I am in need of a new vise, have a pretty cheapy one now so anything is an upgrade. Been looking at the Griffin Odyssey Spider. Anyone on here use one or know it? Would it work ok for both jigs and flies? Cost around $80, wanted to stay under $100, but the next level of rotary is a big jump in price.... what's different about the Spider?
No rotary now so didn't know if I should just stick with a straight simple vise and save my money.... for other materials. :D:D:D
Yes it is a jump to the next level, but it depends on what you are looking at and what you want. First I would say do you want a vise that will last probably a life time and maybe never need another or would you prefer just getting one for now and in a couple of years jump up again? I would also tell you that if it was me I would look very hard at the Peak as it is know from what I read a fine vise and great machine work on them for about $140. Look hard you may beat that, I just don't know that for sure. Also in that range is the Renzetti Traveler which I have it's big brother the Saltwater version with cam jaw. Love it, but I don't tie as much on it as I do my other vise. It's too much so will not talk about it.
Anyway just thought I would give you something to toss around and go to the tying board at FAOL.

I own a Griffin Superior 3ARP vise. Great jaws. Griffin has a good reputation for hook holding. My vise has 360 degree rotation, so I'm satisfied with it. It's not a true rotary vise.

I just received my Danvise last week and I have put about 50 or 60 jigs through it already (everything from 1/80 oz to 3/8 oz football heads) and I have to say I am impressed. I got mine off of eBay for $75 shipped from this seller. Seeing as I have pretty large hands and tying jigs you usually have a bit of a "tail" I would suggest getting the extension arm as well.
The only functional thing I have read negative is the fact that some people that are too lazy to adjust the jaws have had issues with it breaking on them. Taking a simple 3 or 4 seconds to adjust between hook sizes really isn't a big deal if you want to make a tool last for a long time. I personally think the cam on the jaws is awesome. If you do go with it just watch the dvd that comes with it and it shows you how to adjust the jaws the correct way.
If you're using a lot of chenille or hackle you can't beat having a true rotary it's a major time saver and hassle saver as well, I love my Danvise so far.

Ended up jumping up a bit to the Odyssey Cam vise from Griffin. Got a great deal from Laserdoc on it, just couldn't turn it down!!! He is working right now to put them up on his site, but if you send him an email he can give you all his pricing.
Can't wait to get it in hand..... painting some jigs so I am ready!!!! :D:D:D

Nice vise. Looks like a good one.
I'm thinking about getting (or making) a rotator handle for my 3ARP. It might make level winding my jig body materials somewhat easier.
