Hi, i squirrel hunt in the winter and i harvest several squirrel's. I'm just wondering if there is any demand for squirrel tails in here. These are mostly Southern Illinois grey squirrel's ..some red fox squirrel's.
Question 1..How much are they worth
Question 2..Would you want to purchase some and how many.
All these tails will be split and have 20 Mule Team Borax rubbed on the raw hide. Thanks
I am always looking for squirrel and kip tails. As for a price, retail they only go for $2-3 each. I would pay $1.50-2 for them if they are good full ones, maybe $1 otherwise.
I wish I could hunt them here but alas it is not legal here.
BTW, most don't split them, they are just dried on the bone.
I do too though its me and three other buddies on the killing spree so lots to go around consisting of the eastern Grey squirrels"Bucks only"and the infamous,and endangered "Delmarva Fox" squirrels when possible. when a neat road kill presents its self".These puppies run anywhere from 14" to 22"long in the tail,as round as a baseball in radius, and are nearly all white"in color.Also a black,and genetic whites are possible on occasion.Just need to ask.What doesn't go to Mepps for trade of combo Killers,I would be willing to sell/barter/swap.

grubfarmer67 would you like to get rid of some white tails. We do have a lot of squirrels one problem most of them our in the city. but they are definitely beautiful looking squirrels most of them are red we do have gray squirrels but they are on the coast or west to Oregon.
I will definately want to get some from both of you depending on the price. Pictures would be nice but the description sounds good to me. PM's on their way.

I have a lot of colors I bought wholesale and hardly use them as it is so can't help much and if I want natural (which I have) I just shoot some, LOL! They cost about $1.25 wholesale.
Fox Tails are a lot bigger and can buy them for not much over $10 or $12 and I have probably 7-8 colors of them too, but again don't use them a lot either. I guess though to be totally honest I probably tie 98% feather tails on jigs. Every once in a while I have orders for hair jigs.
Now if you get some Raccoon tails I would have some interest as I have tied some of them for a guy and I kind of liked them my self. So I would take a few Raccoon tails if you get any. Oh and bone out on these with tanned hide is what I have now.

I've never used Squirrel tail but I'm always up for tryin something new....so keep me in mind also, when you have some extras.

Skip, the squirrel tails are boned and tanned? Have never seen them that way but then again, never looked.
I need to start getting coon tails from roadkill around here. Should have 50 of them in the past month.
Thats what I do"If I see a coon,squirrel,fox,etc...I just pull over"depending on the kill,and smell,i generally take what I want from it which is always the tail.I had plenty of coon tails last yr,JJJ got all those from me.I can put more coon tails together.AW" Your more than welcome to a half doz.or so."Fish 4 all has a half doz.or so coming in big grays,and maybe a genetic blk,or wht.if one shows up soon...

That one should be sacred. Teach him to bring in his buddies so hunting is easier.;) Sorry, had to say it but I would have a hard time cutting that ones tail off.
I am gonna have to start getting coon tails off roadkill. I swear there are hundreds of them around here every winter and I see a good 50+ so I could have more than enough to share. Just have to check and make sure it is legal first. Some laws here are a little anal when it comes to stuff like this.
Yep, I've had him since he was a couple days old. About 2 years ago he fell out of a pecan tree in my yard on a cold 30 degree day. He had no hair and his eyes were closed. Brought him in our 12x12 sun room and hes been there ever since. Original intent was to release back once he could fend for himself, but he didnt like that idea. He's just like a dog trying to tear the door down to get back in the house! His favorite thing to do is steal our dryer sheets and put them in his nest so he is hands down the best smelling squirrel out there!

I had some interest in natural black tails. I posted on our state hunting forum and ask for some black tails. One fella send me a variety of 3 dozen, in exchange for 3 dozen jigs. It worked out great for both of us.
for you guys that use real bucktails, do ya'll split them and take the bone out?
tree rats leave the bone in just salt heavy on the cut end and let dry for 2 weeks in a window seal of your shop
next step is the deal tho if you want to leave the tail as is boil it in salt water for about 5 min dry it with a towle and comb it out let dry for a week and its done
if your wantin to add color bring water to just under a boild add 2 oz white vinger 2 packs of koolaid and put tail in till it gets the color you want rince with cold water dry and comb it let dry a week and your done
if done right will neaver smell i do about 20 a year
oh and dear yes take bone out and skip next racoon i see geting in trash cans ill send ya a tail
Yes, split bucktails. Easier to use and much better drying process.
gabulldog, do you salt the end first, then boil it in salt water and let it dry? And can you do this with coon tails or is it better to split them and salt and borax them.
Not the squirrel tails, but the coon tail is bone out and tanned hide. The squirrel tails I have some bought and some I got and just dried them in my garage with regular methods with salt and borax.They were a surprise for me when my customer ask for them and said that is all he uses. They look different than any hair I ever used and are strange looking some what, but the more I looked at them the more I liked them. Little wiry hair and then a puff type stuff as you get closer to the hook and look nothing like I thought they would.Quote:

I feel the coon is worth you guys taking a look at and trying them. If these had been for me I probably would have put some silver holo flash (one strip down each side).

Hi, i don't want this thread to end, but i want to respond to the interest in those tails. First off i have never sold any squirrel tails, but i have sold a bunch of coon hides. My reason for asking is ,it seem's a shame to throw them away if somebody can use them. Last year i got 135 of them and quit, no sense in getting them all. I don't know how well i will do this year, we had a mother of a storm here in May. It's very hard to even walk through the woods for the down tree's. Lucky for the squirrels. Our season ends here in Feburary, so i'll save the tails and get back with you guys then. It seems like you'all don't want the tails split so i'll just dip the ends in Borax and let them dry. Please don't stop this thread, i'm learning a lot from you guy's. TKS.
I wish I was around your neck of the woods. Squirrel is pretty good especially in a stew or soup, had it when I was in Texas in the Army and had squirrel patties in Germany.
yea you salt the end heavy and let dry for 2 weeks then do the boil and let dry again for a week
I guess I just need to keep from getting caught because it is illegal here. Either that or buy them from y'all so I don't get a ticket costing me more than all the tails I would ever use.
I drive truck for a livin and drove by 2 'yote and a gray fox or 2 this last trip. Gonna carry a pair of cutters this next trip, they're prime this time of year.
I traded someone here for a little coyote hide and I have not used it to tie yet, but like it's looks a good bit. I should have tied some with it, but just been too busy with other stuff tying.Quote:

Why do you make friends with the local game warden and see if they will cut some off to give you? I would probably just take the risk and cut the tail off and bring it come for the salt and borax, but again that is just me.Quote:

This is a small town with lots of good old boys living in the woods and such and any of the people that grew up here have a different in.

Maybe I can find out who is part of the road crew clean up for road kill and get them that way, legally anyway.
