January Slabfest Lake Monroe, Sanford, Fl

Well the December Slabfest is behind us. One date canceled due to rainy forecast, next date we fished, but were windblown and cold.
We DID have a good meet and greet regardless.
Now on to the next Slabfest.
This will be held on Lake Monroe, Sanford, Florida.
We have the option to launch and have our picnic at the Lake Monroe Park at 17-92 or we could try the Senior Center, Downtown Sanford, launch at the Sanford Marina and have the picnic at the Senior Center. Chunker has volunteered to arrange the Senior center providing that he has some lead time.
Moon phases, for those who fish by them: NEW MOON Friday January 15 FULL MOON Saturday January 30.

Posting the dates to fish and places to have picnic. You can launch your boat any place and start fishing anytime, no restrictions. DANNY: I will need to check your livewell BEFORE you launch.

Will have the poll close January 7, 2010 to give time coordinate getting reservations for picnic site.

When voting, you need to vote place for picnic and date.

As long as I can follow someone over to the launch that day I,ll be there.

I'm holding off (Vote) till I learn a bit more about the 17/92 park.
Ya'll help convince me that I'd prefer that place over the Senior Center.
I see the Cons for the Senior center, we were locked out, no bathrooms, no water, lots of homeless people (no privacy).
So, is the other place better ??? I believe the parties have to pay a rental fee, how much is that per person (we'll split it up, etc.....
The Senior Center was quite convenient that was about all.

Not trying to convince you or anyone:
Launch fee is 2.00, if you don't trailer a boat in the entrance fee is free.
We reserve a shelter, fee is $15.00, Chucky and Trudy usually reserve the shelter, and we chip in with a dollar or two to defray their costs.
Two launch ramps, dock is small, does not allow to let your boat be tied up, only to place trailer in parking lot and to get trailer to load up.
Some problems with the electric at the shelter, BUT we can run long extension cord to the building that has the restrooms in, or move the electric appliances to the building. Water available, need to supply long water hose to get the stream where you want it.
We have not had any problems with homeless persons.
This area puts you in at the mouth of the St. Johns River, if you are so inclined to fish that area. If you are going to Stone Island??? which is in the south end of the lake, it is a long ride.
I can't think of any other items to address. If any questions please post and someone familiar with the area can address those concerns.

Of course I'm sure the promoters (that's ya'll) will have all these minor inconveniences cleared up by Slabfest day :)

If me and Kev can kick that old fat guy off the boat we'll make it over there in record time :D:D
Weather permitting, we ought to have a great fest (fingers crossed).

I like Lake Monroe Park cause I think I am going to take advantage of the campground Friday night and do some night fishing that night. If anyone wants to do some camping that night, you'll find me around a fire with a beverage in my hand after doing some night fishing.

FYI my secret spot is about a 30 min boat ride from that ramp but I am going to stick it out!

How much they charge to camp ???

How about some company. Got a new tent, but tried to use it at Blackshear. Black nats were terrible. The campground there is nice. Maybe we can get two spots close. I don't remember that you can pull your boat up to shore next to your campsite. I have a brochure some place, but I thought I remembered the charge being $25.00 per nite.

I am going to Talquin for 20 days and returning to Brooksville on the 12th. Will be off the computer from the 23rd thru the 12th.

I called the park but I could not understand what the guy was saying but I think I made out that its $19.00 a campsite but I am sure we could put a couple tents on one. The problem could be parking. I do not think they have a place to tie up the boat.

Probally have to pull the boat. I'll bring my light set up for the night fishing. Haven't done that for years.

I'll be back on line the evening of the 12th.

I reserved just one campsite for myself for Friday Jan 15th. I got spot 20 so if you want to call up and reserve something around there. The phone number is 386-668-3825. You have to be there before 5:30 pm to check in and pay. I forgot to ask about the cost but I wouldn't think it would be any more than $25.

Im hoping to make it......I could really use a little local knowlege though......1st...does the campground have shower & restroom facilities?......electric, & water ?
2nd ... my boat is not suited for big choppy open water....are there acessible protected areas if the wind kicks up? Im not asking for you're spots,...just dont want to make a four hour trip to sit in the truck wishing!!

I know there is restroom facilities, but don't know if there are showers. The camp spots have full hookups.
The lake has many fingers and canals that are protected from the wind and chop.
The St John river flows thru the lake and also have some protection.
BUT!!!, you need to think that we are going to have one of those wonderful Florida days in the 80's with NO wind. Ha! Ha!

I will meditate -n- think real hard -n- stuff like that, & hopefully the weather will cooperate!!! My next challenge will be work..... I got about a 60% shot at getting the weekend off. If everything works out, I'll definetly be there!!! I've thourougly enjoyed getting involved with this forum, & I look forward to meeting all fellow crappie geeks ........My tentitive plan is to camp Friday night .....attempt to embarass all slabfest participants sat. am (yea!! like thats gonna happen!!!).........eat well & tell a butt load of lies sat afternoon at the weigh in.....and possibly stay & fish through sun.

There is an ACE HARDWARE located on Highway 46 WEST of I-4. I believe it is about one mile from I 4 and there is a stop light just beyond the store.

Also, the bait shop at Gander Mountain at I-4 and Lake Mary Blvd opens at 6:00. I think Ace opens at 7:00.

There is a gas station up the road on 17-92 in Debary that sells bait. I've always had great service there.

I will get the name and address tomorrow.

I think that the marina across the river at Port sanford sells bait also.

Ill be getting bait on my way in to the camp ground on Friday night. I will coming up 417 to I-4 so I think the one on 17-92 might be best bet.

Bring the plaques and make sure they're dusted off good. I'm going to Monroe tomorrow and scout out my hot spots....hope phantom's not in them! Been tearing down walls and hanging drywall for two weeks and can't even remember what a bite feels like! Oh Yea, I'm going to try out my secret weapon!!!!
