Ive got an old chest type freezer that doesnt work anymore and i was thinking about how to convert it to a minnow vat. Im looking for input or ideas on the best way to go about this. I will be using city water so what type of water filters do i need and how much aeration is necessary, also how often to change the water and filter out the amonia. Im clueless but interested.
what we used to do as a kid and had gold fish. We'd fill up a big vat full of tap water and let it sit for a few days, the clorine would evaporate by then and we could change the water out. I WAS gonna buy a 55 gallon drum and aerator form a certain member on this board and told him I wanted it but he ain't said another word about it. HINT HINT
I was told that fish produce ammonia then they breathe and that has got to be filtered out.
I put the one's I've had left the last 3 trips in my little pond out back and they're still alive. Guess I have about 100 or so now, maybe 125 at the most in a 4 foot by 2 foot plastic pond

Bigger, your minnows will last longer if you fill it with Perrier or Avion. ANy high end bottled water will do. Also the larger more discriminating crappie will bite those minners quicker.
If you spike it with a little moonshine, the minnows will attack the crappie
and choke them to death for you :p
Really, I kept some last winter in a old freezer here at the shop.
All I had was a little aquarium air pump hooked to about a 12"
bubble bar. That's it. As long as it stayed fairly cool, I'd only lose two
or three a day usually. The poo did get pretty bad by Springtime so this
year I rigged up a filter that is working pretty good though it's a throw-
together. I got a 110 to 12V converter running a 360 gph livewell pump,
shooting it over into the top of a five gallon bucket hung in the side of
the tank with a central unit air filter squashed down into the bucket.
Took a hole saw and cut holes in the sides of the bucket up near the top,
water passes through the filter then overflows out through these holes.
Don't have to run it all the time, just an hour or so every few days.
DD, we talked on the phone and I guess we never had a meeting of the minds. You said you wanted it, much like 13 other peeps but never pulled the trigger.

it's all good doc. doc, on the horse head jigs you make, do yall use sickle hooks? also, do you use a split ring or a butt ring to hold the spinner on the swivell?

Bigger on the Main Board you ask Darryl where to get the stuff to remove chlorine, you should be able to get it at wally world in the pet dept.
Rick, that's a great set up, I'm in the process of puttin together one of those, thanks for the info. If I was close I'd a bought yours, not hittin on ya Double D, just sayin. Bigger it might take 2 of those pump set ups for freezer that big. Ain't it like twice as big as a 55 gal drum ? The good thing is it's insulated. Probably have to do some sealing work on it?
Yea outlaw its bout twice the size but i prolly aint gonna fill it all the way up, mabey 60 or 70 gallons. Its insulated pretty good and i think itl hold water like it is but im gonna fill it up and check .
This will be real handy if i can make it work.
I kinda looked round at walley world yeaterday and didnt see anything that jumped right out and sait water treament fer chlorine but ther did have a charcoal filter system for 60 gal aquariun for bout 40 bucks, i cant decide the best rout to take.Quote:

Bigger a 300 GPH pump will turn 75 gallons of water over every 15 minutes. A 60 gal aquarium pump won't keep hundreds of minners alive.
I've got some in my shop so when I get home I will see the correct name for it. I used it in a small freezer to keep minnows in. I did not have a filter but had a 110 volt aerator in it. My freezer stilled worked so I had a timer on it so it would run about 30 minutes 2 times a day. That keep the water about 50 degrees. Minnows lasted a long time. I would dip out 5 gallons of water then treat 5 gallons of city water then pour it in. I have got a slip at the lake now so I just keep them in a 15 gallon plastic drum made into a live box.

Hey Bigger look in the pet supply section at Wally World. Where they have the fish tank suppies. Its call Start Right water treatment.It remove Chlorine instantly,works great i used it in my 100 gal tank. Hope this helps. also dont feed them minners much its there poooo that cuases ammonia to build so frequent water chages are a must but only chage 1/2 the tank when you do it.

I got a 170gph sub pump, a 110v bubbler, 2 one foot stones, and 25' if line and got out of there fer less than 40 bucks. If it worls itl be on the cheap for sure.
bigger, you can also drop in a couple Extenze tablets to dissolve in the water...........i heard it makes the minners grow at a much faster rate...

I REALLY like the idea bout the working freezer on a timer to keep the water cool....thats the bomb!!
Big ,don't know if you want to go this far but you could elavate the tank a little on blocks and put in a sump drain and hose in the bottom to drain off the poo ( no offense WB) and dead water on the bottom.
Thats a good idea too outlaw!!! may give that some thought. Its sittin on a pallet now but ive got some blocks too.

Seems to come from really good stock. I understand his dad has done some good things for the Jackson Mississippi area. It appears that Junior's honor left him at some point.
If I bought anything from him I would demand a face to face exchange.
He seems to have a lot of communication issues regarding money.
I purchased a guided crappie trip from him for me and my dad for $150.00.
He will not fish the trip and he will not refund the money. He says there was some communication issue.
I have watched on this and other forums, where others question his actions.
It seems to always be a communication problem for him regarding dates and money and such.
I have contacted him by phone and contacted him by email and United States postal mail and by private message on this forum. He ignores all attempts at contact. He will not respond and when finally contact is made, he becomes irate and tirades into a tantrum.
Stay away from any deals with him and you will not be separated from your money for nothing.
He took me for $150.00, but he never will again.
He gives crappie fisherman a bad name in my book.

You're the only dude on here that I have ever had any business dealings with or in the history of me doing any guiding that "got taken" as you claim (actually in all the guided trips I ever had, from all sources, I only had to take 2 deposits, you and one other) You messed it all up not me. You booked date after date only to pull the plug, sometimes just DAYS before the trip date. As I told you there wouldn't be an opportunity for a 3rd loss. You got fired as a client, accept it and move on. I lost 2 potential trips because of you and one would think since you have some much class you would have enough sense to tell me to just keep the money (THE DEPOSIT DUHHHHH) for my troubles. Make sure you tell them the YEAR you started all this and streched it out into 2-3 years booking different dates. I think you will find that the replys you seek won't be what you want. I have sold MANY products of ALL shapes and sizes on here and taken MANY trips off the crappie site all with positive results.
As for bringing my family into this...Well it speaks for itself. I think people can deduce from your post who really has character issues.

I fish with people that know me. I have an excellent reputation and have no issues with anyone but you.
I didn't attempt to or take you for anything. I didn't cost you a trip. I didn't set a bunch of dates and then cancel them. I postponed one trip with your agreement by telephone contact with the understanding that I could reschedule it in the Spring.
This is my last contact regarding this issue.
It appears based on your situation that you need the money bad enough that you will not do the honorable thing.
So maybe you really need the money.
I wish the best for you, but I will not hide the fact that you have stolen from me.

what are you talking about? I have never had issues about money with anyone on here. You can try and make me look bad about money buddy but it's about more thank that. I have answered everyone of your messages over the years and last time I wouldn't book you. Zero it was about principal YEARS ago when you called off the 2nd booking in the spring when I KNOW I had turned down plenty of clients. I love it how NONE of this is your responsibility. You tried to book a 3rd date a year ago and I wouldn't let you. You got fired as I said before. I know you think that's not supposed to happen but sometimes it does. What a dummy. In one post you claim i won't talk to you but then you say in the above post that we talked on the phone when you cancled one time...Also, How could I "get irate and have a trantrum" as you claim but then you say I won't talk to you...Get your story straight. Sounds like we have had multiple contacts, mostly with you with some sad excuse calling off another trip.

Didn't know all this was gonna stir up a Poo Storm. Ricks always tried to help me out and HAS put me on some fish. We had a miscommuncation on picking up a minner drum and aerator but that's it. I'll still take it BTW Rick if it's still for sale and CAN pick it up this weekend, you have my phone number so it's on you to call if you still have it and want to sell it. You call, I'll come pick it up.
