I was woundering if any one could give me some help on were to fish. I have been on kentucky lake one time and I was going to try and go in a couple of weeks. I thought maybe I could go catch some of those big slabs that I keep
seeing pictures of. Thanks

What part of the lake do you usually fish? I spend most of my time in Blood River. They were doing good a few weeks ago but after the cold snap the second week I have been on the hunt for them myself. They should set up on regular winter spots in the next week. We just need some stable days with no cold fronts. I'll attach a good ones from November. One a little over 2 pounds and one a little under.

I have only been on the lake one time in the dark bass fishing. I would probley stay on the north end but still wouldn't have a clue where to go.
When you coming, The north end has alot of good fishing about anywhere you go..
I will be there in a couple of week's if the weather and my wife are permiting me to. (wife)lol lol!!!!

I've fished Ky Lake once a year for the last maybe 10 years and off and on for 10 years before that. I fish the nothern end now on the easten (LBL) side in mostly Pisgah, Smith and Duncan bays. We camp in Hillman Ferry Campgrounds and those bays are close to us. Off and on we fish across the lake in the area around Moors Marina and Resort. I've stayed at a place on the western side at Cypress Bay and I've stayed at Ken Lake State Park. There has also been a few places we stayed at that I can't remember the names of.Quote:

I honestly don't think you could go wrong anywhere you would go. I'm just Joe average and I've caught fish everywhere I've ever stayed on that lake and in almost every condition. Of course some places and some times are better that others, but that's everywhere you fish.
Why not start at Ken Lake State Park and go from there? Plenty of water with in reach of there or you're close enough to the the bridge that you can trailer over to LBL and try a few places over there if the mood strikes. Next time you go, maybe try some place farther south or Ky Dam State Park to the north.
What ever you do be careful and wear your life vest. Get a good map which are available everywhere and stay in the channels.
We go to Hillman Ferry Campgrounds cause we just like the place, not because we feel the fishing is better there than other sections. I always say i'm going to try some other sections of the lake but when I get there, we never do.
I've done as well fishing one section as the other. It's a great lake.
Thank's for the info on were to stay and put in at. When I go i will probably drive there and fish and drive back. As far as the map goes I have a colored lawrance gps unit on my boat. I have tried to find on the internet what the fish on kentucky lake hold on in the winter month's such as depth and structure. All I can find is you better higher a guide. I wouldn't even bother with going but I am way past ready to crappie fish a differnt lake and it is calling my name. My best chance of going is in the winter because in the spring I will be fishing in bass tournment's and hopefully will have sevaral turkery's to mount.thank's for the reply.
you might want to wait, I think all the boat ramps are froze right now.
It will be in about 2 weeks before I can make the trip.

Yosha looks like he's on point....lol bad thing is, if you could get under that ice the crappie would probably be biting:)
I'm from upper Illinois area and I KNOW the crappies are under there!!! Gave all my icefishing gear to my brother before moving here. (DUMMY) Yosha is a female but has never hunted and wouldn't run after anything but a food bowl!!! She has 2 bad ACL's on her back legs and limps alot but keeps on going. Lab/Beagle mix wasn't kind to her...she's not fat just short legged!!! Here's our other dog named Dixie. Boston/Beagle mix. Quite the nose on her and she can dig a hole faster than any dog I've seen. Hopefully she can rid my yard of moles come spring!!!

If a man could get launched he can catch some fish. The lake is back down to winter pool and it's mainly the back parts of the bays that are frozen up. I just got off the boat I I was on the Tn. and Cumberland. Looked to me like the bays on the west sides of both lakes had the most ice. Most of the outer 1/3 of the bays were clean. The water temp is probably in the mid to high 30's but will warm back up with some sunny days.
The 15 day extended forecast calls for temps to gradually climb back into the 50's. Boy oh boy! You think I won't be smoke'n their butts when I get off the boat the first week of Feb!
I think this is gonna be a good year. This cold weather is gonna kill off some bait fish and that's a good thing for fishermen. More compitition for food. Plus the limit was dropped to 20 last year. Also I caught a lot, and I mean a lot of fish last year that were just shy of 10". They'll be keepers this year. I also think that the hight water the last 2 years probably helped the spawn. Especially on the Blacks.
Look'n forward to get'n on the water.

We are planning on a trip to Kentucky Lake sometime in early June, been checking out Cedar Knob Resort and fishing that part of the lake....any input from anyone that has been there???

Good point pappy. I had forgotten all about it. That study, and this may sound like BS, but it was so good that in all honesty it probably hurt the population a little. No kidding. It really got more fishermen targeting the Blacks and catching more fish. Until that study came out only a select few knew about the Blacks and their tendancy to move up earlier and stay longer. Everybody followed the Whites till then.
I read what pappy wrote. There is black's in my home lake or so people say there is. I will try these tip's at my home lake in there clear water.
I was just south of Blood River duck hunting yesterday and the lake froze over bank to bank (including the channel) between sun up and 10:30 am. :eek:Quote:

I can't remember the last time we have had a big shad kill thru the winter. I know it takes around 40 degree water for em' to start dying and judging by the ice everywhere Id say quite a few have kicked the bucket. Should be a good spring!Quote:

It's hard to say.
Some of the bays are clear out toward the main lake but it may be a while before the ramps at the backs of the bays are open.
A lot of it depends on how much wind and wave action the lakes get.
The lakes may be a bit hairy for several days as these huge sheets of thick ice start breaking loose and head north.
What about Fenton, its closer to the main lake/channel. Id say it will thaw before the ramps way back in the bays.
I am not sure about the east side of KY lake but all of the ramps on the west side that i checked yesterday are still frozen solid:eek: Big Bear is frozen form the back to Moors and all of KDM is frozen.

That is good. I went to Barren River Lake yesterday and it was MUDDY. I did find a G-LOOMIS rod with a shimano corudo reel on it in a brush pile so it was a priddy good day!!!!!!:D
Nice but now someone will claim it. I will be on KY Lake at least four times this year. I stick around the Blood River area and do great each year. Obviously, the weather has everything to do with your success. Biggest thing you need to remember is that it is big water with some big weather and waves. If I make a run from one end to the other end of the lake, I pull out and drive the truck. I know others that run it wide open, but I got caught on the lake in one of those bad storms and it was like nothing I have been in before.
Amen to that Jigboy! Kentucky is not a lake to fool around with. I remember when I was young, my mother and father always took us to Kentucky Lake. We had a 18 ft. Procraft with a 15O Yamaha on it. We happened to get stuck in a storm outside of Sugar Bay heading to Ken Lake Marina, and to make a long story short, my mom ended up in Murray hospital with a broken back from a wave. Now that I am older and going to Kentucky Lake with my family....we pull out and drive from place to place. The ramps are wonderful and it does not take long to do. Also I have a smaller aluminum boat and it makes me fish out a certain bay or area alot better. I WILL NOT CHANCE THIS LAKE>.......IT WILL WIN!!!!

I know what you mean jigboy. I have been around these lakes and rivers for over 40 years and once you break that barrier of the mouth of a cove you have just signed up for a whole new adventure. I have left the comforts of the bay with the water as slick as glass only to travel back in 4-6 ft. or better rollers.
Actually the worst weather I got into was not KY Lake. It was Lake Erie but everyone would suspect that as big as that lake is. I fish an 18' Seaark which is aluminum, so I have to watch for storms a lot. I fish Lake Erie every 4th of July but stay within a mile of the island where we stay so I can get off quickly. One day we kept fishing because we where catching so many fish ahead of the front and waited to late. By the time we made it back I witnessed one boat flip completely over and came will close to losing my boat. After getting back to the marina and changing my underwear I thanked God from saving me from my on stupidity. Now, I am lots smarter, mainly becuase I am usually with my two boys.
