Sinking Hay Bells, anyone done it?

Have a large supply of hay bells. Have heard of many people sinking them and then the hay seeds will grow able to the sunlight that gets through the water. Has anyone ever done this? We sink most beds in about 20-25 ft of water. WOuld this be to deep for the hay to grow? Just an idea...

Never done it, but I've heard of some guys who wrap square bales in chicken wire to keep them together. when they get ready sink them, they stick pcs of cane or pvc in the bale and make a porcupine out of it. I wouldn't think a dry bale would sink, but maybe i'm wrong.

Id wrap it in wire and sink a few blocks on it then a bottle or two to hold it off the bottom. Or would it be better to let them sit on the bottom?

I bet it is hard to sink a bale of hay! I have heard people talk about but have never tried.

I put a couple in my pond a few years back. Drove a wood stake down then tied the hay bale to it. It did not take long for them to become waterlogged. I was hoping the fathead minnows would spawn on it.

Square bell shouldnt be to hard. Just wrap it in wire im thinking. I know i can get it to the bottom but will it grow into grass?

Not likely to grow especially deep. Bales of hay will make feed for algae and draw minnows , crawfish, and insects. That should draw predators like Crappie. Just easier to sink Persimmon trees or pallets beds that will last longer I think.;)

We sink anthing, trees, cane, and pallets. Just wanted to see what the hay would do, guess we might give it a shot sometime.

I went fishing with a buddy on Tuckertown, He told me they sunk some there
a few years ago. He said he would never do that again, the snakes liked it
to much.

i dont think snakes would be in these at 20+ feet.

I would think it would take allot of weight to sink a bale of hay.

How much, the bale its self is 70-90lbs?

we sink hay bales every year we take and tie a bag of sack crete to it and dig holes in it then pour mollasses int it the syurp and hay grow alge to attract minnows,you do have to stay with it for a few min till it sinks,thats how we do it

I have caught quite a few crappie around hay bales...There used to be a marina that put them out around there fishing pier...These were alfalfa hay bales...

NO!!!! you will not grow grass under water from dropping a hay bale. IF you do it, use alfalfa hay if possible. The bales are only used to draw in smaller fish that feed on the bale. They do work, but like anything, location, location, location. In my opinion, 25' is too deep to sink them. 5'-15' seems more reasonable.

Sunk a round roll 2 years ago, not on purpose though it did not stop rolling til it got in bout 4 foot of water. Caught bass all around it after bout a month never any crappie, Also it was good for a snake early in the morning
