In-Line spinners?

Just started to fish for 'gills and sunfish again and really have enjoyed getting back to the roots of what sparked my fishing passion. I have fared well this year fishing nightcrawlers and mealworms and a few artificials mainly jig head/spinner bait arm lures with a grub of some sort on it. (Beetle Spins basically, just self made w/painted jig heads and safety pin spinner blades with crappie beavers, curl tail, triple tail, tube, squirt, minnow, paddle tail etc. bodied grubs)

I used to do well in creeks with Panther Martin and Mepp's in-line spinners. (Small 0 or 00 size Aglias and Black Furies and the small PMs) These things are costly compared to above mentioned lures and wonder if anyone does well with these? Does anyone EVER seem to catch more sunfish/'gills on any artificial compared to your favorite natural bait? And if you do catch more on an artificial please let me know what you prefer to toss @ these fish.

I have never used them for gills. I think the smaller ones would work well in shallow water. As you noted, they are relatively expensive compared to other artificials. That's a big reason I don't fish with them.

I just recently went through my fishing records for 2006-2009. In that period, float fishing with live maggots topped everything. No other bait or artificial was even remotely close.

For artificials, a black 1/64 oz marabou jig was #1. A distant second was the Beetle spin. Various flies came in third.

I don't worry about the cost of in-line spinners. I make my own, although it's tough sometimes tying hair and feathers on the trebles.

If you make your own, you could use a single hook. I cut off two of the trebles on all my Mepps and Blue Fox spinners. They work just as well.

Ain't no way I have the patience to make these lures! And I suspect we all agree that natural baits will generally outfish ANY artificial. I just prefer to fool them with the lure as to catching them with bait... just the basser in me I guess?

NEVER tried or even seen maggots for sale as bait. Needless to say Grubco is about to get an order from mrbasser!

I understand. There are definitely some days when I prefer to toss artificials. You should try the small jigs. Bass Pro sells them (in their fly shop) and several guys on here sell them. They will catch anything.

I'm not surprised. :( In the US, they're mostly used for ice fishing, but they work anywhere. I learned about maggots from an Englishman. They're the #1 bait in Europe. In England, you can walk into any tackle shop and buy a gallon of maggots for about what you'd pay for a couple of tubes of crickets here.

LOL, just started seeing crickets this year in MO. In my opinion they are so easy to lose/ too mushy compared to worms I don't see the point? ALL my Southern buds swear crickets are the ONLY bream bait to use.

I really read over every post that interested me on this site and really appreciate the Grubco find as I LOVE mealworms for their lack of mess. I plan to order some bait in the spring from them.

in-line spinners aren't nearly as good as artificial grubs. but i do however catch a 'gill or two with a chartreuse rooster tail when the going gets tough. i will catch around 8 fish on a plastic grub on a jig head to every 1 fish i catch with a spinner. but they still work. and when the "mojo" of my grub fades away i can tie on a rooster tail and catch at least a fish or two :D

bottom line is that grubs are the best, but always keep a spinner for when the going gets tough.

Ok, I know I'm a newbie and this thread is kind of old... but I just had to chime in!

I've caught more fish on a Roostertail than just about anything!

With the right color pattern, I would put a severe whippin' on your jig and grub!!!;)

I only use chartreuse for very muddy water, the white coachdog pattern will haul them in in clearish water, the yellow coachdog will get'em real good in stained water, the green coachdog will catch them when the white and yellow isn't working... the golden hopper pattern will kill them anytime... if you can find it!

I mainly use the 1/16th and 1/8th oz. sizes.

Boy that got me to thinking, the first one I ever used C P Swing C.P. Swing The Swinger sure did catch a lot of all kind of fish on them. Have not used them in a long long time.

I use a little Hildebrant fliker with a Uncle Josh Fly Strip and a light weight flyrod
flip it near cover... let it flutter down a bit and strips back a little line at a time to you.

I've caught lots of gills on artificial baits, but live bait is IMO the best.
Night crawlers and waxies seen to work best for me.

Only thing was ... white/blk dot version was primarily used for White Bass, while the yellow/blk dot version always seemed to only interest Black Bass :confused:
I never really used them for Crappie or 'gills ... as Crickets, earthworms, nightcrawlers, and "Horseweed worms" (stalk borer grubs) were our usual choices for the 'gills, and minnows/shad for the Crappie. Beyond the Shyster, I did get taught that Crappie could be caught on a "Doll Fly", though ;)
(yeah, I know .. that dates me too :eek: :D .... as I was introduced to these lures in the late 50's - early 60's )

Best small lake and pond bait for me has been a 1/16or 1/8 oz Vibric Roostertail, brown body with a gold blade. I think you could clean out a pond with one of these, bluegill, bass, channel cats, crappie if present, even caught a few golden shinners on one. They are hard to find and if you do find them I like to remove that stupid shinney sticker on the blade this allows the blade to spin easyier.

Heck CP!... I'm just 23... (at heart ;) ) I got that ol' black and yellow Shyster in one of those little 110 piece tackle boxesfor my 10th or 11th birthday back in the mid 60's and it was the first artificial lure I ever caught anything on. Like you said, it was too big for Bream to bite but I had caught a couple little Largemouth with it and was tickled to death the first time I tied it on. Then a little while after that I hooked something BIG!... it was HUGE!!! It had the drag screaming on my little Zebco 202 I was yelling for my brothers to come help me and some other folks that were fishing came over to see what was going on, after what seemed like an eternity I finally got it in... a 24" 5 poundish Channel Cat!!! I was so excited that I ran all the way home with it to show my Mom :D . I skinned and cleaned it and we ate fried Catfish for 2 nights in a row! It was the biggest fish I had ever caught and was what started my love for inline spinners.

My poor little Zebco 202 was never the same after that.

Now I use the 1/16 and 1/8 oz. Roostertails on ultra lite spinning tackle for the Sunfish... and Bass... and Stripers.. and whatever else will bite them!

Landed this landlocked Striper on a 1/8 oz. white coachdog Roostertail and UL tackle... couldn't believe I got him in!

I'm not a big fan of those little mylar stickers either, they do impede the rotation of the blade... a painted blade doesn't spin as well as a bare blade either on a Roostertail... another example of over improving!

Drawback

It was hard for me to keep the hook set with the
in-line spinners. Bass over 2# would jump and be gone.
In brush they hang very easy. Once a bigger fish had
been on, the shaft would be bent, from the fight. You
could re-bend it but it would never run the same. It is
a productive bait but frustrating to use.

For all types of sunfish in the spring and summer if 1/16th oz. wordens white rooster tails dont catch catch em then i'll use crickets and mealworms under a float.

The only time I had problems with bent wires was when I first started fishing them and bought the cheap ones. Now that I make my own I make sure to use .028 to .030 wire it's a bit stiffer and I really prefer the folded clevis's to the stirrups. They just seem to spin better, I save the stirrup clevis's for spinnerbaits.

Hi .. had to add to this .. just got around to it.

Attached photos ... I made the ones in the pic of 2.. top one I made back in about 1961 and had it on the market for a couple of years (the one in photo was made in 62 note the legs are off of the spider) first ones were with a brass body .. had a hard time getting them and went to the lead body .. all with "French Type" Blade ... The 2nd picture is of the "Thing" they came out with it the same year that I came out with the BrimKiller 100 .. they used some good advertising and had distribution (I later worked for them for about 13 years as a salesman) When the went out of businessm (1988) I bought all of the spiders (crickets) and make the bottom one in the 1st picture.

Have caught a lot of "Brim" on them.

steve, i still use them from time to time. still have a bunch and still buy them once in a while. size 0 and 1 have been deadly on gills from time to time. i used the bigger sizes for walleye, smalllmouth and largemouth, tipped with pork rind strips or crawlers. (long time gone:-( )

i mostly use berkley powerbaits,and other brand plastic artificials.sometimes i throw small crankbaits but its mostly plastics i use.i don't use live baits anymore.i catch stuff on artificials and i am happy with that.one time i out fished somebody using live bait.they were fishing live worms under a float,i was throwing a tiny lunker city fins shad on a hook with no weight.i was pulling crappie out left n right.the kid using the worms didn't get anything!he was throwing his float right next to where i was fishing.i rarely throw any kind of spinners,maybe i should try em sometime.
