Something New......

Been doing alot of fly fishing for SMB & LMB so I have been finding some new flies to play with. I started to think if I could use this with spinning tackle. Top one is my fly (my edited version of Arkansas Bucktail) and others are attempts at putting it on a jig head....

Middle left is on a 1/8oz. & other 2 are 1/64oz. on long hooks. It is supposed to mimic a shad from the profile... has a tall body, but is thin with the bucktail only coming out top and bottom. This would also match a baby bluegill... :cool: I am getting in some new supplies this week and want to put this together with black/gray buck tail to match the shad color better. May even work on fall walleye as the shad school up and die off? Will see...

Those Arkansas Bucktail jigs look good, Attica. I've caught caught a bunch of bass on the fly pattern

Tight jigs - your new stuff - is outstanding

Not sure I would try that same pattern using some Fox hair as it should have a bit more action, but it looks good as is too!

I have a lot of both buck tails and fox tails and I have got to think this could be tied using either and the fox is not a stiff and will not flair as bad.

I am not a big hair fisherman so maybe someone else can say what they think about tying this using fox, but I think that is what I would try. Also not sure I wouldn't try using a tungsten cone head and a fly hook, maybe still be able to use it on a spinning rod?

OKJiggy, I missed a huge large mouth on that fly about 2 weeks ago. :( Didn't have the bead chain eyes and was stripping it fast near the top of the water. It blew up on it and I pulled it right out of his mouth. :o

Skip, never have tried fox hair so don't really know the action or colors available. All I know is bucktails, between clousers and jigs have caught me ALOT of river smallies. I like the idea of the cone head on the fly, that might get me down in the current better with my FR. I know, I know... this is crappie.com, sorry........

Those are bass getters for sure. Round out your hair colors to include olive, brown, and orange for the brown bass. I like your application of a fly pattern to a casting jig. :cool:

Thanks! They all are made with just thread bodies. The bottom right jig was done with a 2-strand metallic silver embroidery thread. I have a HUGE spool that I got from my work, can send you a small spool of it if you want. Not the strongest stuff but is very shiny.

Attica you can get fox in most colors if you want. I have about 6 colors, but most are the bright colors like Chart, Fl Yellow, FL Blue, FL Orange etc.

They do come in Dark brown, Black, Tan, several different blue's, Olive in several tones.

I just fine it (fox) easier to work with than Buck tails.

Hey Attica, Those are some great looking jigs. I like the colors. I have been tieing jigs for many years and cant tie flies to well some to small but can tie up some mean jigs. I have been tieing up fly patterns on jigheads for a long time and have caught some dandy fish.

There are lots of fly fishermen here that have always said "not unless its on a fly" but i tied them up some different jigs that look like there flies and they love to use them on a heavier fly rod for trout and bass now. The jig head sinks differently and faster than lots of their flies. I have tied up quite a few clouser minnows for a friend of mine over the years for smallmouth bass and trout and he loves them. They are the same materials and size hooks but are on a jig head. Great jigs keep up the good work. Thats what I love about making jigs and other tackle is the options are endless and fun to create that new jig that catches fish perch

Do you have any picts (or can you get any) of your clouser jigs? I'd love to see them! Clouser is my top pick fly for smallies, would be awsome to throw them into my spinning tackle supplies, and the biggest barbell eyes just don't cut it for casting with spinning tackle. :( What size head are you using?? Would bet they should work well for crappie also. :cool: AF

speaking of fly patterns tied on lead heads, I got the idea for my jig in flatfish's swap from the Lefty's Deceiver baitfish pattern. The possibilities are endless...

Not this isn't the exact pattern, as the hackle is too short, but I've caught a few on it so far:

Nice looking jig, think I get you on how the hackle would "swim" at the end of the bucktail. Man, don't do this to me...... I tied up 2 prototypes for the #11 swap, picked one I liked and now you got me thinking something TOTALY different. Arrrrrrrhh!

Hey AtticaFish - will check around for the thread.
After seeing your fly i had to tie a couple, i used craft hair, and some pearl braid i had, to me they look good, but will have to see what the local crappie think.

Hey Attica I dont have any pictures of them right now but will try to tie some more up and show you. they are just tied up with chart/ white or black/white buck tail hair and some small 1/16 or sometimes some 1/32oz heads and they also work great though the ice to.

Buckeye Mike, the craft hair would probably make life easier. I spend way too much time trying to get the bucktail to go where I want it and stay put! I'm trying to make up a couple on a 3/8oz. with a gamakutsu 2/0 hook for the erie walleye from the docks coming up.
