I know yall were discussing this but I can't find the thread. Which MINN K is the best to buy? The Terrova or the PowerDrive. I'm looking at the 70# Power Drive and add the ipilot to it later. Is this the way to go? The only difference I can see is one as AutoPilot and one doesn't and the Terrova's look a little beefier.
I am on my second power drive and i love it. First one was auto pilot could never get it to work right and it finally crashed. Been using the plain power drive ever since with no problems. I have the 55lb.
Are you getting back into crappie fishing???? Thought you were moving South... I have a Terrova and I am still trying to ge used to it. I have alway's had Maxxum's or like motors(cable driven) in the past. For trolling I like the Terrova much better but that is about it for me. For single poling or casting give me my Maxxum back any day.Quote:

Comparing the Terrova and Powerdrive v2 (regular power drive is no longer made) - Terrova has heel to toe steering on the foot pad - V2 has rock left and right. Terrova has finer steering adjustment and a better mount. Also, can turn on and off the Auto Pilot with the foot pad rather than having to go to the motor head. With the terrova, you can use the remote (co-pilot) and the foot pedal at the same time. Most never use the foot pedal if they have the co-pilot.
You'd prolly be better off going ahead and ordering a Terrova with I-pilot installed. It'd end up being cheaper in the long run and you'd get the autopilot and co-pilot at the same time rather than adding ap, co pilot seperately later or plopping down the big bucks for the I-pilot.
Best I can tell, without the remote co-pilot, the thing would flat out stink. Auto Pilot makes it very useable for spider rigging or long lining, possibly cranks if you've got the juice.
BTW, aren't you in salt water now or soon to be? If so, you'll want the Riptide version definitely. Difference being stainless bearings and sacrificial annode. Only like $30 - $50 more.
This from a fella whose never actually touched a Powerdrive, Power Drive V2, Terrova, Auto Pilot, Co-Pilot nor I-pilot. Never stopped me from forming an opinion though.
Let me know if you need shopping advice for Plasma cutters, Nuclear Reactors, Steam Locamotives or Long Line Cranes. Got plenty of opinions on them too. :)

Oh yeah, what Slimey said too. If you're gonna single pole, hang on to your old one and get a quick detach plate for both. They flat out suck for anything other than when you're using pole holders of some kind.

OK, the above is good for your Masters degree, but to obtain your Doctorate, you will need to memorize the following:
Go ahead and spring for the US2 universal built in sonar and appropriate patch cable. You can get away without it, but the design of the mount will prevent you from securing an external tranducer cable to the shaft. And besides if you go with an external, in the words of a prominate local poster - that'd look jinky.

I am planning on moving to the coast just not sure when. I sold my crappie boat and been looking for another and a deal came down the pipe I couldn't pass up..So fer now I'm BACK on the sac-a-lait. Should have boat this weekend, out of town next week, the week after will rig out for trolling both spiderriggin and long lining.
If the transducer goes out in that thing you are out. I would want the ability to change transducers to fit my needs.Quote:

I think with the ducer built in to the motor housing and the wiring being internal theres much less of a chance for it to go out.
Got a Maxxum and a V-2. Both are beat up as hell (well used). No problems with either except the V-2. Had to buy a new foot control. Membrane switch on left turn corroded and worked when it wanted to. Both are excellent motors.
I have the external td and it is no problem. Just have to watch the wire when launching, but I don't have mine installed the right way. Definately go with the Terrova. I did the same research you are doing 2 years ago and the Terrova was my choice. Never looked back at cable steer models. A lot of you guys talk about single polin being a problem for the Terrova, but I love it. Used my copilot and never touched the foot pedal. Now I think about it, I only use the speed adjuster on it while trollin. Haven't used the pedal for steering since copilot was installed. Just got my ipilot in last Friday, but haven't been able to get to the water to try it.
I just have not yet gotten use to the slow speed of the turn vs. a cable steer like the Maxxum. I river fish alot more than I lake fish and it is even more noticeable in a strong current. It just feels like it takes for ever to get turned and alot of times I have to oversteer to accomidate. Mabey I just have not yet got use to it but I am hunting me a Maxxum and another quick mount just in case. The other thing I can't get use to is that with a cable steer I know right which direction my motor is pointing by the angle of the pedal, I never have to look down. With my Terrova I always have to look at it when turning to monitor the direction it is heading.Quote:

I think I will pass for now. I really like my Terrova in open water and prefer it way over a cable control for trolling. I am gonna find me a Maxxum and another quick mount so I can use both.Quote:

I have a Powerdrive and love it, there is a little delay in the steering but I think the Terrova would have the same issue. I was looking at the Terrova myself but the Powerdrive has a new foot control that I actually like a lot, made the decision easy.
I,ve ran mine for the fishin season --used the co-pilot--works great--
Heel and Toe doe,nt work [Toe does --Heel don,t] talked to several who had the same problem --most of the people had a lot more between the ears than I do--so its not just my lack of smarts [at least thats my story and I,m stickin with it]--:):):)
terrova lets you use the footpedal and the ipilot, other models do not
I'm already off the foot control. It's in a storage bin on the boat in case I need it. Wireless co-pilot is working nice for me. Going to i pilot asap.
Just went over 4 months on the water with the Terrova with I-Pilot. My favorite method of fishing is single pole and I will say it was a bit of a challenge in the beginning with the remote. I am just now comfortable with the remote in my left hand and single pole in my right. I never use the foot control.
On those 2 days this year that the wind was below 7 mph the spot lock is awesome for fishing underwater structure. Completely hands free. Wind 10+ and the spot lock will not keep you close enough to hand fish but does hold while you take fish off and such (not a feature Wannabe would benefit from).
I would pay the extra again for Terrova simply for the spot lock and advanced auto pilot.
the spot lock is a feature unique to the i pilot...I will be adding that soon (the i pilot that is)
