I have read a few posts that mentioned the 800 series coming out from HB. Is there any info released yet on those models and what is changing? I am looking hard at the 700 and 900 models but am unsure since there is an 800 series coming out.

I've gotten in one catalog so far that shows the 898.
An Offshore Angler catalog of all things.
I did notice that it appears to have the higher power (8000 watts)
of the 900 and 1100 series
versus the 4000 of the 700 series. Not sure, but I am attributing watts output
to my take on why the 997 works so much better than my 797. Screen
size yes, but there just seems more to it, especially once the water gets
past 20' deep or so and the bottom is soft.
LOOKS like a smaller, 7" screen in the same size case as the 8" 900 series.
More "margin" around the screen,
but same pixel count (480x800) Seems like it listed for $1499 or so,
working from memory here.
Thanks. Can the higher end transducer be purchased and used on the 798 or is the 798 not able to process the 8000 watts? I have been trying to read up on the HB side/down scan stuff and I seem to get lost in all the "new" info out there. I figured the price would be up there because of a new model being rolled out.
I won't say for SURE on a 798, but I am using a transducer which would
have came with a 997/1197 on my 797 (and like it better)
Here are the 898 Specs
898cSI Combo
$1499.99 MRP
7” TFT LCD
480v x 800h
Temp included
GPS speed included
Side Imaging 455kHz / 800kHz - 180º DualBeam PLUS
200kHz / 20º 83kHz / 60º
500 Watts RMS
4000 Watts PTP
3 “soft-key” preset buttons
Dual SD card slot
50-channel external GPS
LakeMaster & Navionics compatible
Optional in-dash mounting
898 kinda look likes a 731 repackaged.
Shine, you need to talk to smitty. You wont like anything less than the 997. The larger screen makes a difference.
I can see where the side imaging would be better on the larger unit and 8k instead of 4k watts. But my main concern is the down imaging. Since it is not splitting the "view" the 798c might be ok especially if the 900/1100 series transducer will work with the 798c. I would only be using the SI for docks. I ain't got the patience to look at structure in SI, when I can use the DI and get a better "view" of what I am seeing under me.
Thanks for the replies and keep them coming...............
I priced a 798c/788c/interlink/navionics card/ram mount/& 2 yr extended warranties for almost the same price as the 800 series new unit......I am really counting pennies now to make it happen......just gotta pick up a few more cans!!!!!!!
The 898c Si is a smaller display version of the 998c Si (which replaces the 997c Si unit).
(CP we never made a 731. Did you mean the 931?)
Yes the 798 will work on the larger HDSi transducer that is used with the 997, 1197 and soon 898 and 998 units. However, it cannot make use of the higher 800kHz Si sonar that this transducer is capable of.
Read your literature closely as the 8,000 watts is only available when using the 1KW 50kHz (2D sonar only) transducer. So basically the 798 has the same wattage rating as the other units but does not have the option of using the 1KW 50kHz transducer. The 798 does have different circuitry than its larger cousins though and this along with the larger HDSi transducer is why there are differences seen between them – although the show the same data on a more basic level.
Yep, same size is right CP. Different display but same 7" diagonal size with totally different electronics inside.
Understand about the Mrs. Typin' ! LOL!
Well, I've worn out a h'bird catalog and several others -
hadn't picked up on the big power being only on the 50 freq.
(if I understood you correctly)
So you're saying the 997 and it's like are only putting out
4,000 on side imaging? good to know if thats the deal.
How do you get 4000 or 8000 watts our of 13 volts and a max of 3 amps.
I always thought that was a lot of energy. 100 40w light bulbs. Hmmmmm...
Dayton
I can make things real simple....get the BIGGEST screen your pocket book can afford....I've got a 997 and a 957 and wish I had 11 inch screens on both of them!!!!
I believe the transducer power is the measured vibration in water due to the oscillation or stimulation of the crystals (or other vibrating materials) in the transducer, not the electrical pressure.
Cane Pole is right (as usual). The power rating is a measure of the amount of sound energy and not a straight DC or AC wattage reading from the input power and current.
Also always be wary when comparing wattage as some will spec only peak-to-peak wattage ratings while others spec RMS wattage (P-P should be 8x the RMS wattage value).
So does this mean that the 898 is another piece of crap that HB will abandon like they did the 797 that so many of us bought? If so, I'm going to change over to lowrance.
I'd have said that I was die hard HB for the last 5 years, but having my wallet thrown under the bus to many times will change that, and quick.
Aw man, I got a 797 too, and ain't real happy with what all's went on,
and I'm watching Lowrance's progress too -
but 797 is still a pretty decent machine, and at least we can call H'bird
and talk to somebody, get a little affection with our reaming :D
Still not hearin much outta Lowrance's customer service.
That one poor woman that seemed to be the only one working there,
I heard on another site that they were forcing her to take her vacation
time off against her wishes even though her inbox is overflowing.
What I heard, anyway.
There are no enforceable standards governing what the manufacturers claim on the side of a box. It a lot of BS talking points to add confusion. Big numbers look good, but, in some cases can hinder the performance of a unit. you know, kinda like putting a sprint car on a go cart track.
db ( in some cases) is a logarithmic measurement with respect to a known reference. In acoustics , db is is usually in Pascals. I don't remember much of this chit.
Hereis the acoustic power wheel.
Sound pressure level, acoustics, particle velocity, acoustic impedance, sound intensity characteristic impedance dB SPL calculations ohm's law acousticequivalent pascal audio calculations sound units - sengpielaudio
I have no idea where anyone came up with that 8X value.:rolleyes:
New math???????
This is the way I lernt sound and it is still being taught this way. Must be Humminbird math.
I sure don't see any 8X in these basic formulas.

I agree with you Jwhite, the 797 does the job on a smaller scale, and will certainly show you what's under the water. It just seems like HB takes advantage a little bit. Bet that'll change some since they aren't the only guys on the block with SI.
Still waiting on the 8X answer????????????
8X? Still waiting.
Cane Pole,
I’m not sure what formula was used for this (it’s been many years since I went through electronics school) but it’s the same 8x relationship that other manufacturers use in their advertising as well.
I got it. The 8x factor. Now I am happy....:)
All this is why I'm glad I haven't bought a SI yet. Maybe by the time I have enough money to drop on one a lot of these issues will be worked out.
Math skulduggery and not a derived formula. It is coincidence, based on assumptions.
Seems that all use this 8X.
I bought the 998C-SI about 8 months before they came out with the New units. Did I wish I had waited on the new unit? No way I have had the pleasure to be able to find everything thats there.
Now for a unit there closing out but does not give people the choice of buying it or the newer unit. Now that does get to me. Places still list the Matrix 97 for sale at full price. And will not tell people there closed out. Now that I wish everyone would stop selling off these units at full price..
But on my SI unit. Been happy with the first GEneration unit from the start. Only wish it would hold up 10 more years. But looks like its going in for Service within the next few weeks.:o Shoot only got close to 5 years out of it.:D
