Save buckets do this.
Take a five gallon bucket , fill it to within 5 inches of the top with dirt. This will end up being roughly 25pds of quickcrete. Take Vaseline and coat the remaining five inches all the way around the bucket on the inside of course. Then put a plastic shopping bag in the bucket, pour in the quickcrete, when it sets you can pull the Crete right out of the bucket and reuse the bucket,http://i487.photobucket.com/albums/r...1261945831.jpg

Not knocking your idea bigkyd. I did not even read your post before posting this one . Sounds like a good idea if you have the buckets. Should make a good stump field.
-
No problem. I like your idea, seems to me like these would be more manageable than those 16 foot completed condos. I may or may not try to do some stumps but I am definately going to do some of the traditional condos and was trying to figure out the logistics of tranporting the finished condos to the lake. I doubt I would be able to get more than 2 completed ones in my boat but this way I could have several of these bases and one big bundle of bamboo and just assemble them on the spot. Seems to me the only drawback is the added cost of the pvc.
Have you put any out yet? I would also worry about the bamboo splitting when you put the screws in. Has that been an issue? Do you pre-drill a pilot hole?
-
I have put out a lot of these. I do drill 4 pilot holes through the PVC, so that I will have more angles to get the screws started. As far as the boo I don't. I'll cut the boo, so that the nuckel will be below the screw so that if it does split ,it will not pull out. Each bucket costs me roughly 4.50,but it is worth it to me because the simplicity of it all. Split 4 ways 1.12 per bucket.

Sounds good. What is the best diameter pvc to use? Is that 1" in the pics?
-
Depends on how tall you want the brush pile. One inch will get you roughly 8 to 15 ft tall. 3/4 inch will get you 5 to 12 ft tall pile. Depending on the boo.

Another idea to save buckets would to be dig holes in the ground fill with crete and let it cure for a few days if not a couple of weeks. Worked well for me in the past. The molds can be reused or filled in till you need them again... or just plant a tree there

I tried this idea, vaselined the bucket as instructed, used the plastic bag, and wound up breaking the bucket trying to remove the concrete. I think in the future I am just going to use the disposable black buckets you get when you buy shrubs from a nursery.
-
Some can be hard to pull out. I usually turn the bucket upside down and let it's own weight pull it out...
-
Shot - I tried that 2 -3 times lightly tapping the bucket. I even tried pulling on the pieces of pvc trying to make it come out. Still no luck, then I nocked it over trying to really jar it and that is when the bucket broke.:( I could not get the second bucket to come loose either. I gave up in frustration and decided to use the shrubbery buckets which I have several of. I know one thing, the bucket that won't release is going to sink REAAAAAALLLLLLLLYYYYY fast and go nowhere!:p OOOOHHHHHH WELLLLLLL back to the drawing board.

Shot - I did stumble onto an idea with the shrubbery bucket. I have several with the bottom cut out to protect my tomatoe plants in the Spring. I picked up one with the bottom out of it and thought, you know if you put a bag in this pot and pour the concrete when it sets up the sack should slide out the bottom. I'm going to see if that works.

Shot - This shrubbery bucket idea is really working well. I have made several with concrete and 3 pcs of PVC. When the crete is set up I just turn it over and out it pops. I am experimenting with using 25# of crete, 3 pcs of 1 1/2 to 2" of pvc approx 18" long. The boo should safely last 4 yrs and after that the 18" of pvc should hold Spring fish. I am going to use boo that is no longer than 4' because of the shallow water where I am going to drop it. The 25# will easily sink the pieces.

Glad the shrub buckets are working for you. Sorry those others gave you such a fit. My buckets may be different than yours. I have noticed on some buckets there is a crease that you can feel on the inside of the bucket about 5 inches down. You can take an old knife and heat it with a propane tourch and cut that crease out. I bet that is what got ya...Good luck fishing and GOD BLESS....
