the tip? i have seen JR demo outlaw rods and he will pull the tip down to the handle...i asked wally to do it with his and he wouldnt...i dont think the Reps from B&M would do it with theirs....im not trying to push outlaws on anyone but they are what i have faith in...i have used alot of rods and have some prototypes right now from another rod company that im testing and i havent found a rod yet that will stand up to what a outlaw will...thats just my .02

I have some Wally Marshall rods and a BnM and a Bill Dance. Don't buy the Bill Dance, it is pure junk. I think Bill let this one slip by him. I would not want my name on anything as bad as these poles.
BnM Pro Staff Trolling Rods are great. Good backbone at the base and sensitive tips.
Spend the additional money and buy the BGJP or the Sam Heaton for jigging. I have some of the Westpoint's in the 8 foot version and have used them for 7 years now longlining jigs and catfishing in the summer and have never had one break. I've only had one BnM pole break that wasnt my fault. It was probably the result of a bad place in the rod. To all you guys who hate your BnM rods, if you have any 14 footers you want to get rid of send me a pm.Quote:

I had bad luck with the BNM rods. I had three new Bnm rods break and when I called Bnm a Lady in customer service basically treated me like a liar so I threw the rods in the trash and switched to Wally Marshall Rods. I do not abuse my rods and I have had great success with Wally Marshall Rods. I hated to buy them because they are made in China. I have been fishing with them almost two years with absolutely no broken rods. Are their any AMERICAN MADE QUALITY RODS OUT THERE?
Yes, if anyone can afford them? Steelhead blanks make the best crappie rods that hold up. Graphite / glass blended rods are the most durable.Quote:

I fish from a kayak and I am not a huge fan of long rods although they definitely have their advantages in many situations. Since I fish from a Kayak, I normally use a 6-7 foot light spinning rod. Just thought I would try a "real" Crappie rod and see how if works out for me, hence the reason I was looking at the 10ft models only.
Think I will try the West Point model and see how it works out since I wont have much invested in it if I should decide I really dont like a rod that long. If it does work out really well then maybe I will up grade to something a little better quality wise, a little lighter and hopefully something with a bit more back bone throughout the rod length.

I have a 10' West Point rod I use for spider rigging and sometimes night fishing and I like it. May buy a couple more someday.
I have a 11foot ultralite and I like it. So I would say, at that price quoted I would buy it.
I have BnM poles and I have Ugly sticks. The BnM pole broke but was quickly replaced by the company. My Ugly sticks have not broken in over 15 years of use. I really like both brands.
I have to agree with Earl, the lady on the phone at BnM was not very nice.
I guess I am pretty lucky. I have several B&M rods and several WM rods and I have only had one rod break and that was my fault. One call to B&M and problem was solved at no cost.We do not have a dealer close by. However I know every situation is different. Good luck on which ever rod you purchase.

I can list some more, their are several blanks made here as well. You may be referring to crappie rods only? But 90% of all the components, guides, grips, reel seats do come from China. If most rods were not labor sourced from there no one could afford them.:(
