Clouser Jig??

Wanted to make up my own flies that looked as close as possible to tube jigs and go after some small mouth. Added some split shot to #1 & #2 aberdeen wire hooks and mashed away and came up with these.

Tried to cast them with my fly rod... it doesn't have the backbone to throw them without the lure hitting me in the back of my head. OUCH! 2 smacks were enough. So I settled for my ultra light and found them to be killer on smallies. These are untried on crappie, but think they should work as a swimming jig. The hook with 2 splits is about 1/16 oz and single shot around 1/32.

Anyone try this before or any thoughts?

I made some clouser dumbell eyes by using two split shot on a piece of small gauge wire and then powder painted the whole thing and it worked out pretty well and was alot cheaper than storebought....like the looks of your jig.... hope you do well on it..brim

That is really one sweet looking jig it would probably put a hurting on the smallies on my area as well... just might have to give that one a try .... again that is one sweet looking jig

I've been tying fat-bodied chenille jigs for quite a while. These are designed to function like plastic tube baits. Here are a few of my ties.

These can be pretty good for larger bass when fished properly.

Pup... What are you running under your chenille to make the body so fat? Just doubling up the chenille? Those do look good!

I still would like a way to figure a lighter weight idea to throw with my fly rod. Figured doubling the chenille would add lotsa weight once it gets wet, but not sure. May have to post this question on FAOL to get the fly to work how I want it. These jigs work good on the smallies tho!!!

I overwrap the chenille layers very tightly. I think you are quite right about the concern over water weight added by doubling up on the chenille body. Would make the fly heavier and impact fly casting.

I once considered tying on commercially-made floating jig heads. Their small hook sizes nixed that idea quickly for me.

You might try wrapping your chenille over a secured strip (or strips) of closed cell foam. Try the type used to tie Chernobyl Ants. Slight weight can be added to the hook by using craft wire to overcome the added buoyancy if necessary.

Could I get some measurements on all of those so I have a place to start for my idea please. all of them look good, don't know if I could throw them on a fly rod for long but never know. I have some pretty heavy stuff I throw anyway.

I will get some new pictures with a ruler next to the hooks. I believe the split shots are #3, but have no idea on weight, was just guessing compared to jigs I know the weight on.


Grubfarmer - OKSTATE.... Thought about placing in the jig picts, but wasn't sure if these could even be considered "jigs." :confused: They are also untested on crappie. Assume they should work, but will just wait till I wear some out before I post on there. ;)

Pup, thanks for the info, will have to try just doubling the chenille and see if that works, if not, will try the foam or even some balsal wood.

My jigs were designed for largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Didn't really consider them for crappie. Each was tied on a 1/4-ounce head with a size 1/0 hook. I jumped into this thread because of AF's mention of chenille and smallmouth bass. I do appreciate your compliment and suggestion though. :cool:

The grid is 1" squares. Hooks are plain aberdeen, the ones with 2 weights are #1 and the single weight is #2. The bag of split shot was marked 3/0. 2 of them don't ever come out the same, I just squeeze em till they look close enough then smooth them up a little. Hope this helps, interested to see what you are doing F4A.

That helps a lot, gives me something to go on for the size of my body parts I am gonna try to make. Thank you, I appreciate it.

Haven't decided if I will make them tapered right away or just make "tubes" that can be shaped later on. One is obviously easier but with the material I am gonna work with it is easier to do it before they are finished. Will just have to see how long it takes when I get some started.
